Just put your phone in a case and a screen protector if you don’t want it to have a patina look

611

u/PocketFullofLace 19d ago

I’m shocked at the psychopath that just have their phones out naked in the wild. Mine go from the box right into the case. But once upon a time I accidentally dropped kicked my LG chocolate into the street so what the hell do I know.

26

u/kapiteinkippepoot 19d ago

Glass on the screen and a rubber on the phone itself. I drop the phone to much not to protect it.

8

u/classygorilla 19d ago

Honestly even if I didn't care about damage, it's so thin it's hard to grip and use. It's also somewhat slippery so just doesn't seem as nice to operate when its naked.

3

u/stages_animate_89 19d ago

I go caseless and drop my phone all of the time. No damage aside from a few minor scratches. These new iPhones are tough as hell

2

u/Nethlem 19d ago

No damage aside from a few minor scratches.

So there is damage? lol

1

u/stages_animate_89 19d ago

lol yea but I’m also rather careless with my phone and drop it hard on the tile probably twice a day. No case, no screen protector. It has a MagSafe pop socket wallet but that’s it. All of small scratches are on the corners and likely wouldn’t exist for someone that is careful with their phone. I like that it’s lighter without a case, it feels better in my hand, and looks fantastic. I haven’t used a case in probably ten years and have had no cracked screens or damaged phones. That includes a pixel 9 pro… so yea, different strokes for different folks.

1

u/Nethlem 18d ago

lol yea but I’m also rather careless with my phone and drop it hard on the tile probably twice a day. No case, no screen protector. It has a MagSafe pop socket wallet but that’s it.

Until that one time you drop it and it ends up landing on just the wrong surface, at just the right angle, cracking the screen.

That's how I learned my lesson like 10 years ago, since then they all go into a protective case with a screen protector.

Both of those even have extra utility; The case has a variable fold out stand, really handy if I want to watch something on the phone and not hold it.

The screen cover has privacy shading, that way people sitting next to me on the subway can't spy on my screen.

That's some nice extra utility in addition to my phones still looking factory new even after years of use.

1

u/stages_animate_89 18d ago

I do use the privacy screen protectors but they ALWAYS break on me. I hate it so I stopped using them. I’ve been caseless for over ten years and haven’t had a screen break. I think I’ll be okay. Plus, cases aren’t free. It’s cheaper to just not use a case and I don’t like how bulky and weird they feel. It serves no purpose for me.

89

u/Aggravating_Lab_7734 19d ago

I don't drop kick my phone, but I still use a case with curved bumpers. Thick and curved edges over slim with sharp edges every time. I want my phones to be built like thicc latinas and not ozempic abuser. 🤐

11

u/Chudpaladin 19d ago

Damn tortas are pretty nice

3

u/Valtand 19d ago

Man after my own heart. I always look for the chunkiest case I can find. I wanna be able to drop it down the stairs into a street and watch it get run over without needing to worry.

1

u/Ayaki_05 19d ago

My old phone was a blackview bv9100. i was worried about the floor everytime i dropped it

1

u/bigbrentos 19d ago

Seriously, without a case, these things are too thin and slick. A case makes it nicer to hold and the hardware buttons nicer to press.

1

u/Maolam10 19d ago

I don't drop my phone at all and I have basically never dropped it, yet I am not crazy as for not to put it in a case!

14

u/kenanzajmovic 19d ago

I had a budget phone or whatever they're called since 2015. Phone itself is 40 bucks I think. I just upgraded in August to a new phone and I didnt even open that box until my case and screen protector arrived like 5 days after. I went through like 10 of those shifty phones and I'm protecting the hell out of this one.

3

u/OkCarpenter5773 19d ago

i do have a naked phone, dropped it several times but in the last 5 years of usage i have only slightly scratched one corner and chipped a 0.5mm dent in the screen. some small scratches on the screen but not cracked at all. mi11i bought 5 years ago. running android 16 and i couldn't ask for more

3

u/Unchiled 19d ago

Honestly every case I get eventually scratches the phone with dust and friction even if it's soft so idk

3

u/DK4E2XFpbETJrj 19d ago

I went through 16 generations of iPhone without a case or screen protector. I caved on my current phone after acknowledging I've only ever replaced my iPhone because i broke the screen in one way or another. Every single previous phone was replaced because of a cracked/shattered front screen or backplate.

