Spends $1299 on a phone but doesn’t bother to buy a case, even a cheap one.

On flip side, spend $1299 on a sleek design phone, have to put it in a bulky case worth <$20 because they cannot be bothered to make phones durable anymore

The casing isn't the expensive part of the phone. The screen and internals are. Hell, even the expensive parts don't justify the crazy price. Still, if they built the phone to survive drop tests the cost would go up significantly.

The tires aren’t the most expensive part of your vehicle but we still expect them to work well.

Good analogy, but not how you think. They are extremely expensive when you get good ones. A much, much higher percentage of the total vehicle cost than the housing of an iPhone is to the total iPhone cost. If the housing of an iPhone carried the same percentage cost of the phone, you would be paying much more, as I said. At this point, it's accepted that the majority of people will purchase a case for a phone. If it became common practice for everyone to change their tires immediately after purchase, you would see even cheaper tires being put on initially than currently are.

And OPs phone is destroyed and doesn't work anymore?

The phone is durable - it fell and all it got was a scratch.

I’m buying a nice new phone because it has features I like. I’m not buying it because it’s pretty. My $10 case looks just fine.

Unless they start making phones made of tungsten, metal will always act like metal when it drops to the ground.

So maybe just maybe they should not be made of metal at all?

Don't know if you are old enough to remember, but phones used to be made of plastic and were hell of a lot more durable than todays aluminium phones

No one needed cases back then

They'd just look cheap as hell and eventually overheating issues would arrive because these phones generate a hella lot more heat than the older plastic phones. There's really no solution other than getting a case. There's no reason not to anyway, they're cheap and preserves your phone and its value.

How are people supposed to see that they can afford to buy the new iPhone 18 Pro if they hide it in a phonecase?

People put cases on $200 phones too.

Hope you see the irony

Having to buy a case for a phone is so dumb
