I was born in the 80s, I miss my plastic phones. You could toss a Nokia against a wall and it would be just fine. Hell I ran one over with my car one time and it was fine.

7

u/InfiniteBoops 19d ago

I accidentally left a flip phone on the bed rail on the work truck. As we went around a corner leaving a job I saw it in my peripheral vision slide off, bounce off the road and into the foliage. Found the phone immediately but it took us like 10min to find the battery and battery cover, put it all back together, worked fine for years 😂

No, the car got totalled when it flew into the engine block and atomized it

3

u/barrorg 19d ago

Dropped off a third story balcony and put it through multiple wash/dry cycle. Came out fine every time.

3

u/vikingbeard23 19d ago

Left mine in a snowy quarry when it fell out my pocket while mountain biking. Worked like nothing happened when I found it 3 days later.

Managed to put a real deep scratch in my old Nokia when it was run over with an armored car. They really don't make em like they used to

1

u/twiskt 19d ago

Firm believer that those old Nokia phones would survive the heat death of the universe.

2

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Probably what started the big bang. The first Nokia to explode made the universe. Hell, if people can believe in the flat earth, that's not much of a stretch hah

1

u/SquishyCoffee6640 19d ago

You could entomb that shit and find it 100 years later with a little battery left and I'm working condition

1

u/Ok-Thanks4321 19d ago

iPhone 5c RIP

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Looks like you can pick one up for $40 😂

1

u/Ok-Thanks4321 19d ago

An un-updateable brick that takes horrible photos? I’m good

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Seen people waste $40 in dumber ways.

1

u/scuac 19d ago

Careful, that’s one way to damage your wall.

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Probably bring the whole house down.

1

u/Muzethefuze 19d ago

How much did you pay to replace the car after running over a Nokia ??

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

😂 solid point.

1

u/panana25 19d ago

Anyone tell you that you have to buy smartphones?

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Yes, I did.

1

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut 19d ago

Even back in the 2000s, they made glass that doesn't break, too.

I had a Nokia windows phone.. fell down 6 stairs.. at the bottom, the phone gets thrown against the tile floor as I brace myself.

The screen.. fucking... BENT and the phone kept working just fine.

IPhones break easy.... by design.

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Bend-gate. Oh, but they will sell you apple care.

1

u/ConditionOk3649 19d ago

I also ran over my Nokia with my car after dropping it in the snow at a car wash. Realized and went back, picked up the pieces, dried them off and snapped it back together. I did have to hold it closed with a rubber band after that for a while but it was nearly good as new!

1

u/Kyrie_Blue 19d ago

The Nokia would be fine, but not the wall

1

u/Fit_Transition_824 19d ago

I throw my iphone 16 pro across the room when i go to bed and all i have on it is a 5$ silicone case. Been doing it 2 years and it still has not broken

1

u/PieOld7867 19d ago

There’s cases to fit your weird needs

1

u/Saint-Sauveur 19d ago

I threw many blackberry, iPhones and other older phones.

I had a small raging problem when drunk and with heartbreak when I was a younger man. Anyways.. iPhones are surprisingly strong. Only ever owned a iPhone SE and iPhone 12

0

u/Smiadpades 19d ago

Samsung used to and they shattered cause of how thin the plastic was.

17

u/Frosty1397 19d ago

They wouldn't be able to charge $1k for a phone then, duh

this. phone accessory business is huge and profitable.

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Apple is charging $130 for their Duo case. And the apple fans will eat it up and say thank you. Probably costs apple sub $10 to manufacture and ship.

1

u/ChillN808 19d ago

I just wish someone besides Apple would make cases and earbuds that work with iPhones. That could be a big industry.

1

u/Known_Ear_6012 19d ago

Sad. Apple’s Chinese competitors Huawei and Xiaomi sell theirs with all the accessories, including a good case.

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Xiaomi's new phone is better than apples new 18. It's got a display in the camera island. Their software is getting close to useable. Their are rumors of a global launch, but we will see.