2

u/Former_Property1047 19d ago

Meanwhile hammer phones

1

u/PocketFullofLace 19d ago

Omg that’s awesome.

2

u/turkefc 19d ago

How do you accidentally drop kick something? ...

4

u/IntJosh34 19d ago

Accidently drop and then accidently kick in quick succession.

1

u/erebus2161 19d ago

You're walking, you drop it, it hits your foot as you're taking a step.

2

u/Notsurehowtoreact 19d ago

Recently my Pixel 10 flew off the roof of my car because I hadn't realized it was on there at all (placed it there when lassoing my toddler), and while it stuck via magnet for awhile it eventually slid off.

Phone survived. Case scuffed, glass screen protectors on front and camera shattered.

No other damage and the phone works fine. Cases work wonders so it's wild people refuse to use them.

2

u/TheMudbloodSlytherin 19d ago

I just upgraded from the iPhone 11, I keep my phones until I HAVE to get a new one. It’s been in a case with a screen protector since I got it… it still looks new.

1

u/PocketFullofLace 19d ago

Same, why replace it if it works?

2

u/tnnrk 19d ago

The way I look at it, I’d rather have some outer wear/damage and use the phone as intended than have to wrap an expensive item in rubber right away. The screens are really hard to break nowadays from my experience dropping my phone enough times.

Also I want to see the color I picked too which is silly but true.

2

u/5WattBulb 19d ago

Ahh a fellow "if I drop this, I instinctively try to catch it with my foot. But occasionally mistime it and punt it across the room/street, thus making it worse than if I just let it hit the floor"

2

u/PooleBoy_Q 19d ago

I have slammed at least 3 phones in a car door.

2

u/slayer_of_waspiz 19d ago

In the day between ordering a new screen protector and receiving it and putting it on my phone, it fell out of my pocket and shattered. Protectors and cases, with all the 2FA shit these days replacing your phone is a massive PITA.

2

u/3l0v 17d ago

Very apple employee coded to not have a case on

1

u/Ameliandras 19d ago

My Fairphone is naked. It's really durable and when something breaks I just use my 100€ repair coupon.

1

u/Tragilos 19d ago

No case nor screen protector for me. Though, screen protectors are def worth it but cases not as much

1

u/CharlesNeofist 19d ago

Lol I feel naked just redoing the screen protector

1

u/rygo796 19d ago

I haven't used a case in over 2 years. Drop my phone all the time on concrete, asphalt etc. No problems. FWIW it's a Pixel 9. Pixel 6 before that.

1

u/UnikornKebab 19d ago

1

u/Valerian_ 19d ago

TIL there are two meanings to drop kick, I only knew the one about jumping forward and then hitting someone in mid-air with both feets, I had to google drop kick because it seemed really weird in your context

1

u/HoleyBody 19d ago

Thanks grandpa

1

u/ImpossibleInternet3 19d ago

I remember when the chocolate came out. People were smelling the phone at Verizon stores because they thought it might be scented like chocolate.

1

u/Malicious_999 19d ago

You gotta understand half of these fucks wanna flex more than anything. Go to r/iphone18pro and you'll see.

1

u/Rellek_ 19d ago

I carried an iPhone for years without a case and most people had a similar reaction; that I was crazy for doing it. I somehow managed to not break any of them. As the screen size grew though, I started to become less comfortable.

I was far less careful after putting on a case, which I only realized in hindsight. Ended up shattering the screen from a short drop. Go figure! But I still stuck with the case.

The build quality of Apple’s hardware is something I still appreciate today and it makes me want to return to case less, but at the end of the day I know it’s just not worth it.

