Regardless of the quality comparisons, they ate pizza for 10 days out of 14 in Italy? Ye gods...

those are the same people who claim Italian cuisine is all pasta and pizza, that we don't have a balanced diet that has proteins and the assorted BS.

I did ate pizza 6 days out of 8, but I was 15, oldest of the group was 16 or 17

I was that age once too, but England hadn't yet discovered pizza at that time. šŸ˜‚

1

u/Eastern-Reindeer6838 5h ago

Pizza Express started in 1965 in England.

0

u/Nedsel 6h ago

Yeah, but then again... food in England...

You know the old joke about the 3 thinnest books in history?

The American book of etiquette.
The book of Italian heroes.
And the British cook book.

u/1nspectorCPW Human Verified 6h ago

Ouch! 🤣

1

u/Eastern-Reindeer6838 5h ago

You did eat goser.

3

u/theystolemyusername 8h ago

I once caught myself eating pizza for fifth week in a row and asked myself "What are you bulking for?". And that was just 5 slices across the whole month. If I ate 10 pizzas in two weeks, objects would start orbiting around me.

3

u/Nedsel 6h ago

You can eat pizza in Italy 24/7 and not get tired of it.

It just really is SO good!

0

u/Ornery-Customer8521 5h ago

Also Italian pizza isnt nearly as unhealthy

5

u/redcomet29 9h ago

I've done 2 trips to Italy, total of 22 days. I only didnt have pizza on one of them, haha.

1

u/Fibro-Mite 7h ago

I've been to Italy twice, never had pizza and barely had any pasta while there.

2

u/X-e-o 9h ago

Really depends what kind of pizza we're talking about here. You could have a slice (or rather a square) of roman style pizza on the go damn near every day as a quick bite.

1

u/Beautiful_Bell2311 5h ago

There's nothing wrong with a quick bite. Pizza, if it's a Roman square or lovely foldable slice at some local NY place with lashings of dehydrated parmesam that only exists as niche in Europe. Both are fantastic and illustrative of excellent food culture which are different but no less valid - even if alluding to virtually the same thing. Oth would hit the spot on different occasions. It doesn't make anything better than the other.

Is it Detroit or Philly where the sauce is on top of the fillings? Have to say that's awesome. Wherever, that's great pizza. The one in Italy where it's Parma-style ham served cold with rocket leaves on a hot thin base pizza with white sauce is my favourite (forget the name, sorry). I love the way the rocket wilts and fat dissolves from the ham. But what moron doesn't want a slice of what's good locally? The format doesn't matter, unless you're allergic of course.

u/Maus_Sveti 8h ago

Right? I love pizza, but one of my favourite things when I’m in Italy is exploring the depth of local specialities which are not well-known or widely-available outside of Italy. Like, I’ll have a stuffed quail or a bean soup or whatever it is that is typical of the region and I’ve never seen before.

1

u/Suitable-Fun-1087 7h ago

Good thing Italy isn't known for any other fantastic dishes /s

u/Frequent_Waltz_166 9h ago

Why would anyone need to debate their personal food preferences? Wut...

17

u/PrimaryMaize6580 9h ago

I mean, I’m 101% sure it’s a matter of personal preference. For me, the Alibi restaurant in DunaĆŗjvĆ”ros makes the best pizza ever. It’s just OMG-level pizza. At the same time, I KNOW it barely has anything to do with Italian pizza.
We just move on, accept the food for what it is, eat it, have fun, and move on. Awesome.
You don’t have to tell everyone that American food is a borderline biological weapon.

2

u/Sepelrastas 8h ago

Best pizza I've ever had was in Berlin. It was Italian style, in a place called something Biblical (12 Apostel I think). Never been to Italy though, so perhaps I would like those better. This was 2006, so it has been a while.

I most often eat frozen pizza, and that definitely won't win any prizes.

