What kind of setup needs a $12k card? I’m guessing either he’s a self-employed software dev or a hardcore gamer?

the GPU weren't "meant" to be that expensive so people could afford it. Sure this is top of the line consumer stuff. The GPU used to cost like 1/5 of a PC's build cost but not anymore because shift in market demand and ai stuff

It ain't supposed to be that high, but AI exists

That'll only give you 90 fps at 4k in Wardogs.

But at least it can run Crysis.

Nobody needs 4k resolution

The 5090 is/was a prosumer card. Basically, if you buy it for gaming, you were flexing you could afford it. No gamer needs it, just status at that point.

Certain devs and such could use it for other, non-gaming, stuff that they want to run locally instead of paying for cloud compute.

When I bought mine it was around 4k. I am self-employed and use it for editing videos, but its a pretty common practice in gaming to buy top gear-1 for a long enduring custom pc. That said, CPU and GPU are most common to be a top gear-0, so what's considered the best. Simply because its usually the hardest and costliest to replace under pressure when the old one fails.

Ai topic has skyrocketed graphic card prices across the board, but especially top cards.

Back some time ago I bought top-1 for myself, but if I would've had the money I would've bought -0. Its all a question of what you can and are willing to spare

I dont really understand people building monster PCs for gaming these days

The big AAA studios games arent very demanding because theyre limited by ageing consoles

You don’t actually need to understand, all you need to know is some people have hobbies and want the best, others don’t care that much.

No one needs a Bugatti or a 100m motor yacht and yet they exist. People want what people want.

The MSRP for said card was like $2800ish. Either way, that was already AI juiced prices from the last couple years as well.

The computer needed to run this full blast is not that expensive - and just a year ago prior to RAM shortages would have cost around $1000 (9800x3d, 32gb ram). PC gaming is only really expensive because of AI right now.

Hardcore would have to be an understatement. For a card like that I’m thinking more in the territory of a professional gamer.

It is an overkill for games but great for local AI.

5090 started at like 3000$. Just like anything hardware related to AI, the prices jumped because data centers hog all the capacity for chips. My 32GB RAM kit was 200$, its now 1500$. Cant wait for the bubble to burst and prices comming down.
