Pretty much. The 5090 is the most powerful and expensive consumer grade graphics card on the market. Nvidia recently stopped selling them as well, with nothing more powerful to replace them. So there's a good chance these things will be in "could use that money for a mortgage down payment" territory soon.

Unless you're filthy stinking rich, you don't buy that as a gift unless you really love someone.

Aren't they just going to come out with a new model eventually? Like I get that this one is the most powerful but it feels like most of the price is "I want this now" instead of it actually being worth that much

Hard to say at this point. It used to be the Nvidia would come out with a new series almost every year, but they're making so much money now from AI that people are suspecting they might just get out of the consumer GPU market altogether. This might be the best consumer grade card on the market for a long time. Even if they do make more powerful cards, this thing will future proof you for years.

No the consumer market is all but dead due to all the money they're making from AI

They changed all their factories from making consumer models to datacenter models, it’s because they make more profit when they sell chips to AI datacenters.

When the crash from the artificial funding and collusion happens, consumers won't be able to take the surplus cards because server cards don't just fit in regular PC's.

The crash will be a lot worse than the 2003 internet bubble.

I don't think so. Even when it crashes  processing power can still be used for other tasks. The internet bubble wasn't factories and production buildings. It was warehouses holding products that didn't move as fast as projected.

Some semiconductor companies are dropping the consumer’s that carried them all these years for AI oligopoly pricing.

Bubble will probably pop within 6 months so. It’ll be interesting to see how that goes for gamers

Short answer is with the AI chips being more profitable they're dropping consumer stuff

The chip in that card sells for 12k as a gaming gpu. or 100k as an ai gpu. Cost stays the same. you tell me what you would do.

Without the AI business, sure.

Problem is... NVIDIA is already looking like they're about to exit the consumer market and going all-in with AI development. Any research and development to sales for the consumer market will take a hit. If that happens, the 5090 will be "the most powerful and expensive consumer grade graphics card on the market" for a while.

The newer model won’t be as powerful, they might make a 5080 24 gb version .

Isn't there a US ban on them getting into China too? Even though they are somehow getting tons and tons of them anyway.

12k is already in that territory.

12k is down payment on a house ? $417,000 is the median home sale in America so 20% would be $83,400 it’s a nice gift but not a down payment unless the house cost like $60,000 or like a Kia Telluride

20% is nice but a luxury. Put 3% down and you're good to go, for thr most part. Depending on market conditions, 20% isn't even the best thing you can do if it means not getting into a home.

Enh, the RTX Pro 6000 is the "Lambo" equivalent. The 5090 would be a ZR1 Corvette.