1

u/Known_Ear_6012 19d ago

I don’t think it’s quite there yet but almost. I haven’t used it myself but the few reviews I’ve seen said it was really good but not as good as Apple.

2

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Software wise, apple is better. But the hardware is better on the xiaomi.

1

u/Micro-Naut 19d ago

Not for long. I've been with Apple 40 years. They're software is going downhill fast because of AI. Granted I'm talking about the desktop and their phone really is the best out there. But they're new business model of profit over everything else will backfire sooner or later

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Like I said before, it's all been downhill since Jobs died.

1

u/Capable-Regular9791 19d ago

Durable phone cases and screen protectors can cost $100+ easily

1

u/Micro-Naut 19d ago

does Apple cell phone cases?

Edit: Yes,. Yes they do.

0

u/IcyInvestigator6138 19d ago

Which would be 79,95 in Apple’s case.

2

u/Sad_in_VA 19d ago

Why not??? They will charge whatever the market supports, regardless of materials.

1

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

Yea $130 for apples Duo case. Shits wild. I wouldn't buy that on principle, not supporting that. The again I've not supported apple got quite a while. I swapped to the s21u, then 22u, then fold 4,5,6, and now 8.

But of course everyone's acting like apple reinvented the fold.... It's a fold 8 with iOS, that's it. Also, Samsung was first yet people still say Samsung copied apple. The Duo subreddit is wild.

1

u/Background-Spot-5068 19d ago

Yes they would. What are people going to do, jump over to android because of the case material? Once people are entrenched in Apple, they can be sold a box full of dog crap and they’d still buy it

2

u/OfcWaffle 19d ago

$130 for the Duo case. And people will buy it and thank apple for stealing their money.

1

u/Apexnanoman 19d ago

Does Apple still have a phone you can get for $1000?

1

u/Historical_Royal_187 19d ago

Aluminium prices are arent that much more expensive than ABS, especially once you consider ABS is 89% as dense as Ally. Maybe a dollar difference per phone at most optimistic.

14

u/rehabkickrocks 19d ago

Thin plastic will still break and it won’t dissipate heat as well either. Think about how thin bezels are now.

6

u/SEmpls 19d ago

My blackberry Z10 didn't need a case it had a thick grippy exterior like a case would have.

1

u/VibraniumRhino 19d ago

I had a Q5
. I miss it. Z10 was also beautiful and I almost got that when I was buying. Only reason I ever switched was because RIM fell behind as a company and weren’t able to run a bunch of common/popular apps. But I loved that phone.

2

u/Stellen999 19d ago

RIM also thought that touchscreens were just a fad. They actually had models with a mechanical clickable screen. Completely off the mark there.

6

u/Ok-Chemistry7222 19d ago

Makes me miss my Nexus 5. Best phone ever. It was so light and the back was like a tough rubber material. I never needed a case for it.

1

u/TBurkeulosis 19d ago

Was that the one that was also a walkie talkie or something? My parents had those they were awesome lol

4

u/fxcoin9 19d ago

whatever it is made, the exterior material will get damaged during daily use.

The best way is making it replaceable, i.e. a plastic case.

1

u/Massive-Rain-6938 18d ago

Realistically this is the answer. Phones are being sold as a single piece with no replaceable parts, so there will always be a market for replaceable plastic shells for them.

2

u/Semour9 19d ago

Because they would probably do some bullshit like make a special design so only their apple designed cases would fit to milk people for more money

2

u/radedward76 19d ago

but...but... plastic don't look premium. that's what apple told me /s

2

u/Normal_Ad_1280 19d ago

Not everybody. I dont want no case ffs. You can buy the case yourself if you want.

1

u/[deleted] 19d ago

[deleted]

2

u/Normal_Ad_1280 19d ago

I have maybe used a case for 2 days, i just like the feel and i dont care if the phone gets beaten up. Never cracked the screen even tho the phone been flying.

4

u/Muhahahahaz 19d ago edited 19d ago

The Pros are built for raw performance. Aluminum dissipates heat way better, and allows the phone to sustain peak computing performance for an extended period of time without overheating
 plastic would be terrible.