1

u/ForrestMoth 19d ago

I have a pixel fold (i think it's the first gen) and every case I've tried for it has been pretty terrible, unfortunately. They either have a fake screen protector that gets scratched by a gentle breeze or the front plate shifts all the time and ends up breaking from that. Even the otterbox case was pretty bad for this. At like $30-$60 a case after trying like 5 cases it starts to feel like I'm getting scammed. At least phones are a lot more durable these days, and I've never cracked a screen. I'm pretty careful with my stuff. I would still prefer to have a case, but I'm tired of trying all the bad ones.

1

u/JoeBiden-2016 19d ago

I've been noticing that for some reason, characters in The Bear never have phone protectors.

1

u/Classy_Mouse 19d ago

The backglass replacement kit for my S20 cost $20. At that point, the backglass is the case, it breaks and protects the rest of the phone

1

u/Neveed 19d ago

I recently broke my phone by dropping it on a tile floor. The already cracked screen just stopped working.

I had tried to get a cover for it a few years ago, but all the covers were for the other version of the same model, that was a sligthly different format and wouldn't fit on mine. I never found one that fit on mine. I probably could have managed to mcguyver something, but eventually, laziness got the better of me.

1

u/VRS302 19d ago

I bought a metal and glass phone why would I want to feel nasty plastic whenever I use it?

1

u/soul_glider 19d ago

Why do people care about their phone color if it goes right into a case ?

1

u/Adirtan 19d ago

I have to admit, im.half psychopath, I use case but never screen protector..never broke my screen in my life and especially with iPhone, I never noticed Micro scratches even after 2 years

1

u/dannyorangeit 19d ago

Im one of those psychopaths but I think of it differently... I dislike putting my phone in a cheap and bulky plastic case because i like to appreciate the design of the phone and the 'feel' of it as intended. I try not being on my phone all the time and taking care when i do take it out of my pocket. I buy used flagships, so I appreciate people like you who might buy new and protect the phone so its shiny when i buy it eventually. Once I eventually do damage a phone it is getting near obsolete (5 models or so behind).

1

u/Darolaho 19d ago edited 19d ago

Every time I have broken my phone a case did nothing it is always the screen gets hit face on.

Been almost two years without a case and going strong. I drop it less as well because it is lighter and smaller. I do have a dbrand skin on so the back has better grip

Phones have gotten so strong you really don't need one

1

u/Enjoyer_of_40K 19d ago

can you recreate the drop kick on video?

1

u/Jesus__Skywalker 19d ago

This was exactly what I said. If I see a naked phone I think that this is either the least responsible person on earth or that's a mothafucka that's truly made it.

1

u/rapaxus 19d ago

As someone who does that, I just never had cracks in my phone and the times I really trashed my phones, a case wouldn't have helped (e.g. I destroyed the last one by it falling out of my pocket at 30 km/h on a bicycle). And I am a person who drops their phone constantly (though nearly only when sitting).

I am never planning on reselling my phones, by the time I switch phones my old one is generally worth scrap. So as long as the screens doesn't break and the chassis doesn't dent like hell, I am okay with some wear&tear.

And my Pixel 10 is nearly a year old now and still looks basically brand new out of the box besides a few tiny defects.

1

u/faduqdo 19d ago

I haven't had a case on an iphone for 6 years, my 17pro Max still looks brand new. Id say you are the psychopaths that cant keep their phones in decent condition. Also you are ruining the literal billions they spent on R&D getting this as thin as possible and you slap a $15 dollar case on it LOL. That is truly crazy behavior.

1

u/NSA-SURVEILLANCE 19d ago

It’s a tool, it will be replaced. I rock my phone as intended and barely have a nick or two by the end of my phones’ lifecycle (roughly five years).

1

u/astro143 19d ago

My buddy did that with an iphone X, just ran it naked. His reasoning was if it breaks it breaks.

1

u/EclipseOra3k3 19d ago

Whenever I see people using their phones without a case, I'm just amazed by their courage

1

u/aavant-gardee 19d ago

I have rawdogged my phone for over a year. She’s got some dents here and there for sure. I’ve dropped it on rocks, concrete, pavement etc numerous times. Screen is not cracked.

1

u/JustBadUserNamesLeft 18d ago

Never had my original first-generation iPhone in a case. Never dropped it or scratched it (and I still have it as a conversation piece). Maybe I was able to hold onto it because it was a small, one-handed device, as Steve Jobs intended.