2

u/90210fred 9h ago

No mate, you're so wrong: Black Pizza, Nagykanizsa, circa 1998. Just pass on the ketchup

1

u/Nedsel 6h ago

I think I should warn you, people have been beaten up for less than asking for ketchup for a pizza in Italy.

I think I should leave that here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VpBJTYlDF8Q

13

u/ComfortPhil 9h ago

Because they're Muhrican and very insecure

4

u/SpamLandy 9h ago

It’s because he doesn’t think he’s staring a preference, he thinks he’s stating a factĀ

2

u/Frequent_Waltz_166 5h ago

Ah yeah that makes sense, the classic mix up of treating a personal preference like an objective fact lol. Very American!

1

u/No_Slip_5877 9h ago

Because: who says no to a debate? :)

u/lolexecs 9h ago

2

u/scottishBongo 9h ago

Its not even personal food preferences.

Its a lack of understanding that food will taste slightly different due to grains, soils etc around the world.

Someone in US basing their food on how they implant chemicals into their agriculture versus a very organic Italian cuisine is patronising at best.

...That's amorešŸŽµ

3

u/MaddogFinland 9h ago

It’s slang particular to the northeast us. Meaning New York and so on. And it’s something that Italian American immigrants came up with so what are you gonna do. Immigrants show up and call stuff things.

For example in American Chinese food they have ā€œGeneral Tso Chickenā€ made up by a guy who ran a Chinese restaurant. It’s good but don’t bother asking any actual Chinese people what the hell it is because they don’t know the dish or who the general was.

And wherever you are from I will guarantee you have some kind of food that is names for somewhere else that has nothing to do with it.

12

u/Oryx_1 9h ago

honestly, this one is Okay. New York has good pizza, if they like it better, good for them

4

u/Hades_Mercedes Teach me how to say gross shit to women in French āšœļø 9h ago edited 8h ago

Everywhere has good pizza. Find a place that does thin crust, buck-a-slice Neapolitan pizza in Edmonton. It'll be identical to 'NY pizza'. This is such a lame thing to be proud of and so embarrassingly transparent to anybody that's ever travelled just a tiny, teeny bit in their lives.

2

u/No_Slip_5877 9h ago

Way too diplomatic ;)

24

u/scottishBongo 9h ago

Tbf if they were in a tourist trap of Italy its likely overpriced and underwhelming.

But the argument is nonsense. True authentic and traditional Italian pizza and pasta are incredible. Simple ingredients but amazing.

3

u/Turak64 8h ago

That's the whole point about Italian food. Very simple, not that many ingredients, but the quality is beyond anything else you can find almost anywhere else. The tomatoes, olive oil, cheese, pasta etc all world class.

Just don't go to the obvious tourist restaurants. Go to places without an English menu.

9

u/FitShare2972 9h ago edited 9h ago

Americans taste buds are so used to chemicals and sugar. I genuinely believe they cant handle food without them. Hersey chocolate contains the same chemical as vomit yet they cant taste it i samurai could.

Edit: leaving mistake in as its funny autocorrect. But I acymtauly meant sure could not samurai could

2

u/Suitable-Fun-1087 7h ago

And Americans frequently struggle with authentic Italian cuisine because an Italian dish will often be made with a single herb or spice; not some horrific mix labelled as "Italian seasoning" and enough garlic to take out dracula. Basically the septics have frequently ruined their taste buds before they even try it

5

u/expresstrollroute 9h ago

"Italian pizza". Because the entire country only makes one kind of pizza. /s

6

u/jolittletime 7h ago

If they ate carbonara pizza in Italy it was in a tourist place.

11

u/pan_alice 9h ago

Pizza 10/14 days seems like a lot.

'thats the thing about Italian pizza. You could walk into some random little restaurant and have an incredible pie.'

I don't understand what point they are trying to make here. They still didn't like it.

8

u/MaddogFinland 9h ago

They didn’t say they didn’t like it. They said it was incredible but the pizza where they were from was better. I doubt that’s possible, but they didn’t say they didn’t like it.

