Differences between phytoplankton and Sea Monkey food

I have always fed live phytoplankton since my first colony was still tiny so I’m really noticing the differences. I recently got a shipment that might be bad and my water quality went down so one of the things I’m trying is not feeding it to them anymore. So for the last two weeks or so I’ve just been stirring up the water a little so they can get the algae easier. They’ve had glorious poop trails so I’m assuming they’re getting enough to eat. Yesterday I finally gave them a half scoop of sea monkey food.

But anyway I’ve noticed they’ve definitely changed color. They were very orange or red and now they’re more brown. Also they used to swim all around the tank most of the day and now they’re always at the bottom or sides eating algae. I hope this is all ok.

Any other differences y’all have noticed?

Rise of the Ghostly Galleon

When I was just 7 years old I received my first set of Sea-Monkeys. The Ghostly Galleon held my first pets for well over a half decade and I recently stumbled upon my old tank in a box of childhood belongings. It was so much smaller than I remembered. I was just that much bigger. I knew that I wanted that feeling again.

Behold the adult Ghostly Galleon. 10x the original with built in bubbler and lights. I tried to remain faithful to the tank as I remembered it. Jagged rocks, a glow in the dark ship teetering on a cliff, and a spectral light calling the Sea-Monkeys to spiral above the wreck like the phantoms of the lost crew.

This project took about 2 weeks to complete and now houses a happily growing colony with enough food packets to last another decade. If anyone is interested you can find a full build log and all the files used here! https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7423808

Tank Upgrade

Hi all! I hatched my first sea monkeys almost 2 weeks ago and they’re looking good! I have around 30-40 survivors in a standard volcano 355 mL tank. I’m thinking about next steps as they grow, and thinking a bigger tank may be better.

The issue is that I live in a very small flat without much space, so was thinking of limiting it to 1 L (maybe up to 2 if I push). This is quite hard to find proper tanks of this size, so wondered if anyone had any ideas of what I could use instead?

What can I do?

I transferred them 4 days ago and lost an smaller adult. It messed me up because I feel at fault. Tiny babies didn’t survive, I have 5 pregnant females so there’s hope. The rest of the adults are thriving, swimming and doing sea monkey things.

Their og tank felt so cramped and this one feels too big. What can I add? Safely of course, it’s hard to tell but I have about 20 adults

Day 10 since I started this Aqua Dragon tank and it seems to be going well so far. They're definitely eating well!

This is my first tank since I was a kid and I'm already in love with the little critters ❤️ It's almost hypnotic watching them zip around.

The bad news: out of the initial hatch, only two have reached maturity. One male, and one female.

The Good News: They’re mating! I am very happy with this, as it confirms the conditions in the tank are good. Despite the die-off, which I’m disappointed took so many.

So, there will be a second generation and I should soon have grand-shrimps! Oh also, if you’re curious about the red color. I recently fed them some astaxanthin powder.

While in an aquatic shop after accessories for my shrimpies, i was very moved and upset by the sad fate of brine shrimp packed in tiny plastic bags sold as food. Couldn’t not try to give some a safe future.

Better to not have animals who eat others so funds the intense unkind breeding of other lives to be killed or fed alive be this shrimps, mice or locusts.
Compassion for all animals by our choices changes lives. Supply and demand.

Am I right in thinking these two are mating ?

They’re stuck together , hoping to add to my son’s colony of sea monkeys . This was our 3rd attempt . I gave up with the smaller tanks and got this they seem to be thriving .

let's talk tank decor

i've been quite frankly driving myself up the wall trying to research any somewhat natural looking decor that can go into a custom brine shrimp tank and i'm looking to see if other people have opinions/advice on this

here's the problem: most marine graded decor falls under rocks, and literally all of them are porous. this is completely fine for a typical reef setup and actively desired since it helps with beneficial bacteria, but we dont want this for the shrimp since they'll very likely get trapped inside and die. freshwater graded decor is more diverse but is a lot more risky because saltwater is a more hostile environment, and things that are generally inert enough in freshwater might cause problems in saltwater given enough time.

what about macroalgae? the one i see coming up the most is chaeto - i personally really dont think putting chaeto into a brine shrimp tank is a good idea. the dense carpet looks like the perfect environment for shrimp to get tangled in, as much as i would love to have a ball of it in my tank. plus there's plenty of stories of people getting hitchhikers on bought algae, which might be fine for a reef tank but again... we're talking about brine shrimp. some of them like copapods might even be predatory to the shrimp.

this leaves decor that looks like small statues or creatures, which is fine... but not my taste. not to mention a huge portion of them are too big for a nanotank.

if anyone has any suggestions to make my new tank not have just a thin layer of sand on the bottom and nothing else i'd appreciate it, because ive been at this for weeks now and haven't found any good ideas

New 0.7 gal tank!

Post image
9 Upvotes

Ive set up a 0.7 Gal tank, and Im very excited!

I’ve set up aeration and my room’s temp is already good for brine shrimp. I haven’t transferred my current colony over yet, but I have seeded it with some tank gunk.

The substrate is only very fine sand, which should be perfectly safe according to my research. I did buy a decoration for the tank, but that decoration hasn’t arrived in the mail yet.

Even though It’s not strictly needed for brine shrimp, I am going to let this tank cycle for a few weeks.

Ways to get Algae?

Hello sea monkeys enjoyers! I don't post much so apologies if there's something formatted wrong here.

I have had my colony for over a year now and they're doing great! But I've really been wanting some Algae to grow in their environment and it hasn't yet. The jar has been sat in indirect sunlight right near my skylight which has been cracked open all summer (only just started closing it as the weather has dropped now in the uk) and still no Algae! I am in an attic room high up so I think perhaps that's the reason I haven't had any particles drift in? If anyone has any advice for growing Algae that would be great, or alternatively I would consider buying some ( if that's possible ?) in which case I would love some reccomendations!

Does my Nannochloropsis algae culture look like it's crashing?

I've been growing and harvesting Nannochloropsis for months now without issue, but I noticed my culture is starting to have little bits floating around inside it. I filtered it out recently to remove all the big chunks and it was like water yesterday, but now it has little algae bits floating around inside again.

Been trying to get clear video of these guys and this is my best so far! 4k 60fps. That’s what chat GPT said was best. I think the daylight helped a bunch too.

I’m thinking of trying one of those clip on lenses for my phone. Anyone tried those?

Once shared my journey of failing tank 2 times and this is the third time and my sea monkeys finally doing great.

Today is the 7th day. I just added the air pump today as they are bigger now.

Only 2 difference from 2 previous fails that I do different this time:

  1. Manual aeration this time until i can see the sea monkeys properly easily without using a torchlight.
  2. Put the food in a small container add tank water mix it up and feed the sea monkeys.

I expect more to die and the tank will finally stabilize.

So excited noww haha

Low flow Air Pump

Hello there,

I am currently rocking a small Seamonkey setup with about 1.3 liters of water. everything is working fine and they are alive for about 2 month now. The problem is my (verry cheap) air pump form Amazon is getting loud and losing airflow over a few hours. so basically I am adjusting the flow every few hours to keep the air running.

I have.air control valve and a USB power regulator ( designed for pc fans ) but my guess is the pump is just to tight with the air flow valve way closed down to get to the low air flow we need to keep sea monkeys.

my question now is what pumps are you guys recommending that are small and silent and have a verry small output of air ?

thank you so much