These are not freaking 90s Nokia phones that can only make phone calls
It’s a high-performance computer in your pocket, that occasionally makes phone calls as a bonus

1

u/sick_of-it-all 18d ago

But I buy the aluminum phone, then wrap it in plastic anyway. You telling me Apple's engineers are stumped on how to build a phone that already does that out of the box?

1

u/Muhahahahaz 18d ago

Well that’s your choice, but you’re actually killing the cooling performance. The phone itself is what they design for.

Personally, I don’t use a case đŸ€·

1

u/DistinctJackfruit643 19d ago

1

u/NoLaundryIncluded 19d ago

How are they gonna sell you another phone if this one lasts as long as the 3310?

1

u/Apexnanoman 19d ago

Because then it doesn't look as shiny. You buy apple because shiny and style.

Doesn't matter if nobody can see the shiny etc inside the case. In the store? Style is what moves Apple product.

1

u/Outside_Orchid_1576 19d ago

That can be worked around. Sell designer shells/cases to go over the rubberized plastic body. Accessories would still be there.

1

u/Icy-Cherry-6445 19d ago

Chinese phone did that. With screen protector too.

1

u/Dravez23 19d ago

Antenna?

1

u/Outside_Orchid_1576 19d ago

Not a problem. Probably easier to deal with on plastic/rubber

1

u/No_Double7836 19d ago

Can't charge 2000 dollars as easily for a rubber phone

1

u/ClawsomO 19d ago edited 19d ago

Because phones have become a status symbol (thanks to influencers and social media). And regarded influencers think "heavy and unwieldy means premium!"

And everyone just....agrees.

My Pixel 5 was the best phone I have ever owned! Affordable, light, capable, reliable, ergonomic, made of bioplastic that is STILL holding up.

But no...."it doesn't feel like I spent a lot of money on it and it doesn't look like jewelry!! I need people to judge me based on how expensive looking my phone is!!!!"

1

u/Melodic-Comb9076 19d ago

hey
..were you that guy who was looking around at airports in the early 80s and wondered
.WTF???

why aren’t there wheels on everyone’s luggage?

1

u/DaimonHans 19d ago

That's the joke. Engineered to be 6mm thin. Adds a 3mm case. đŸ€Ł

1

u/Non_Alc0holic 19d ago

Phone break, company get money. Easy

1

u/jakob767 19d ago

I once bought a OnePlus which came with a plastic cover for the phone.

1

u/ninjad912 19d ago

Plastic and silicon cases are designed to take the damage for the phone. They disperse the force and break themselves over time(similar to a bullet proof vest). Metal is more consistent and lasts longer

1

u/roerd 19d ago

Plenty of phone models with plastic backs do exist. Both my previous (S21 FE) and my current phone (Pixel 10a) have plastic backs, and I'm perfectly happy with that.

1

u/various_convo7 19d ago

from an engineering aspect, a plastic and silicon case doesnt dissipate heat as well. older dumb phone didnt have nearly as much going on with them as they do now including all the tech needed to run the screens and the processing power.

manufacturers can go back to plastic candybar phones but the question is: can the population handle not being glued to their phone and only use it for basic text and phonecalls?

1

u/Calm-Armadillo4988 19d ago

The outer layers of my phone cases always end up broken. I don't care because it's a case, but I expect a plastic phone would also break.

1

u/Fit_Transition_824 19d ago

Because even if they design a protective casing into the phone, people will still put a case on it. Phones are too thin to hold without the case. But are have perfect dimensions once you put one on. It gives the user more choice and individuality.

1

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 19d ago

I mean those cases are designed to just take the brunt, but they don’t exactly take it any better than the phone itself. Old phones were plastic and they would get scratched to bits, if an iPhone was plastic OP would still have their problem

1

u/LastSaneHuman 19d ago

My guess is the plastic would have to tolerate high heat but I could be wrong. These phones now get much much hotter than any old phone could ever.

