Everyone out here commenting about phone cases. How about we go back to plastic phones that could actually survive a drop and be fine? But nooooo that feels cheap people say.

I do not understand the need for a phone to "feel premium" and then need to to be put in a case when we already had phones that were nigh indestructible.

Edit: Guys smart phones used to have plastic bodies too. Its not just Nokias.

u/Adventurous-Bit-3829 19d ago

The irony is asking for premium material you'll only touch of first day and using $10 silicone case.

2

u/getinshape2022 19d ago edited 19d ago

My d!ck feels premium as well but I put it in a 1 dollar case before I use it

1

u/Apprehensive_Drama_2 19d ago

What?

3

u/ButterBeforeSunset 19d ago

1

u/Apprehensive_Drama_2 19d ago

I have no idea how that relates to my question šŸ˜‚

1

u/Blbe-Check-42069 19d ago

yeah we can see

1

u/Apprehensive_Drama_2 19d ago

Can you?

1

u/somehowintelligent 15d ago

As a bystander, yes we can

1

u/Used-Baby1199 19d ago

Never heard of a condom?

1

u/Adventurous-Bit-3829 19d ago

A dick case made of polymer

1

u/Micro-Naut 19d ago

Any more "whats" you're gonna be a light bulb

2

u/Apprehensive_Drama_2 19d ago

šŸ¤” Watts that supposed to mean

1

u/Adventurous-Bit-3829 19d ago

It's much more expensive than iPhone if this case broke.

2

u/Eldritch_Horns 19d ago

I always get cases like this. They look and feel really nice and aren't exorbitantly expensive.

The tactile feeling of the carved wood is really pleasant.

I still use that pixel 7 pro too. It still functions perfectly. I don't upgrade my phone till the buttons fall off šŸ˜…

1

u/dragonrite 19d ago

"Premoum material"

I have a roll of that premium in my kitchen drawer for heavens sake. It's fucking aluminum.

1

u/ThelVluffin 19d ago

Haven't put a case on my phones in over 10 years. I do not understand how people drop this shit so often.

1

u/Fit_Transition_824 19d ago

The iphone body material isnt premium. The premium part is the thinness of the phone. That way when you put on a case its the perfect thickness

1

u/Adventurous-Bit-3829 19d ago

So you want thin phone then make it THICC?

1

u/Fit_Transition_824 19d ago

No i want a phone that is the perfect thickness when i put whatever case i want on it

1

u/Bushidoflack_117 18d ago

Cars are 50 grand but I’ll still put PPL film on the front of it…

1

u/CloudDweller182 16d ago

I’d use without a case but honestly i hate how smooth the new phones are and therefore easy for them to slip out of your hand

0

u/Former_Mobile3101 19d ago

You don't take your phone out and clean it and the case?

2

u/Adventurous-Bit-3829 19d ago

So you only touch space grade Aluminium when you clean it? It's like having 500HP cars and only rev it in garage.

1

u/Used-Baby1199 19d ago

It’s more like having a 500hp car with a factory paint job and putting a vinyl wrap on it to protect the paint, but you also change the color and never see the factory paint. Then daily driving that car. Ā We have our phones everywhere and use them constantlyĀ

1

u/TraitorMacbeth 19d ago

Ok sure take it out to clean and…. Savor the aluminum? Then right back in the case it goes

0

u/Safe-Historian4028 19d ago

Why do you need to clean your phone?!Ā Ā

3

u/hideseek108 19d ago

because it gets nasty if you don'tĀ

It's also a fun time pass hobby to take care of your belongings

1

u/Safe-Historian4028 19d ago

My phones last me 10+ years. It is clean without the need to specifically clean it. I just don't put it in shit? It's either in my hand, pocket, mounted on a magnet in my car, or on a stand at my desk.

1

u/hideseek108 19d ago

I usually find a lot of dust inside the case whenever I open it, I don't think it's a matter of putting it in shit, dust always finds a way

there's no real "need" to clean it, as you can just keep the case on forever and the dust stays trapped insideĀ

1

u/Safe-Historian4028 19d ago

Just opened mine for the first time since I got the phone 4 years ago. Completely clean asides from a tiny bit of dust around the outside of the charging port. I'm pretty sure I caused more damage in wear and tear than has been saved in wiping that dust up, that I assume will be back by tomorrow. However I'll make an effort to check in another 4 years.Ā

1

u/hideseek108 19d ago

Then idk what I am doing wrong.