1

u/corruptedsyntax 18d ago

That’s what the AppleCare is for.

Only reason I bother with a case is because I swear Apple found a way to create a negative coefficient friction.

1

u/Resident-Athlete-268 18d ago

My wife uses a case and screen protector and has gone through 3 screen replacements and 2 phones while I’m still rocking a naked iPhone 12 Pro

1

u/lorenzoinari 16d ago

Personally I would hate buying a phone of which I like the design and the material (not that it's the primary factor, but if I found it ugly I wouldn't have bought it) and then just never see it or hold it, plus it gets bulky with a case! I'm not even that careful with it, it's just a phone I don't care that much, but I almost never dropped it. It's either in my pocket or on a table I don't see how that could happen. Glass screen protector and naked phone all the way

I know now that I said this it will somehow fall catastrophically from the 7th floor or something wish me luck

1

u/AdamN 19d ago

1 year with the iPhone Air no case no problem. Feels awesome that way and really light.

1

u/ExcellentEffort1752 19d ago

Never had a phone case. Also never had a cracked screen or even a scratch. I honestly don't understand how so many people manage to scratch or crack their screens.

1

u/keybladesrus 19d ago

Same. I've had my current phone for years now with no case or screen protector, and I've had no issues at all. Granted, it was fairly cheap as phone prices go, so I'd probably be more paranoid about it if I paid $1000+, but I don't know why I would ever spend that much on a phone in the first place, so...

0

u/JalapenoPopPoop 19d ago

Yeah I haven't used a case in over 10 years now and people always ask me how I do it, but I always respond that it amazes me that no one has any trouble holding on to things without dropping them until it's their $1200 phone, like how are y'all just randomly dropping your phone so much that its an issue? I don't struggle to hold on to things

1

u/mapoftasmania 19d ago

Those people are rich. It’s that simple. If it breaks, they just buy a new one.

1

u/Ok_Somewhere_9962 19d ago

Apparently the youths don’t like phone cases or pop socket’s or anything else that has a function for their phones

0

u/GuyBitchie 19d ago

You get a flagship phone, slim, slick and with a nice material and finish, feels amazing in your hands and first thing you do is put it in the most cheap plastic cover making it a thick and cheap mess. You just trying to protect your ego get the f outta here.

1

u/untamedtoplay99 19d ago

I didn’t buy the 17 pro because I loved walking around with a traffic cone lmao

0

u/Delicious_Invite_127 19d ago

Bro chill out. It's a phone, not your manhood. It can take abuse alright. It is a daily use object

-12

u/redsterXVI 19d ago

I'm shocked that people buy phones that require a case, like mines have been fine without since forever. Also, why do people give so much of a fuck about a phone's design, if they put it into an ugly case immediately anyway?

9

u/Treewithatea 19d ago

Idk about your phone but my phones look flawless after 3 years using case and glass. I cant imagine an uncased phone looking flawless after 3 years, surely you have some minor scratches

2

u/TheRipper564 19d ago

Had mine for about 6 with no case and looks almost brand new besides the info sticker (Brain farting on the actual name) I guess it depends on the person and the things carried in pockets/fabric type of the pockets.

I do however leave mine laying around on flat desks or the dash of cars a lot maybe that's why to.

1

u/redsterXVI 19d ago

Tiny scratches that are only visible if you're really looking for them. But also, what's the problem with minor scratches?

1

u/HallucinateZ 19d ago

What phone do you have? That omission & minimizing makes me think you can edit out “minor scratches” with “damage” lol

1

u/Valerian_ 19d ago

I have a Galaxy Note 9 since 8 years, it was one of the flagship phones back then, it's still working fine, and I really had to look closely and reflect light on the surface to find like six barely visible micro-scratches.

I never used any phone case or screen protector.

The only issue I had happened this year, when somehow a side button fell off, and I could buy a replacement for cheap online.

4

u/trukkija 19d ago

You know there's an option to go with a less ugly case? Also, sure yours has been fine because you baby it but I'd bet money that the majority of people who own whichever model phone you have still use a case.