1

u/IceNein 19d ago

Good question, but it’s honestly better to just get a case that you replace every couple of years. Plastic degrades over time.

1

u/sceadwian 19d ago

Cell phone makers have been fucking off for a good decade now.

1

u/ISayBeef 19d ago

Absolutely not I do not want any plastic on my phone period

1

u/Last-Environment-638 18d ago

Easy, what is the value or plastic as a construction material in comparison to aluminium or silicon? What part does that answer play into costs?

1

u/organicgolden 19d ago

People want the phone made of “premium materials.” Samsung has used plastic for its FE and more budget phones, but you can’t put a plastic phone up against a metal and glass one in the market

0

u/Outside_Orchid_1576 19d ago

Yes you can. Several companies figured it out. It’s about the texture and weight. Make the internal frame aluminum. External case, rubberized plastic. Feels premium. Good grip for those that like it without a case and just ugly enough, many will put a case on it to cover it up.

1

u/organicgolden 19d ago

It’s about marketing. You can have the greatest material ever, but if it’s called “premium rubberized plastic,” the consumers say “no thanks I’d like the premium metal one!” Plastic phones sell, just not in the higher market that Apple participates in

1

u/Particular-Bike-9275 19d ago edited 19d ago

What? Who wants a plastic, silicone phone? How is that better? An iPhone with aluminum is 30x stronger than abs polycarbonate plastic. You guys are crazy.

3

u/Known_Ear_6012 19d ago

Nokia Brick. đŸ’Ș

2

u/Sensitive-Fix5958 19d ago

You sir, have never used Nokia it seems. Those could have been used as a murder weapons. I still have all my phones. Their build quality is insane

0

u/[deleted] 19d ago

[deleted]

0

u/Particular-Bike-9275 19d ago

That’s what a case is for.

0

u/[deleted] 19d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Particular-Bike-9275 19d ago

That’s not the point. Abandon the car analogy. The phone in your pocket isn’t a car. A bumper is specifically designed to deform and absorb impact while protecting a separate structural chassis. The iPhone’s enclosure is itself part of the structure. Aluminum gives it rigidity, dimensional stability, heat conduction and a premium thin construction that silicone or typical plastics don’t provide. A case can then add the impact absorption you’re talking about.

1

u/rjbell123 19d ago

Way worse heat dissipation and more like to break and hit internals just put on a case

0

u/Outside_Orchid_1576 19d ago

Nokia brick disagrees. So does nexus 5.

1

u/Soulman682 19d ago

Do you not remember the time Apple actually did just that? Or are you too young. They were breaking left and right unless you had a case or were super careful. Those only lasted a year before they went back to metal.

Common sense could have prevented this post.

4

u/[deleted] 19d ago

[deleted]

3

u/Soulman682 19d ago

Remember the Nokias that you can throw at someone and basically kill them đŸ€Ł

1

u/Longjumping-Sand7991 19d ago

Heat every plastic smart phone overheats badly aluminum helps with the heat made by modern smart phones

0

u/Outside_Orchid_1576 19d ago

Aluminum frame/plastic case.

1

u/Longjumping-Sand7991 18d ago

The modern motos are that way and those are the phones that overheat in like 80*f

1

u/Mike0621 19d ago

plastic breaks. when my plastic case breaks I can just buy a new case. if my phone is the plastic case that's way more expensive to replace. also, cases give you more ways to express yourself through your phone as there is way more variety since they're way cheaper to make a million variations of

0

u/pcmraaaaace 19d ago

I'm a fan of metal phones. Less glass is always a win.

0

u/GurEmergency9310 19d ago

Phones were made of plastic and most would shatter when they were dropped, only Nokia learned how to make their plastic as strong as steel.

0

u/don2171 19d ago

Because people would cry about the material or the added thickness ignoring that's how it will be anyway

0

u/GhostMcFunky 19d ago

“Like” what? Finish your sentence. You can’t be leaving us on a cliff hanger like that.

0

u/Glum-Long-1637 19d ago

The inside of your plastic iPhone would heat up and destroy the internal components pretty quickly
