“Sophie Cunningham content is not banned from  r/wnba. Posts about Sophie are welcome when they are directly related to basketball, including games, highlights, interviews, injuries, trades, statistics, and other WNBA-related news. However, posts focused primarily on politics, culture-war debates, social media drama, or topics unrelated to basketball may be filtered or removed.  This is not a banon Sophie Cunningham—it is an effort to keep discussions focused on the WNBA and basketball because the amount of trolls and brigades that other Sophie related content has brought to this sub.“

Sounds pretty logical to me.

Read the rest that they bury in the comments:

Yeah, when it's enforced like that. Pro tip, it's not.

Why not just enjoy the shit show in r/wnbagossips instead? That's probably what you're looking for.

u/Dramatic-Bluejay- Aug 17 '26

Its exactly what hes looking for and that subs usuals are exactly the kind of troglodytes/bots WNBA is trying to get rid off.

This sub is far, far more illogical lol. They want to talk about sports. Sophie Cunningham is a politics-baiting shithead and her shenanigans are flooding the sub. Most sane rule of all time.

u/Banned_for_pixels Aug 17 '26

But i can go to that sub right now and see plenty of posts not about basketball

2

u/eaeorls Aug 17 '26

Go look at /r/WNBAGossips and then look at /r/WNBA.

That is what they're trying to stop.

1

u/Banned_for_pixels Aug 17 '26

???? yeah but i literally just said i can go to r/wnba and see plenty of posts not specificallly about basketball.... why bring up the gossips subreddit, that subreddit is FOR off the court stuff/shit posting.

0

u/eaeorls Aug 17 '26

Off the court stuff is part of the sport.

And I can go onto the gossips subreddit and it's just full of posts with thousands of upvotes regarding a very specific 4 players regarding on the court stuff.

They're trying to keep it being a reasonable sub for talking about the sport. It's really only become unreadable today because of shithousery people more interested in drama than actual sports and meta sports discussion.

1

u/Banned_for_pixels Aug 17 '26

Reasonable sub that censors one side of the discussion..... mmhmm

1

u/Spell_correctly_FFS Aug 20 '26

Nope. They will happily post all about it in the opposite direction.

how are they supposed to enforce a rule on posts that existed before the rule

2

u/Escape-from-Alcatraz Aug 17 '26

subreddit mods don't play by rule-of-law, only thing stopping them from applying enforcement of rules retrospectively is when reddit admin intervenes

2

u/devilmaskrascal Aug 17 '26

To be clear since you folks can't tell the difference: They didn't ban all politics, gossip, or non-basketball related posts. They banned brigading by trans-exclusionary trolls who aren't coming there to talk about basketball and have probably never watched a WNBA game in their lives but are using Sophie as a way to attack not only trans women athletes but also Black women, lesbians and "woke" people supporting trans inclusion.

Sophie is the full realization of what they started trying to do with Caitlyn Clark (who herself mostly just wants to play basketball and not participate in this circle jerk.) Sophie enjoys the attention apparently and unlike Clark who is a legit superstar, there is no plausible deniability that these folks are pure fans of her basketball game.

Transphobia (and homophobia and racism) are explicitly banned in the sub rules, and claiming trans-exclusionary politics deserves equivalent treatment to trans-inclusionary politics is a fundamental false equivalency, especially because hardly anyone on the trans-exclusionary side is coming there seeking scientifically-based answers about trans athletes and fairness in women's sports, instead bringing in their pre-existing assumptions and making blanket statements that ignore the diversity of trans athletes and the many differing factors to transitions that require case-by-case discretion to ensure fairness for all.

Exactly. And doesn’t that say discussing her interviews (IE why so many hate her now) is allowed..? So in theory there could be a whole new post about her interview that started this all

5

u/Affectionate_Text_51 Aug 17 '26

  interviews

Isn’t her terfing an interview what started all this anyway? And nobody is allowed to talk about it there? That’s rather comical.

1

u/TurpitudeSnuggery Aug 17 '26

I  have no stake but I have to think people were just posting she was a bitch rather than the greater discussion

2

u/DaedalusPrime44 Aug 17 '26

Get out of here with your facts and evidence!

We want to be outraged!

u/624KR_My_Beloved Aug 17 '26

Sounds great, if it was enforced that way

The mods, like most reddit mods, curate a certain narrative for their community and are very selective in how they apply the rules.

Its about as honest as the mods of r/doomercirclejerk saying that all are welcome and hateful politics will be deleted/banned.

1

u/MyriadFire4 Aug 17 '26

That sounds like a good call.

0

u/Initial_Working_1806 Aug 17 '26

Yea but than when somebody has a political view they support its allowed

1

u/TurpitudeSnuggery Aug 17 '26

I cant say you are right or wrong… but i doubt you know this as fact. I think if masses were coming to a subreddit to talk about a single person outside of the intended context this would happen.

I believe what probably happened was people took to Reddit to call her a bitch/hero rather than talk about any facts.

1

u/Initial_Working_1806 Aug 17 '26

It is a fact, like every different sub is a echo chamber regardless of views. Its just funny that with so much social and political posturing everyone is a hypocrite tryna choose when their side is "right" instead of having individual opinions.

u/Born_2_Simp Aug 17 '26

Is the topic of trans players in the WNBA unrelated to basketball and the WNBA?

1

u/TurpitudeSnuggery Aug 17 '26

I know very little about it. What I would assume was happening is people were using the thread to call her a bitch/hero. The instead of having the greater conversation about how the league may change with a trans player

2

u/Born_2_Simp Aug 17 '26

I don't know nor care about women's sports either but I would assume was happening is that anyone arguing against trans players in a women's league is immediately labeled as bigot, transphobic, nazi, etc.. and the only arguments allowed are those against her and in favor of including trans players.
