i'd take not being married over marriage and a 5090
388
u/TinyMouseParade 1d ago
You just have to pick the right woman. Pick the right one and she buys you the 5090 as a thank you for being so good to her. Pretty simple math. I didn't buy my husband a 5090, I gave him the down payment for the house we just bought so. I think he'd pretty happy he picked the right woman too.

The catalyst is pristine love. Find your kindred spirit… that’s priceless, unquantifiable. Crying over material man made items for mere commemoration can be great showmanship;)

People acting like he's happier about the GPU than his wedding lol.
It's probably an overload of emotions. Not only is he getting married to the woman he loves, but she loves him so much and knows him so well that she got him the perfect gift FOR HIM.
That's super sweet and special, she knew exactly what to get to make him so happy. We should all (men and women) be so lucky.
This also must be a cultural thing, because I don't think I've ever been to a wedding where the happy couple exchanged gifts at the wedding or reception (except rings of course).

I cried when my wife gave me a PS5 for Christmas. I'm a PC gamer and have only touched it twice.
36
u/burner4lyf25 1d ago
I got one for my 30th last year.
As soon as I tore back the paper I just exclaimed "fuck off", put it down and went for a walk.
(fuck off is used in Britain when overwhelmed - you'd say it if your team scored a crazy unexpected goal or if you saw someone do a wild driving manoeuvre or something. Doesn't literally mean fuck you)
When I told my mate the next day, he just said "fuckin hell mate if my Mrs got me that I'd be pissed off cos wouldn't know what else to do"
We're (men) an odd bunch - but we appreciate our other halves and love this stuff, just don't know what to do with ourselves sometimes

Same mate. It's not really the gaming that matters for me, it's the thought. Growing up, we grew up quite poor so I really valued the few gaming consoles I owned. I'm fairly accomplished now and only get time to play a few hours a week so even if I can't enjoy the PS5 to the fullest, I do appreciate my wife trying to make me happy.

My ps4 broke in January 2025 whilst looking after my brothers XL bullies that were abandoned by police when he was sectioned This was almost immediately after the ban.
Trying to get the XLs sorted and rehomed, get him sorted and support him whilst he's spewing nonsensical vitriol at me every time we speak, get his belongings and house sorted whilst having 3 dogs of my own, my ow relationship and demons to be dealing with etc - ps4 total corruption was just the icing on the cake.
She saved all year then took out finance to get it for me in october. Was totally and completely unexpected - its the nicest, most thoughtful, inconvenient for them thing anyone has ever done for me. Didn't know how to articulate how I felt.
To the point I just popped
"fuck offfff, cya"
Had to take myself off for a cry round the corner hahaha.

This is an older clip from about 1 year ago when the price was around 3,5k for the Astral, but still, as China has massive tariffs, it would be closer to 6k then.
Btw. Here in Germany the same card is around 7k atm and the Matrix is the most expensive at 9k.

u/Low-Lingonberry7185 1d ago

It's banned to export to China so can't buy it from official channel anyway, would need to pay a lot but not due to tariff. Also recent news is that nvidia stopped production, so the price skyrockets.

u/Ok-Temporary-8243 1d ago
It's $12k usd. The average salary in China is like 15k. So they basically spent an average person's annual salary on the gift
23
u/failedopportunities 1d ago
What!!!! $12,000!!! Holy hell… I’m not a techy person (obviously) but I think this means it’s time for data center insurrections!! Ya know, just to liberate a few things. Here I’ve been thinking the reason the main personal being armed security at those things were just because people do not like them in their neighborhoods… Guess that just shows how ignorant I am..

There are also import restrictions, it was probably very hard to find.
3
u/Ok-Temporary-8243 1d ago
That too. Though you're still technically allowed to import for consumer use. It's a loophole that the US is now trying to close
14
u/honorable_raegdan 1d ago
It’s also prohibited being sold in China. So I’m sure it costs even more being contraband.
→ More replies (5)14
u/Ok-Temporary-8243 1d ago
You can't buy it from a direct channel. But there's nothing stopping an import shop from getting someone to buy one abroad and bringing it back into the city. It's actually a big loophole that the US is trying to close since you have Chinese "tourists" trying to leave the country with suitcase fulls of high end cards

u/Not_a_real_ghost 1d ago
the GPU weren't "meant" to be that expensive so people could afford it. Sure this is top of the line consumer stuff. The GPU used to cost like 1/5 of a PC's build cost but not anymore because shift in market demand and ai stuff

u/RhodesArk 20h ago
Chips this high end in China are incredibly rare on the consumer market. Even if you can afford the domestic price, it's very inflated on the secondary market.
29
u/GenericFatGuy 1d ago
Pretty much. The 5090 is the most powerful and expensive consumer grade graphics card on the market. Nvidia recently stopped selling them as well, with nothing more powerful to replace them. So there's a good chance these things will be in "could use that money for a mortgage down payment" territory soon.
Unless you're filthy stinking rich, you don't buy that as a gift unless you really love someone.
9
u/Bodod_Begag 23h ago
Aren't they just going to come out with a new model eventually? Like I get that this one is the most powerful but it feels like most of the price is "I want this now" instead of it actually being worth that much
11
u/GenericFatGuy 23h ago
Hard to say at this point. It used to be the Nvidia would come out with a new series almost every year, but they're making so much money now from AI that people are suspecting they might just get out of the consumer GPU market altogether. This might be the best consumer grade card on the market for a long time. Even if they do make more powerful cards, this thing will future proof you for years.
→ More replies (5)10
u/Own_Director_4442 23h ago
No the consumer market is all but dead due to all the money they're making from AI
4
u/Spirited-Lifeguard55 22h ago
They changed all their factories from making consumer models to datacenter models, it’s because they make more profit when they sell chips to AI datacenters.
3
u/Crismus 21h ago
When the crash from the artificial funding and collusion happens, consumers won't be able to take the surplus cards because server cards don't just fit in regular PC's.
The crash will be a lot worse than the 2003 internet bubble.

Not only that, imagine you marry to a women you love, and she gifted you a gift that was one of your dream item. It could be a car, a toy, a book, or anything, but it means she knows and understands you enough to know what is your favourite.
Not that many women can do that for their husband, it will be the husband doing the gifting instead, or else get nagged to death.

He was moved because it was a special day and the gift made him feel seen and cared for. It wasn't just some random present, but something very personal that he'd wanted for a long time. If they'd given him twice as much money as the gift was worth, he probably wouldn't have been nearly as moved. At least, that's how I would feel about it.

GPU prices have jumped significantly, pricing out a lot of people. Not only that, new games/programs are requiring more and more computing power, almost have to follow the trend of new gpus.
It's been some years since following the "scene" but that gpu is like 3,4 maybe $5,000

Alot of people dont understand that guys usually receive gifts they dont actually like or want but we appear as super happy as we dont usually get gifts.
Receiving something so top tier, hard to to get, expensive and you would only dare dream of from your life long partner on the day of the wedding ceremony is so so emotional.
Not only affirms that you have made the right choice in choosing a life partner but u would vow to treat her like the queen she is as she is worth it.