5

u/Brohemoth1991 8h ago

People in this sub getting bent out of shape because someone said "Italian pizza was great, but I prefer NY pizza" is kinda hilarious

8

u/Tough_Stretch 9h ago edited 6h ago

It's the usual American dumbfuckery. The argument boils down to "I had amazing pizza in Italy every day and you could get it basically anywhere at any point, but American pizza is better than Italian because I once had this one pizza in this one specific place in NY that I think tasted better than all the pizzas I had in Italy, and therefore it's impossible that a single place exists in Italy that sells a pizza that is just as good or better than the one I had in NY."

If anybody had asked him if he could have gone in any random little restaurant in the US and had an incredible pizza the answer would be "No" but he'd have come up with some bullshit excuse about why that is irrelevant and American pizza is of course superior because of reasons.

I've had amazing pizzas in multiple countries and the best I've had are comparable to each other as far as how enjoyable they were even if they weren't identical, much less genuinely Italian, but Americans struggle with such a concept.

This is just anecdotal, but to give an example of this mentality I once had a conversation with an American colleague who told me Pollo Loco (a roasted chicken restaurant chain from Mexico that has locations in the US and some other countries) was better in the US than in Mexico because in the US they gave you better condiments and when he asked for ranch dressing and similar crap in Mexico they looked at him like he was a maniac and told him they didn't carry any of that and they just had several different kinds of salsas.

Anybody who is not a moron wouldn't argue that since they don't like salsas as much as ranch dressing, that means American Pollo Loco is better. This guy certainly argued that point despite the fact that most of the local customers would've thrown up on the spot if you forced them switch the traditional green and red salsas for ranch dressing.

8

u/New-Pie-8846 Yes, I speak more than "English". 9h ago

Is that... Flatbread??? And what do you mean - pie????

10

u/Jenuinlizard 9h ago

seems like a pinsa romana and that oop was not able to recognize that is not pizza.

or can be a pizza metro, another kind of pizza that is for parties and large groups.

2

u/OnlyHereForTheTip 9h ago

That’s what it probably is. Especially, given the carbonara flavour!

2

u/WalloonNerd 8h ago

For an American, a group-pizza is normal sized

2

u/MaddogFinland 9h ago

It’s regional slang particular to the NE corner of the US. Only rarely would you hear it outside of there.

Pizza is pretty much good everywhere but the definitive pizza is made in Italy because it’s Italian.

1

u/OnlyHereForTheTip 9h ago

Wheeeeen the moon hits your eye like a big PIZZA PIE šŸ˜‚

1

Just a word for pizza here

6

u/LucyLovesApples 9h ago

Pizza isn’t pie. When are they going to realise this?!

3

u/Choice_Pineapple_461 9h ago

Johns on Bleeker is outstanding. Don't agree with the overall premise of the post but it isn't either/ or. NYC does have excellent pizza.

3

u/Baleeverne 9h ago

I don't think that's a shit take apart from "NY pizza".

They specifically mention 2 restaurants too.

I'm French and, as you know, we can be dicks about food, and I know there are amazing French food restaurant all over the world and maybe some are top3 without being in France

3

u/gourmetguy2000 8h ago

Tbf everyone is entitled to an opinion, if they enjoy American pizza more that's fair. He's not saying Italian pizza is shit

5

u/ptvlm 9h ago

Yeah, this is what I don’t understand. They don’t think of New York pizza as being a general thing, they insist on naming the individual restaurants they like best. But, they can’t expand that and say that Italy has variety, they say that their random sampling of wherever they happened to be is representative of the entire country. I get preferring the stuff that’s been catered to American tastes, I don’t get why they don’t see the logical inconsistency here.