It's basically only those ugly ass rugged construction phones which don't get inherently designed for a case to be used.

1

u/movzx 19d ago

I mean, I don't even buy that his phone is flawless. You can baby it all you want, it's still going to pick up minor scuffs after 3 years. Your pocket isn't a clean environment.

It's just that he doesn't care about the damage.

1

u/Nekorokku 19d ago

I use a case because all phones nowadays are annoyingly fucking big yet my hands are small -> the phones simply slip out of my hand sometimes, especially if it’s not in a case. I use a case and screen protector to protect the phone and a pop socket to have a better grip.

1

u/Aggravating_Lab_7734 19d ago

Those who use cases don't give a fuck about design. Those who give a fuck about design don't use cases. Those are two entirely separate circles on a venn diagram.

0

u/Aggravating-Hair-534 19d ago

I keep mine in the case all the time, but if you think about it - what's the point of all those premium look and feel, if you constantly need to keep it in the armed case. I take it out sometime, it's pristine, and it's so fucking good without any of it. May be we should wear them without any protection until they get all dented and ugly, and then hide that ugliness with protection?

0

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 19d ago

I never used a case because I prefer the way phones look without them. I also never drop my phone though.

0

u/farva_06 19d ago

I like the aesthetic of the phone, and don't want to ruin it with a case. I get the good insurance, so it's fine.

0

u/Saymon_K_Luftwaffe 19d ago

There is nothing more depressing than using a cover and a film on a smartphone, if I have to use it, I don't even buy the device to start a conversation.

The SmartPhone is sold by Apple without a cover and film, exactly because that's how it should last and be resistant.

And that's why none of the new devices surpasses the iPhone 15 Pro and its titanium, I've dropped it even on the asphalt and nothing happened, since then, I've been avoiding updating until Apple returns to titanium.

-3

u/vinfinite 19d ago

I never use a screen protector or case cause it just makes the phone feel like shit. My buddy always calls me a psychopath for it. I mean if I break my screen it’s only a $29 same day fix so I don’t see what the big deal is. In the last 3 years I’ve broken my phone screen once.

3

u/Anxious-Track-754 19d ago

Psychopaths live among us for sure

44

u/Conchobar8 19d ago

The shop asked me what colour I wanted. I said whatever they had the most stock of, it’s going in a case anyway

21

u/Dapper-Antelope3363 19d ago

I have no idea what color my phone is, hasnt left the case in 2 years

6

u/uhohthrowawayyyyyy 19d ago

Take your phone of your case and clean it, that’s disgusting lol

7

u/Dapper-Antelope3363 19d ago

Nah if the front gets dirty i just lick it off

5

u/RegOrangePaperPlane 19d ago

Sand and grit alone from being in a case without cleaning it occasionally damage the phones as well.

2

u/Jesus__Skywalker 19d ago

only gonna damage the outside casing though. I had an S20 until early this year and the back casing had mostly disintegrated but the phone works great.

1

u/astro143 19d ago

I took mine out of the case a couple weeks ago, remembered that I liked the color I got, then put it right back in the case

13

u/KilllllerWhale 19d ago

Seriously. I put a dbrand case on my iPhone 14 Pro 4 years ago and the phone is still brand new, not a single scratch and I've dropped it more times than I can count.

0

u/JalapenoPopPoop 19d ago

My caseless phone I bought three years ago also looks brand new. It's not hard to just simply not drop things, you might have some sort of motor function disorder if you can't manage to hold basic objects without dropping them

3

u/Jesus__Skywalker 19d ago

Things can fall without being held. Things get knocked off of things. People have kids, people have pets. This is also the wildest humblebrag I have ever heard.

1

u/xtrawolf 19d ago

So no kids, no pets, no jogging, no being a woman/having small hands that modern phones aren't designed for?

2

u/TH0M4SS 19d ago

You mean you want a bunch of sand to make small speckle spots on the phone in the places the case and phone make contact...ask me how I know, Ive turned to no case psycho mode and am glad I did, its just life now

2

u/ThatEvilGuy 19d ago

That, or embrace wabi-sabi.

