Hardware IPMI not detecting Supermicro AOC-S3008L-L8i v2 IT HBA

Good evening,

New to this section and have some questions regarding the Supermicro branded LSI-9003 cards. My current setup is an X11DPU with two Xeon Gold 6248's, 512gb DDR4 ecc 2133 ram, NVIDIA Tesla P100 16g, 3 sas3 LSI-9003 cards, 12 3.5 bays and two external 4 3.5 bay cages. All firmware BIOS and BMC are most current.

When I use Supermicro branded AOC-S3008L-L8i v2.0 HBA IT cards with the most current 16.00.14.00 firmware the X11 IPMI does not pick up the cards or drives no matter where they are in the PCI slots. If I take a generic LSI-9003 based card and cross flash the Supermicro IT firmware, the cards and drives are found by BMC and IPMI shows the info for each plus they show up in the sensor readings. I like this because it reports the card and average drive temps. I would prefer to use the Supermicro AOC cards as they are slightly smaller and I can fit one with the quad 10g PCI bifurcation card, also the AOC cards have a PC bracket with larger holes for better air flow. I messaged with Supermicro tech support about this. They confirmed that Supermicro SAS3 card firmware on a generic LSI-9003 card would be picked up by the BMC, but refused to acknowledge or explain why the Supermicro AOC-S3008L-L8i cards with the same firmware would not.

Any thoughts, ideas, or explanation would be appreciated.

Question RAM compatibility

Hi peeps, I am planning an AI server build and am looking at the ASRock Rack ROMED8-2T and Supermicro H12SSL motherboards to pair with an EPYC cpu.

As we know, the RAM prices are insane and I have found some 6 year old 64GB modules locally for cheap and I would like to know if anyone can confirm if they work in either of these or related motherboards.

This is the link to the RAM:

https://memory.net/product/hmaa8gr7a2r4n-vn-sk-hynix-1x-64gb-ddr4-2666-rdimm-pc4-21300v-r-quad-rank-x4-module/

I have couldn't find it on these two motherboard QVL but my understanding is that some modules are compatible even if they are not listed.

Backup multiple vServers

Hello there,

I have multiple vServers (cloud Servers) up & running and I'm searching for a centralized backup solution. Like one backup server to rule them all. Preferrably open source with sso support (using authentik). The Servers are not on the same local network by the way.

What would you recommend?

9300-16i chip temps very different?

Hi all,

Any experience with the two chips on the HBA having 10oC difference?

Placement of the fan makes no difference. Even if the fan is at a distance from the heatsink and on an angle (so at a disadvantage for part of the heatsink) the difference is around 9 or 10oC

At the moment idle is 45 and 54oC (with some test I can see 50 and 60) but the question is why the difference. I have seen online up to 3-4oC (with unknown cooling).

Any ideas?

Question newbie help, how to migrate from TrueNAS core to something else with data on SMB

Hey guys.

So, a few years ago I made a TrueNAS Core server to setup as mostly a dump for family pictures and to use for PLEX streaming (the latter which i never could get working).

Since I set it up, I kind of regret going with TrueNAS core. When I built it, I only put in one large capacity drive and my plan was to add in more storage when I could, like with Unraid or something. However it wasn't until after I built it and had files on it that I learned you can't do that, and that I'd need to reformat everything to add in new drives.

Additionally, now I want to self host a Windrose game server, but because Core is BSD based, I'm discovering there's no way that I can do that without more tinkering than I know how to do. And that's part of the issue. Frankly, the way its set up is too much for me to learn while I have data I don't want to risk losing. I was hoping to dive in and learn as I go, but I've never found my footing and now feel too timid to try and experiment in case I screw something up.

I want a fresh start, something more flexible than Core (which i know is being phased out anyway) that will do what I'd like it to do (NAS, Jellyfin media server, selfhosting, possibly virtualization), while also being flexible so I can try and fail without risking my data. So, two questions:

  1. what would be a good server to try? I have a license for HexOS from a while ago, Unraid is something I know is powerful but I don't have any specific knowledge of it, and I saw on another thread someone brought up using a hypervisor, which sounds attractive since I want to learn more about VMs and VM management. But for all of this, I know I have lots of partial knowledge but lack a deep enough understanding to string it all together.

  2. How can I handle the roughly 6tb of personal data already on my NAS? I have a couple of ideas, but I don't feel confident on them.

Thank you guys for your help. And if anyone has any learning resources where I can build out my fundamental knowledge, I'd appreciate those suggestions too.

Could you please recommend a 5 GHz PCIe Wi-Fi card with 2 antennas that's compatible with Debian? It's for connecting a server to the Internet; right now, I can't run a cable, so I need a quick solution.