4

u/Own-Perception-4262 8h ago

Spanish here. I don't think just because pizza was invented in Italy, means no one else can do it better. I believe American pizzas might be more flavorful and easier to enjoy for the average person. But Italian pizza, is a lot more simple and efficient. Since i'm Mediterranean, i enjoy Italian pizza better, cause it's simplicity, you get to actually taste the toppings, more doesn't mean better in Mediterranean food. That's it

0

u/RoiDrannoc 7h ago

I agree. I'm French and I personally prefer the pizza of the food truck of my city over Italian ones. I think the Italian ones lack toppings. I know they are the traditional ones and I respect that but I was never amazed by the Italian pizza

3

u/Own-Perception-4262 7h ago

Ya, that's fair. I mean there's no secret recipe with Italian pizza. That's all down to preference. It's literally just doe with toppings haha

0

u/D_I_Wood 6h ago

And because thats what pizza is all anout, if we research it even further back in time, Ancient Greeks had a type of food called "plakountas" that was literally dough with toppings that each area was producing lol . Also, one of its variations, was using feta cheese or ricotta style with honey and nuts and a lot of ppl are saying that it was the an ancient cheescake version. Go figure

2

u/Matthew-ii 6h ago

This might be the only reasonable conversation I've ever witnessed on this subreddit, while it's popped into my feed.

0

u/Own-Perception-4262 6h ago

The greeks and the Egyptians had similar stuff before Italian pizza. I mean, Italian food is unreal, but they've done very very well at marketing their cuisine

1

u/D_I_Wood 6h ago

I agree 100% Italians marketed their cuisine extremely well. It also helped that USA is literally built by Italian immigrants, so its no surprise that Italian cuisine is so popular.

But likey gramma used to say, when it comes to taste its always up to you what you like and nobody can convince you otherwise lol

2

u/Jenuinlizard 9h ago

i think that is a pinsa, not even a pizza

2

u/pinniped90 Human Verified 8h ago

"Hot take"?

Bro thinks he's the first person to glaze NY pizza on the Internet.

I don't even care about the take - you can jock Chicago, New York, Naples, or East Bumblefuck pizza for all I care - and if you have legit recommendations I might even be interested in them.

But dickriding NY style is the farthest thing possible from a hot take.

2

u/Chance_Vegetable_780 7h ago

All I know is that the three slices I had in Rome were so delicious that nothing NY has ever come near them. Us americans be brainwashed over pizza too

2

u/Aggressive-Map-2204 5h ago

Its a fair comment to make. Different people like and are used to different things. Italian pizza and American pizza can be very different and its not wrong to prefer one over the other.

3

u/reddititaly 9h ago

I was in New York for work last year. I'm Italian and I had heard so much about New York pizza that I decided to have one after work. My mistake, I know.

It was completely inedible. The sauce was so sweet it tasted like cake topping, the dough has the consistency of pie. And it wasn't some sketchy back alley pizza place, it's one of the most recommended and known, always in some top ten list.

Glad you like it, won't partake anymore

3

u/Shroomkaboom75 9h ago

This doesnt belong in SAS.

They said they liked it, mentioned locations, but prefer the one from home.

What if it was reversed? Would people start clowning on the Italian for having an opinion?

0

u/Theonearmedbard 7h ago

No an Italian saying Italian pizza is better would just be objectively correct.

1

u/RoiDrannoc 7h ago

Yeah as a French I've tasted Italian pizza many times over and while it was good I was not especially impressed...

0

u/Theonearmedbard 7h ago

Well you are french so that makes sense /j

What type of culinary delight is a "carbonara pizza"?!

1

u/DavidJonnsJewellery 9h ago

They're gonna be different because of the tastes you're catering to. I remember the Italian chef Antonio Carluccio talking about when he first came to Britain. He tried spaghetti bolognese and said it was a totally different dish to what he had back home. It tasted nothing like the original

Might be pinsa or might be some kind of take on Pizza al Taglio.

That's before we come to new York pizza Vs "Italian pizza". Not American Vs Italian. Not new York Vs Naples, or Vs Rome. Did they even visit an Italian region that's known for its pizza?

1

Honedtly, fair enough. You're allowed an opinion, they shared their opinion. They didn't state it as fact, and they even said they're open to debate.