4

u/DaddaMongo 19d ago

just bought a new phone (not apple) and would you believe it, it came with a case, not bundled by the supplier but in the actual phone box from the manufacturer!  Some companies are actually learning!

2

u/Dry-Ad-8948 19d ago

I use small case to keep the metal nice.

But the only reason why I use a screen protector on iPhone 13+ is because I’ve a titanium pocket clip, and it will scratch if put in the same pocket. Similarly also for diamond eg. But if I did not have this money clip…

1

u/purple_sphinx 19d ago

Once I dropped my phone down several concrete flights of stairs. It had an extremely thick, unattractive case that saved it!

1

u/icantagree 19d ago

and the verizon wireless agent is at it again, shopping with my pockets and ensuring i protect this egg shell of a 1400$ phone.

1

u/MastodontFarmer 19d ago

If you buy the protector and case in the Apple store and have them installed by Apple staff, any damage to your iPhone before receiving it is covered by the liability insurance of the Apple store. At least in Europe.

1

u/Glittering_Alps_8901 19d ago

Sure, if you drop your phone, you should use a case. If you use it without a case, you shouldn’t drop it, and if you do you have to be okay with the chance of it cracking. That is NOT what is going on here at all.

The aluminum is so crazy soft that it’s getting dented and scuffed even with a case on. Some people use the phone without a case and DON’T drop it - they’re getting huge scratches and discoloration just from putting their phone down on a table, or having it slide a couple of inches. Unacceptable on a $1400 phone.

1

u/BloatDeathsDontCount 19d ago

I haven't used an iPhone without an Otterbox in over a decade. Crazy to think about all the phones my friends have gone through from dropping them, cracking the screen, and otherwise damaging them from use, and my phones look brand new on the day I retire them for an upgrade. As long as their quality stays top notch as it has, it's one of the few companies I will go out of my way to recommend to others.

1

u/SanktMarvin 19d ago

Thing is, I always have damage on the sides from dust and dirt that was trapped between case and phone anyway after a few years.

1

u/grallbring 19d ago

Unpopular opinion: You shouldn't need a third-party case to protect a phone getting damaged from normal, everyday use.

1

u/All_Usernames_Tooken 19d ago

This just in, any metal will show damage from regular use. Any plastic will scratch. Most anodized metal will have wear. Short of making a phone out of diamond, it will show wear and damage with normal use.

1

u/oguz0040 17d ago

it is not enough. i've been trying to scream louder than apple fanboy echo chamber for 2 years now, A CASE IS NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE THIS PHONE HOLD ITS STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. AN ALUMINUM PHONE DOESNT BREAK BECAUSE OF DAMAGE, IT BENDS!!!! IT BENDS AND CRACKS THE SCREEN FROM INSIDE. ALUMINUM. IS. THE. WORST. and anyone who thinks its okay is a stupid consumer

1

u/All_Usernames_Tooken 17d ago

I don’t know, never really had my phone glass crack, only when I put it through extreme conditions

1

u/oguz0040 16d ago

check my profile if you will

1

u/havnar- 19d ago

Screen protectors are way softer and shittier than the glass on modern iPhones. It just makes them worse with no benefit unless you opt for a privacy screen

1

u/Meh75 19d ago

That’s just not true at all. The point of the screen protector is to break instead of the actual screen. That’s not “shitty”, it’s by design.

And I much prefer paying 15$ for a screen protector that I can replace easily instead of 400$ to replace the actual screen.

Every single day I see people absolutely obliterate their iPhone screens. Protectors are the way to go.

1

u/BigWormsFather 19d ago

That changes the size of the phone. I don’t have a new phone but I haven’t used a case in a very long time and really wouldn’t want to now with how large phones have gotten.

2

u/jakfrist 19d ago

I’ve been using a minimalist case for a few years now.

The size difference is negligible, but it’s enough to prevent damage from minor to moderate dings and drops.

0

u/LucHighwalker 19d ago

Exactly. Especially with how thin phones have gotten, a good quality case doesn't even make it that unwieldy anymore. There is no excuse not to have a case.
