Feels good man In the Netherlands, students live rent-free in a nursing home — they just have to spend 30 hours a month having tea with the residents

I live in the Netherlands and have never heard of this...

It’s a common Reddit thing.
There may be one Nursing Home in the Netherlands that has a a unique in house program of some kind.
This is then presented as if it is a universal national institution throughout the nation.56

It literally states "a nursing home" in the title and makes no claim or normality.

It's probably something like social work majors too.
I'd have enjoyed it. Love old people and their lack of filters.

I found this but I am not sure how real it is: https://www.studiekeuzelab.nl/kies/bente-helpt-in-zorgcentrum
Edit: It's project "De Woonstudent" with Humanitas Deventer.

There was one in Hilversum doing this. It was cheap but not free. One of my students took a room there but it turned out the home was bring closed so the organisation said they'd find other tasks for her to cover the lower rent. Turned out that a lot of that was doing stuff with a church they were affiliated with, which was not what she had signed up for.
I'm aware of students living in a nursing home in Haarlem as well. The home is being closed and they are basically similar to antikraakers, but in this case more keeping the building occupied while the residents are slowly moved out.

Humanitas Retirement home in Deventer Netherlands. Apparently. Please don't shoot the messenger. I'm just relaying what I found.

I mean it's one nursing home. Are you well versed on the policies of each nursing home in your country?

u/CalligrapherFun7140 1d ago
Wel no ofcourse not but the post presents it like its a comon thing

u/mammalmaker 1d ago
How does the post present it like it's a common thing? It says "a nursing home" in the title, not "nursing homes"

u/CalligrapherFun7140 1d ago
Maybe i just interpreted it that way... you are right that it does not say this.

Couldn't do this in the states. People would be jacking old people's meds

I'm trying to imagine the U.S. kids from Reddit who spend a few hours reading and contributing to all the Boomers Suck! posts then going to have tea with those boomers.

Apperantly, there is a nursing home in Deventer that has been doing this since 2012
There are just 5 students living there and they must spend a minimum of 30 hours per month engaging with the elderly.

Why don’t they tell you any details? Great idea, but which town? Which nursing home? Has this model really been successful? Who on earth can afford to pay for all these students to live for FREE in the facility?? Who pays for all their expenses, utilities food, taxes, liability insurance, etc…?!

Rent free does not mean paying insurances, food, taxes lmao. Where are you getting that

I was just wondering. Someone else sent a link so that explains it better

I like tea. But I’m at the other end of the table. Do I have to suffer the students?

Some student is gonna read this and think: "Wow! The netherlands is a great place to study! I'll go there!" Then they come here to find, this is not a common thing.

I'd honestly rather work a part time job. 30hours is a lot especially while still "going to school/ uni".

I'll have to visit my mother in her home tomorrow. There is a certain smell... No, I am glad my student days are long gone this time.

Dutch guy here. Never heard of this. If this was a common thing, every single student would have done this and we wouldn't have the housing crisis

This seems like a genuine good idea. Free might be a stretch but I bet they could do something for like reduced rates etc. Shared housing opportunity like this are already going to be cheaper.

Wait till their third world immigrant population explodes. They’ll use their social liberalism to destroy their social services.

What I know about the Netherlands is that crappy integration experiment where students where forced to live in the same dorm with asylum seekers and they were scared of staying in public areas or being alone in corridors; especially women. The dutch government dismissed their concern and still hasn't moved the immigrants from the dorm.