I usually find a lot of dust on the sides of the camera that is covered by the case. My phone is the OnePlus 12

1

u/Safe-Historian4028 19d ago

perhaps an ill fitting case.

1

u/GuacamoleFrejole 19d ago

Why would it get nasty? Where are you putting it?

1

u/Roo_farts 19d ago

Lint and dust collect in it? Oils from your hand and face get on it? Its set down on numerous surfaces and touched by your dirty hands all day. Why tf dont you clean your phone.

1

u/Former_Mobile3101 19d ago

I work in a kitchen and my phone has become a very useful tool. Needless to say it gets a bit gross from time to time.

1

u/Safe-Historian4028 19d ago

I can promise you I've never cleaned my phone, the screen doesn't pick up oil and the case is airtight, nothing gets stuck to it.

34

u/Tiyath 19d ago

Problem is that since the bezels are so thin it would barely make a difference. Phones used to be relatively bulky and distribute force better. But if you made that super thin casing out of plastic it might be even more prone to cracks and scratches

21

u/ConspicuousPineapple 19d ago

Yeah thin plastic would be much worse for durability. Maybe let's stop caring about scratches on everyday utilitarian devices?

4

u/Used-Baby1199 19d ago

Plastic is an insulator as well, and our phones are tasked with much higher performance than they used to be. Ā That computing performance creates heat. Ā  Aluminum is highly heat conductive, so even in a case, the heat is spread throughout the aluminum away from the source of heat. Ā  This makes our cases act as a. Heat sink, which I’m sure helps with performance as well. A plastic shell would keep the heat more localized which would allowing specific components to get hotter and hotter. Ā Ā

1

u/Big_Development3985 19d ago

Sure, but if we’re wrapping the aluminum in plastic anyway its not like that heat has an escape vector

3

u/fel0niousmonk 19d ago

It still radiates inside the plastic across a broader surface area. I think there are also likely to be plastics that are better at distributing heat.

2

u/Used-Baby1199 19d ago

Yes it spreads across the aluminum instead of being localized, even if it is trapped within the case. Ā And sure maybe some plastics could conduct heat better than others, but still not as well as aluminum. Ā Aluminum is recognized as a good heat conductor amongst other metals which conduct heat well. Ā It’s one of the reasons it’s more complicated to weld aluminum among other things like aluminum’s protective oxide layer which has a melting point 3x higher than the actual aluminum.Ā

1

u/Big_Development3985 19d ago

When I take apart electronics, like a gaming console for instance, there are generally thin layers of aluminum between the components and the plastic. Similarly, a CPU heatsink is just thin aluminum or copper fins. Wouldn’t it be better to use a similar process in cell phones, utilizing both the thermal properties of aluminum and the durability of plastic?

1

u/Used-Baby1199 19d ago

I mean they very well may, I’ve never opened an iPhone, but yeah, heat sinks would usually be copper, aluminum or silver because they have some of the highest thermal expansion rates of any metals. Ā  Generally if it’s a good conductor of electricity it’s a it is good at conducting heat.Ā

However they may sacrifice the plastics for space saving. Ā Ā

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

This. My phone is a tool not a fashion statement. As long as it works, I don't care what random scratches are on it. But I do use screen protectors, I can't handle a scratched screen. The body, don't care. Hell half the time I run caseless. With insurance of course.

1

u/Apexnanoman 19d ago

I don't give two shits about scratches. My otter box is to protect my phone from severe damage lol.Ā

But I'm hard on stuff so maybe I'm an edge case.Ā

The people that worry about trade in value etc baffle me. I actually just traded in a phone for the first time recently. Made the new one a little cheaper but eh.Ā

1

u/ConspicuousPineapple 19d ago

Companies like Google don't even factor in scratches for trade-in value so I care even less about all this.

1

u/Apexnanoman 19d ago

Yeah with me it's not even scratches. It's more "threw it from moving equipment and smacked it into a big metal thing."Ā

(Accidentally.....shits way to expensive to throw in a fit of rage.)

0

u/Tiyath 19d ago

Oh, I don't give a damn. I either buy a device I can afford to break or replace or I leave it be. Who wants to walk around eggshells for two years just so you can sell your $1000 phone for 400 instead of 300?

