I'm a millennial. My daddy is a boomer, never hit me. My momma is a Gen Xer, and she would do the same thing sort of. She would make us plank or do crunches until failure and THEN beat us with shoes or a wooden spoon until we kept going with that mentality of "if you have enough energy to misbehave you have enough energy to keep working out."
