I can see this being a reaction to feeling seen amd understood by someone. Realising the thought and effort was made in knowing what would make him happy and going to the effort of getting it especially when it's not something easy to just grab off the shelf at a convenience store.

I don't think anyone has ever got me a gift I really wanted or liked except when I've told them exactly what to get.

Yeah, it seems unfortunately rare to be gifted with something one actually wants. When I worked at a retail store when I was younger, I overheard so many customers saying “Ooooo, I really like that. I’ll get that for so and so” or “Wow, I love this color. I’ll get this for (whoever)”…

Like wth? It’s not about you. Get something you think they would like, in a color they like, even if you personally hate it. I don’t get it.
