When the wheel of your Bugatti scratches on the sidewalk, are you thinking that at this price it should be sidewalk-proof?
Seriously, it’s aluminium, whatever the price it has strengths and weaknesses… if it hits something, it scratches.

Wheels are light because it's better for performance. Aluminum is a light material.

I don't think aluminum is making the iPhone any faster.

Aluminum has better heat conduction than steel, especially stainless steel, and is far better than plastic. When running high- demands applications heat is often the limiting factor for mobile phones.
Potentially, aluminum IS making the phone faster by allowing it to dissipate heat faster.

The primary benefit of using aluminum (other than substantially reduced cost) is the superior thermal conductivity it offers compared to titanium, for example.

Considering the finite space and the amount of engineering that goes into packaging modern smartphone internals, having a big 'ole chunk of aluminum to serve as a heatsink makes the job of dissipating heat away from the important computer-y bits a little easier.

In theory this should offer more thermal headroom for better performance over periods of sustained usage, although the impact on actual peak performance is likely quite negligible.

Tell us what the most common heat sinking material is in consumer electronics