2

u/Used-Baby1199 19d ago

I’m not gentle with my phones. Ā I’m in the trades and I’m doing welding and machine tool classes. Ā My phones are subject to falling from ladders, dusty environments, high heat from the proximity to my welding, small metal shavings from grinding and drilling. Ā My iPhones last years. Ā I’m not an upgrade every year type of guy, my current phone is probably about 3 years old right now and still going strong. Ā Just need a case, and screen protector. Ā Which I don’t think is too much to ask. Ā

People forget how much more computing performance is packed into these compared to the old phones in the early 2000s.Ā

1

u/Blasphemiee 19d ago

Man I used to buy these cases for the first few years of iphone called Mophie.. they were manufactured near my home town too so a bonus… those things survived a deployment and a decade in the trades afterward. I would throw my iPhone 4 against a concrete wall like a baseball pitch. My brother actually dropped his whole loaded 240 right on top of it and .. nothing.

They don’t make shit like that anymore :/

1

u/Sharp_Economy1401 19d ago

Yeah, likewise. I have a pretty active job and sometimes end up fumbling my phone when moving around. I’ve dropped mine a bunch and am at 4 years or so.

I can’t imagine losing a second of peace of mind because a low profile highly complex device needs a $20 case. Who cares? People will literally waste more time repeatedly arguing the point over time than the time cost of the case

1

u/slimninj4 19d ago

Or hold on to it for 4-6-8 years.

1

u/Used-Baby1199 19d ago

Mine is 3 years old now, so I don’t see why another year will be a problemĀ

3

u/Comeondontosouthpark 19d ago

That’s exactly what I was thinking all this glass in a small plastic casing would be hell at first drop

1

u/Vennomite 19d ago

And if they could get away selling us plastic instead of aluminum at the same price, why sell is aluminum?

2

u/VegaDelalyre 19d ago

How many mm are we talking about?

1

u/Tiyath 19d ago

Dunno about the exact strenght but I'd be surprised if it exceeded 1mm

1

u/Havengul_Undying 19d ago

Less than 1mm feels like

2

u/wooden-fuk-boi 19d ago

Maybe im from an alternate timeline, but I remember early Ipods/phones having a clear gel coating

3

u/Indecisive-Gamer 19d ago

Yes our phones in 90s 2000s etc are looked scratched and messed up, but people just didn't care about it so much then. Now they cost 500-1000 we want them to stay nice because well they cost so damn much.

1

u/eagleal 19d ago

The previous phones survived because it was an engineering choice to male them break apart and reassemble, so as to dissipate impact energy.

The battery is usually the biggest weight even in modern phones. So by purposely making it break out would dissipate enough energy to save the screen.

24

u/Sensitive_Ad_5031 19d ago

I’m more concerned about that little scratch being called damage

3

u/SimilarTranslator264 19d ago

lol I bet that phone doesn’t work at all now.

3

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 19d ago

Using an iPhone gets significantly better when you realize how much abuse they can actually take. Aside from the screen obviously, but I don’t care about scratches and dings in it and I’ve used many iPhones until the wheels fell off. All my corners are kinda fucked up but the screen is fine so… the phone is good

2

u/thethrowaway19901999 19d ago

It is technically damage

4

u/JmmyTheHand 19d ago

Drop metal onto hard ground and it will scratch…

The market looked at the new metal and glass phones, said ā€˜Yummers’, and never looked at the plastic phones again.

2

u/Afrojones66 19d ago

They really should’ve stopped ā€œimprovingā€ after the Nokia.

2

u/KellerFF 19d ago

The aliens will find the Nokias when we are said and done.

And they will fuck around and still work.

2

u/Mushy_Man85 19d ago

I remember the Nokia phone I had. Literally dropped it and ran it over in the driveway. It was damaged but I could still call people on it. That’s design quality.

2

u/MysticMaven 19d ago

Maybe because some of us don’t want to fill landfills with plastic!!!! You should have stayed in school MaGAt

2

u/bigeyez 19d ago

Yeah because the cases you buy for your phones right now are totally different šŸ™„

And wtf does wanting a durable phone have to do with Maga? You sound dumb.

2

u/BrilliantThought1728 19d ago

It’s a Reddit thing

2

u/Smokin_belladonna 19d ago

remember when the battery cover would pop off when you dropped it to relieve the force of the drop?