Hardware Not work backplane on Server Inspur

I bought an Inspur NF5280m5 (3.5' x 12 config) server for homelab. After the launch, it turned out that the backplate board (YZBB-00789-101) was not detected . I checked the power supply, 2 12V lines and 2 5V lines are coming. GND is connected to the case. Next, I went to check the raid controller. It is connected, there are no visual problems with it, the indicator blinks green. How can I check it? The board should be in good working order, as the server has worked 5000 hours and was bought by me. Can you tell me what the problem might be?

P.S. There are 3 Micro-fit 3.0 connectors on the motherboard. Am I correct in assuming that there is no difference in connection? The multimeter shows the same power values. And i connect only one power supply. Could this be the problem?

UPD: Backplate powered by 2 8-pin cabel with microfit 3.0 connector. Closer to latch (top) two 5V line and two 12v line, bottom 4 line GND. I check voltage on backplate connector. On 12V line i have 1V. After this i check what changed if i dissconnect 1 cable. Same thing, in 12 V line both cable i dont see 12V. And after i dissconnect both power cable i see in 12V line all 12V in my multimeter. What are you think, maybe its short circuit on backplate?

Is it possible to add a second backplane to a Dell T330?

Lately I have come across a cheap Dell Poweredge T330 that I wanted to convert into a truenas server. It's current configuration is 8x3.5" and I would like to an additional 16x2.5" backplane, taken from a T620 sibling. I know I will need an additional controller.

I have been trying to figure out whether this can be easily done but the documentation doesn't make it clear. I have seen some T620 servers on ebay with 32x2.5" (so two backplanes) but never a configuration where it's one 3.5" backplane and one 2.5".

Does anyone has this server in their homelab and has tried this?

Home server office pc

I’m looking to build a home server and would appreciate some advice on what hardware to go for.

Budget: £200–250, ideally as cheap as possible without sacrificing too much performance. I’m happy to buy used parts or a refurbished office PC.

What I’m looking for:

  • At least 2 × 3.5-inch HDD bays, preferably with room to expand in the future.
  • A relatively modern motherboard and chipset.
  • 16–32GB DDR4 RAM, ideally with the option to upgrade to 32GB or more.
  • A decent CPU that offers good performance without excessive power consumption.
  • Enough SATA ports for multiple HDDs and ideally an M.2 slot for an SSD.

What I want to run:

  • Plex media server, ideally with hardware transcoding.
  • NAS for file storage.
  • Minecraft server for a small number of players, potentially modded.
  • Pi-hole and possibly other self-hosted services in the future.

I’m based in the UK, so recommendations for used PCs, eBay bargains, or custom builds using second-hand components would be particularly helpful.

Question Running gaming servers

I wanna start being able to run my own servers for me and my friends so we can play private Minecraft servers or our own days servers without having to pay for subscriptions but I don’t want to run them on my own pc should I get a mini pc to run them or should I go for something stronger (there would only be like 5 to 10 people on the servers so let me know if that’s even worth getting a server for)

Question HPE DL380 Gen9 powering an NVIDIA L40S from the 10pin GPU power connectors?

Hi,

I have an HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 that was previously running NVIDIA Tesla GPUs. The server already has the GPU enablement hardware, high-performance fans and 2× 1400W PSUs.

I would like to install an NVIDIA L40S (350W), which uses the 16-pin 12VHPWR/CEM5 power connector.

My DL380 Gen9 has several unused 10-pin GPU power connectors on the PCIe risers. These were originally used to power the Tesla GPUs.

Has anyone successfully powered an L40/L40S, RTX 6000 Ada, H100 PCIe, or another 12VHPWR GPU in a DL380 Gen9 using these 10-pin connectors?

Specifically, I'm trying to figure out:

  • Is there a known HPE 10-pin → 12VHPWR/16-pin cable?
  • Can two (or more) of the HPE 10-pin outputs safely be combined to power one 350W L40S?
  • Has anyone used HPE 10-pin → 8-pin cables and then a 2×/3× 8-pin → 12VHPWR adapter?
  • How did you handle the 12VHPWR sense pins so the L40S detects sufficient available power?
  • Does anyone know the actual power/current rating and pinout of the 10-pin GPU connectors on the DL380 Gen9 risers?

I'm trying to find a known working/safe solution.

If anyone has done something similar, I'd really appreciate the cable part numbers, pinout, photos, or details of the setup.

Thanks!

I’m a small business owner and I have created a cooling tech that allows for being able to submerge enterprise servers in rugged underwater conditions.

I have built and tested a prototype using a 300w Dell PowerEdge R610 server and now need to get a server that incorporates h100sxm GPUs or b200’s.

If anyone would be curious as to what I have built and interested in a partnership, once unit is in water will be using units for running Ai Inference.
