The accusation was completely out of line, especially with such a serious claim being made without evidence

I hate Musk but it obviously wasn't a serious claim, it was just an insult for a guy who traveled to Thailand a lot. The other guy said something that pissed off Musk and so Musk responded like a 7th grader.

In 7th grade when you called your buddy a dog fucker it wasn't a claim that needed evidence.

Maybe we should hold political figures like Musk to a higher standard than 7th graders.

Also the fact that there's a big fucking difference between calling your buddy an insult where only your friends hear it, and calling someone you don't even know an insult (one of the most damaging ones as well) in front of an audience of 10s of millions of people.