2

u/Casulex 19d ago

Its marketing 101, people perceive something being more expensive if it has weightĀ

2

u/Expensive_Finger_973 19d ago

Because people love a good PR campaign that makes them feel like they are buying shit that rich people would buy.

2

u/lovable_cube 19d ago

Bc we can’t function as a society without compact computers and gps systems anymore. I can’t even clock into work without a smartphone that has location enabled. Since this is the place we’re at and a device we rely on for a crazy amount of things, we want it to be nice. Since I have a nice thing that allows me to access allllll of my information I obviously want to protect it from breaking.

People with no phone case probably bang randos with no condom then act shocked when someone winds up pregnant or with a sti.

2

u/Crishien 19d ago

People forget that plastic phones of the past looked shit in a few weeks after being scratched to oblivion. It's just that nobody care much back then. Won't fly these days when devices should look pristine for years. That's why glass and metal are the most durable option.

1

u/Electrical_Ad_5732 19d ago

I got myself Ulefone Armour 34 pro and I can literally throw it against a wall or do some other shit and the phone is just fine. I've even made demonstrations of that to other people (well, chipped the table in the pub one time when I smashed it screen down :D).

Downside is the phone is quite heavy (900 grams) but I don't really mind that, since I work out anyway.

1

u/Plus-Permission-3745 19d ago

plastic would scuff and scratch from everything you you did. and it doesn't absorb enough shock for the weight that phones are now and the type internals in phones.
Remember when phones got more advanced they used drop and the internals would bounce around and the phone was non functional. But there are still plastic cheaper phones if you wanted to go back. mostly google phones you could get for free from most carriers. they never break but they have only basic features

1

u/HellBlazer_NQ 19d ago

People knew what the phone was made of before spending $1400 on it.

Its not like people have been tricked into spending $1400 on a lower quality product. People are just paying stupid amounts of money because corporations, and the caner that is influencers, invented the idea of FOMO!

1

u/Otherwise-Tomato-788 19d ago

Aluminum is abundant, reduces heat fast and easy to manufacture

1

u/Lordofthereef 19d ago

It's all about heat dissipation and being water and dust proof. That plastic phone you remember had the computing power of your current toaster. The latest flagship has the computing power of the laptop you bought five years ago. If you want that computing power, you need to do something with the heat or else you are performance throttling within seconds of loading a webpage, thereby eliminating the point of having said performance at your fingertips.

I was jsut in AT&T the other day trading in some phones. They still do sell plastic flip phones and I think even some base model android. They never disappeared. Consumers just choose performance over out-of-the-box affordability 999/1000 times. Especially true when a relatively inexpensive case improves durability by a wide margin.

I loved my Nokia in high school. The thing was a tank. But so was my calculator lol. They're just completely different devices these days. The only real similarity is that they can make calls and texts.

1

u/seanbeedelicious 19d ago

Since there were mobile phones, there have been mobile phone cases

1

u/2M4D 19d ago

My father has an iPhone without case and drops is daily. Sure it’s not looking the best but it survives and works normally, just gotta change the screen protector sometimes.

iPhones are pretty resistant but obviously if you want to keep it in pristine condition, which is what people are expecting, you will want a case.

1

u/SippinOnHatorade 19d ago

Listen, not every plastic phone was built like a Nokia or GZone Boulder, I’ve had previous phones like the Razr literally explode from a drop (not fiery explosion, but just pieces flying outwards)

And those pieces of shit had very rudimentary hardware inside. Today’s phone chips literally power laptops (Mac Neo). Just use a case.

1

u/Used-Baby1199 19d ago

The aluminum may have other purposes. Ā As far as metal alloys go, its strong, being that its and aluminum/zinc alloys. Ā It has strength and is lightweight, and aluminum conducts heat much better than plastic, so the heat created during heavy performance tasks dissipates over the whole surface of the aluminum. Ā Even wrapped in an insulating case, the aluminum body spreads the heat away from the source acting as a heat sink.

The materials used my serve more purpose than you think. Any one who’s had some welding classes or a metallurgy class would be able to understand I’d think.

1

u/flapjackbandit00 19d ago

A plastic phone will get the exact same dent/scratch from a drop.

No one claims Nokia phones didn’t dent. They say they could be dropped and still work. You’re changing the goalpost.

1

u/subcow 19d ago

I would take a bulkier phone if it was fully serviceable. I want a shell I can replace easily, a removable battery, a headphone jack and an SD Card slot. They keep taking away features.

