You could drop this thing down 50 feet of concrete stairs and it would be 95% fine.

We are blinded by nostalgia, all of these phones scratched just by looking at them wrong. Both outcomes result in a usable phone.

Agreed. They were light, plasticy, and their screens didn't respond to touch but had an air gap between the display and outer protective layer.

They scratched easily, but it didn't matter because it rarely affected functionality and there was virtually no resale market to worry about.

u/Jesus__Skywalker 19d ago

Yeah but you also didn't use them non stop all day long either.

u/RhetoricalOrator 19d ago

That's a really good point!

Plus, if you had a contract, you’d get a “free” one every two years, and you didn’t have to pay for the cell phone itself, in addition to your monthly bill, as long as it was covered under one of those promotions.

That's a good point. They weren't as significant of a financial decision as they are now. I remember when the price of the first iPhone was set, it seemed absolutely bonkers that there would/could ever be a market for a five-HUNDRED dollar phone. "Regular" phones weren't even half that when they were on contract.

God I hated that air gap lol! The one phone I had which was nice at first until it was absolute garbage was the LG Voyager. After a while the touch screen was just so unusable. I miss the charm and how exciting new tech was at the time, but I would not trade my current phone for any of them lol.

I had a Voyager too and can confirm it was dogshit. The selling point was the touchscreen but it still used a basic dumb-phone OS so there wasn't even anything cool you could use it for. I do still miss early Android phones with slide-out keyboards though

Are y'all out here reselling your phones? I'm always pretending I'm gonna resell my phone, treating it like a delicate princess, but I ain't never sold one; they all just become spicy pillows in shoeboxes in a closet somewhere in the many rooms of my giant mansion.

Same, except the back corner of my dresser. I've got a stack of them that include my iPhone 3G, a Samsung Galaxy Note4, and a Nokia Lumia 1520 Windows phone.

When I get a new one, I keep the old one that's barely functional in case my new phone breaks. It's never been necessary. I usually just fix my current phone.

You seem sensible. I like you.

Mine was scuffed to no end, but it worked. And that's exactly why I loved it.

u/KeesterFeester 19d ago

I can hear the creaking plastic lol

The hilarity is that the picture is a super scratched and worn phone. Our tastes have grown to where that shit would be a huge no-go.

u/TimelyToast 19d ago

Yeah, truth be told modern smartphones are a LOT more durable minus the display.

Many of these old phones would completely burst/rupture dropped from only a couple feet. The removable battery did not help and that would be the first thing to fly like shrapnel in a random direction.  Plus they also scratched easily.

Modern smartphones have some vulnerabilities but are a much better shape and more structurally sound than the rounded bricks many actually surviving falls from 10s of feet.

getting sand in the mechanism. now everytime you use it you get to feel these little grits

The poor stairs on the other hand....

1

u/OrokinLonewolf 19d ago

Had this same phone, can confirm

1

u/decadent-dragon 19d ago

Nah those slide outs were the worst. Over time sand/dirt/debris gets in there and messes with the way they open

I miss my old work Blackberry so much from the early 2000s, those things were tanks, like one of the few phones you could use to crush a Nokia brick of the day

1

u/L3m0n0p0ly 19d ago

Well, you'd have to find your battery and back cover from where they scattered off to, but yes.

u/Grindfather901 19d ago

Not that Samsung but i lost my Nokia (THE Nokia) off the top of a 150’ water tower. Found it in the grass later and it was working just as fine as ever.

1

u/Jesus__Skywalker 19d ago

The stairs wouldn't be

1

u/Aristo_Cat 19d ago

How could that be possible? I thought only titanium phones were durable?

1

u/Business_Signal2425 19d ago

It‘s a dated samsung, it would have stopped working just because…

1

u/LaceyVonTease 19d ago

I had a flip phone in the early 2000's that was missing a piece of the pull out antenna, missing face and side buttons, broken face screen and the battery was held on with packing tape. When I worked at a ranch as a teen a horse stepped on it. It still turns on and works today.

1

u/Zenos17 18d ago

And the 5% that’s not fine is the piece of concrete the phone landed on.

Pure sex.

I also have one of these in mint condition! It's survived and surpassed so many electronics.

These things scratched insanely easily

1

u/Babygeoffrey968 19d ago

i had that exact phone for a long time. still miss it at times

1

u/SpaceCaseSixtyTenV2 19d ago

I still remember the tactile feedback of sliding that thing open and closed. was my last phone before a smartphone

1

u/ihatepalmtrees 19d ago

Yeah. Just overlook how sucky the rest of it is

1

u/Xayahbetes 19d ago

Yes but the screen is also scratched. Yes it still works, but so does the phone in the post. The complaint remains the same--cosmetic damage

1

u/Frequent_Opportunist 19d ago

Yeah but the outer screen on this was plastic so just having it in your pocket with a key would fuck it up permanently.

1

u/Enki418 19d ago

This was my 1st cell phone.

1

u/ShepherdOfNone 19d ago

nah, I had one of these and it started getting hot in my pocket while I was driving to work. I threw it onto the passenger side floor when it started to burn me and it melted my rubber floor mat. I thought it was going to catch fire while I was in heavy traffic on the interstate.

1

u/Bwthhybl1987 19d ago

I dropped my Env3 through the top of the school bleachers the first day I got it and it was completely fine lol

1

u/BaerMinUhMuhm 19d ago

I still have mine in a drawer somewhere. I miss this phone

1

u/vpizdek13 18d ago

i have something more cursed than this somewhere (it’s pink too)

I wish these were available like flip phones are with Verizon. I’d switch to this in a heart beat & rock an iPad