1

u/Then_Profession_7628 4h ago

Not that bothered by this one. The US has definitely focused and refined pizza that originated in Italy. I've loved the pizza I've eaten in the US and in Italy. It is subjective though - the styles wildly differ and the US has extended their own variations of pizza. I watch enough of One Bite to know that John's on Bleecker is one of the best rated pizza restaurants in the US, did the poster research and visit the best rated pizza restaurants in Italy for a fair comparison? Are we comparing Neapolitan, Sicilian or Roman?

1

u/Yop_BombNA 2h ago

Best pizza I’ve had was in Toronto at Badiali’s.

I don’t think that saying NY pizza > Italian pizza is controversial or crazzy. It’s a matter of opinion.

1

u/Feuershark 1h ago

if the picture is telling it all about the pizza they ate, looks like they ate the same kind of pizza they ate at home from chains and super basic restaurants

1

u/Beautiful_Bell2311 6h ago

Your choice in pizza preference is entirely subjective, like how you personally like your steal cooked. None are bad, just down to personal preference. In what world is a steak or pizza going to be awful?! But it might not be to your exact liking.

I love NY, but will struggle to get in now as I've been to Cuba and there's photos of me sta ding by the Lada cars with American shells and visiting ChƩ's mausoleum. I'm not a Commie, never have been - just seemed an interesting place to visit as it's quite different to the UK, and I work in the Arts which presumably means I'm conspiring with Sean Penn in a Moscow hotel room to bring down America. Clue, I'm really not. I'm just interested in our blue/green dot beyond my local area. And particularly the people who inhabit it who have different interests, personal passions and localised things they love that I'm not aware of.

There really is this strange thing of American Exceptionalism where it's apparently a great thing thing that you can buy an identical bowl of soup in CA as you can in NY. And that's actually true. Literally identical. And it's seasoned which apparently simply doesn't happen in Europe according to people who've never been there. And we haven't invented black people yet either, which is bought up a lot by Americans who've also never been here. Despite the black people walking around we've apparently spray painted for extremely unclear reasons. Probably for Americans to spot?! It really is becoming quite unclear where you lot are going with this.

I can assure you that pissing off Americans is very low on our priority list. If European things piss you off, it's a case of sorry not sorry. We have our own issues to deal with like you do. We'd just have preferred to have worked on it together, as that'd likely deliver a better solution, but you've been telling us to fuck ourselves for 6 out of the last 10 years, so our patience is wearing a little thinner than usual.

Europe isn't a homogenous mass like you seem to believe. We don't need people who's great grandad was Scottish from Cardiff and has the right tartan. That's deliberately satirical BTW. We don't need your money as your debt level has reached a point that if we were to cash the bonds, our governments could actually send out Doge-style checks/cheques with no financial impact at all and you'd be literally fucked. The entirely normal domestic functions of government would be forced to stop in a massive extension of the city/regional ones that are totally normal in the First World you've been doing. Your government would just collapse as you are staggeringly leveraged. You couldn't afford to fuel the President's clearly bugged airplane.

This is actually a rant, and I do apologise if anyone is offended as I'm not one bit hostile towards the American people. Far from it. You've just got into so much debt that was probably manageable until a certain Orange Idiot piled it on without realising you can't restrict Bond retraction. You are literally relying on good will, which you're burning through daily. Japan alone withdrawing it's bonds would sink you 1.5x over. That won't happen, not because anyone's afraid of you anymore, but because it's not reasonable to sink people into an Ecomic Depression that's not their fault as Private Citizens. It would be worse than the 30s because of the simple depth of it. No-one deserves that if it can be avoided.

TL; DR

0

u/Jumpy_Selection_602 8h ago

Yea i gotta agree on this one

0

American pizza is definitely better than Italian and I dont care what anybody says. If you want to pretend that Italys archaic recipes are better, then you be my guest, but im not going to lie to myself. Italians are so far up their own asses about their tomato bread with cheese lol.