1

u/Koalazilla 19d ago

I miss Nokia Windows Phones made out of that polycarbonate magic plastic they used. That stuff was awesome and still felt premium and you could make so many fun colors with it…. I miss Windows Phones and BlackBerry now that I mention it. Back when the market actually had some competition.

1

u/TheRaccoonReport 19d ago

My blackberry pearl was indestructible.

1

u/Dangerous_Rest_8449 19d ago

i would want this simply for the weight reduction so it's not pulling my pants down. Give me an option without a camera while were at it.

1

u/Limp_Combination4361 19d ago

To be fair, there WERE phone cases for those phones back then too, they were usually leather cases with a plastic barrier for the keys and screen.

1

u/SlomoLowLow 19d ago

If I’m paying thousands of dollars for it, it needs to feel premium. Doesn’t matter if it’s a watch, shoes, car parts, clothes, PC stuff, phones, etc.

thousands of dollars = should feel substantial and high quality

1

u/dirtywhitevanz 19d ago

You saying this like we decide the phones material lmao

1

u/etxsalsax 19d ago

tbf this phone is also completely fine, its like the most minor cosmetic damage possible. If youre not going to use a case, this is inevitably going to happen to any phone.

1

u/Potential_Aioli_4611 19d ago

Sure but Nokia made the most damage resistant phones.

1

u/Devils_Advocate-69 19d ago

More plastic waste. Great idea

1

u/bigeyez 19d ago

Because the plastic and silicone cases we all use are so different right?

1

u/Redditer052 19d ago

Yeah ok we will go with what one guy on Reddit says not what the billions of dollars and thousands of engineers have decided on.

1

u/Arturopxedd 19d ago

And they would break in a week and have missing pieces such a better option must be newgen

1

u/Soft_Lunch_183 19d ago

Smartphones now are some of the most durable phones we have ever had, a chip on the frame doesn't mean its broken

But nooooo that feels cheap people say.

Nobody with half a brain is saying this. I was shocked to find out they're still making phones with glass backs. Glass... like the breakable screen, but on the back where they could choose a less brittle material.

1

u/jollygreengoblin2 18d ago

We peaked with the razr. Could drive over it with a car

1

u/michaelsoft__binbows 18d ago

Lol while we're at it gimme that cover that pops off so i can swap in a fresh battery

1

u/mystical__sapphire 17d ago

Waste is the reason. Apple doesn't use plastic because plastic is not as recyclable as it seems, which they learned with the beautiful iMac G3 and iBook, which created a huge pollution problem, while metal cases can absolutely be recycled if taken apart properly.

1

u/TitaniumKneecap 16d ago

I loved my nexus with the plastic body and removable back. Same with my galaxy S5

1

u/VoidCL 13d ago

We should get a nokia phone and buy a "premium" alumunium case instead.

1

u/Swayday117 19d ago

Because apple said its premium and I’ll pay premium prices for apple phones that don’t change at all from year to year. Except one more camera now my I phone 58 has 67 cameras smh

1

u/Apexnanoman 19d ago

But the processor also benches better! Your nervous system might not be able to tell but the benchmarking system knows it's Uber fast!Ā

0

u/ToiletTime4TinyTown 19d ago

Maybe because those old phones did 3 things: make phone calls, play snake, and always work after being broken into pieces. We don’t use phones as phones as much as portable computers so if you can find a way to make a Nokia brick able to scroll social media, pay your electric bill and check your email you might be on to something.

0

u/bigeyez 19d ago

Uh no. My OG Galaxy S was all plastic. Didn't need a case. It wasn't for several gens that samsung copied Apples all metal and glass chassis.

1

u/ToiletTime4TinyTown 19d ago

The glass screen was plastic?

1

u/bigeyez 19d ago

Im obviously talking about the chassis dont be obtuse.

0

u/ToiletTime4TinyTown 19d ago

Being obtuse is suggesting any smartphone with a glass screen ā€œcan survive a dropā€

0

u/PieOld7867 19d ago

Not everybody has a desire for aesthetics in their life and that’s fine, but stop speaking for others w your disgusting preferences. If you want a plastic phone go get one. And it’s always easier to ruin a beautiful phone with a plastic case than the other way around, in fact the other way around you’re shit outta luck. So next time before you open your mouth take a second to think
