It's $12k usd. The average salary in China is like 15k. So they basically spent an average person's annual salary on the gift

What!!!! $12,000!!! Holy hell… I’m not a techy person (obviously) but I think this means it’s time for data center insurrections!! Ya know, just to liberate a few things. Here I’ve been thinking the reason the main personal being armed security at those things were just because people do not like them in their neighborhoods… Guess that just shows how ignorant I am..

This is for a flagship consumer GPU.

Data Centre GPUs cost a hell of a lot more.

6 figures.

There are also import restrictions, it was probably very hard to find.

4

u/Ok-Temporary-8243 1d ago

That too. Though you're still technically allowed to import for consumer use. It's a loophole that the US is now trying to close

It’s also prohibited being sold in China. So I’m sure it costs even more being contraband.

You can't buy it from a direct channel. But there's nothing stopping an import shop from getting someone to buy one abroad and bringing it back into the city. It's actually a big loophole that the US is trying to close since you have Chinese "tourists" trying to leave the country with suitcase fulls of high end cards

It was milk when that greed happened. Now its GPU.

u/honorable_raegdan 1d ago

So you can sell it in the country but can’t import it?

2

u/Ok-Temporary-8243 1d ago

You can't import it from the US. But I don't think countries like Singapore obey the export ban. Basically if you're willing to pay significantly above msrp, there's a range of grey market avenues for you to get the card

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

There’s a couple hour long Tech Jesus video where he goes over there and interviews people who buy and sell grey market cards over there.

There is an re-export ban on new GPUs and nvda may do spot checks if you buy in bulk.

The way to get around it is by setting up a “data center” or crypto mining facility in an old abandoned warehouse in Malaysia, buy the GPUs from Singapore. Put the GPUs there for six months or so, then maybe NVDA does the spot checks to make sure they aren’t re-sold.

Now create some internal emails that the GPUs were not suitable and would be replaced by newer GPUs.

Sell GPUs to parallel exporters bringing it into China.

It’s a crime now, of course.

Maybe the wedding isn’t in china?  Lmao

1

There's an entire black market industry with Taiwanese, Singaporean, and Chinese all cooperating to smuggle these GPUs into China. Gamers Nexus has an incredibly in-depth video about it.

u/sicilian504 1d ago

Why is it prohibited?

2

u/Ok-Temporary-8243 1d ago

It's ai grade graphics card. China has a computing disadvantage and the US is stopping shipments to make sure they don't catch up

2

u/FrequentlyImpolite 1d ago

Oh so it's not China that bans it it's that they aren't supposed to have any there. Makes sense

LOL do you know how much Chinese weddings cost? Mine was in 2012 and it cost us about 120k, my parents in law collected 80k in gifts. I paid for it so getting 10% back is like cool I guess. I'd say now it cost even more.

Wow holy shit. Glad my wedding was in Vietnam at a 5 star hotel for 20k, made all of it back too

I had another one in Bali then a super simple one in the US. Just China, OMG supposed to be three days we only did one. Also I didn't even get to eat any of the dinner my favorite dish, Song Zi Hui Yu was cold when I finally got to it, wife saved me a piece. 80 tables I had like 4 bottles of wine to drink even watered down by the end of the night.

2

u/Outrageous-Opinions 1d ago

LMAO I had a simple one in the US too for the US family side. And I also ate nothing at both weddings, had to go table by table and drank a fuck ton like you, should have watered it down because I don't drink.

2

u/MC-CREC 1d ago

I watered it down with cranberry juice and I got 4 bottles watered into 12 wine bottles. Did not help, and after all that I sat at the round table with the cousins and had to do a BaiJiu run with them 160 proof.

I can drink but that's more than drinking.

Ouch further proof that weddings are for the guest and not the bride or groom.

I agree with this, I would have done nothing. My wife just wanted wedding photos and a vacation so Bali was perfect for her. That cost us like $3,000 and we got 3 days free because a volcano exploded and stopped flying in the region.

My wedding cost me the trip to the city office. I planned to spend more money on it, but i dont have family or anything to go to it, my wife does so i wanted to do something for her, but then covid happened, then we decided to have a child, then it just seemed like a waste of money. I do regret not giving her that day though.

1

u/CommanderYarde 13h ago

You still can just do a ceremony and invite people close to you guys.

u/billgec 1d ago

Is that the price for a normal wedding or was yours extravagant?

1

u/BunBunny55 1d ago

Not the person but im familiar with chinese weddings. Thats mot extravagant at all. At least not in today's market. In 2012 maybe.

100k is basically considered like baseline. In the major cities its like, have a 100k+ plus weddings or dont at all if you cant afford that.

Several ive been to are easily 250k+ and their still not considered 'extravagant' merely 'good'

1

u/mihaiisraging 19h ago

100k usd? For a weeding?

1

u/StrangelyBrown 18h ago

What does it all get spent on? Are they booking flyovers of helicopters or something?

1

u/Cautious_Ticket_8943 1d ago

Wow, I'm glad my wedding cost 500 baht. No debt and not depleting the savings is the best wedding gift money can buy!

1

u/Impossible-Hold4703 1d ago

I would say most wouldnt spend that kind of money. Tbh even 10k or over would be too much unless wealthy or really wanting something huge.

1

u/Charming_Raccoon4361 1d ago

thats ridiculous , i would have used the 120k to pay for my house downpayment , unless you are loaded then its ok

2

u/MC-CREC 1d ago

It's not about loaded it's just tradition for the family. You do it because it make the parents and family happy. 80% comes back anyways but to your parents in law. Now everyone's numbers are different but this is I would say is pretty standard. I'm not even Chinese.

0

u/Jonnyflash80 1d ago

That's the cost of a wedding where people don't know how to responsibly spend money.

I spent less than 1K and put money into retirement investments like a reasonable person.

douyin has millions of staged skits like this. There's a couple of layers to it. First the face value of the 5090 bit being banned in china and all, and second because the price tag came out of the ~200-300k rmb customary gift a groom gifts the bride's maiden family prior to the wedding, which most of them still practice. An unexpected reciprocal gesture, generous to the point of being moved to tears.

1

u/Ok-Temporary-8243 5h ago

Chinese people splurge the fuck for weddings even when they're poor. It's a thing you do to show face

1

u/yellow_neck123 1d ago
