These aren't supposed to be practical. F1 isn't about building practical machines. But the advances that come from that research end up helping everyday cars. Same goes for a lot of pro sports. None of it is "practical." Yet the research done in elite teams ends up spreading to the wider public in a less extreme form.
Elon is an asshole but bashing this for not being immediately practical is just silly.
its because its made by one of elons companies and not the chinese government or smth like that, so reddit will hate it. half the people in tis sub dont seem to realise that if we want to make flying cars, we need to start somewhere. this is that somewhere, its progress
Yea this is quite literally the closest we have gotten to flying cars and suddenly it’s a problem. Had this been ANY other auto manufacturer people would be hyping this up like crazy
Are we really qualifying this as a step towards flying cars? It's not even a viable path forward.
The thing probably has a flight time in the single digit minutes if not less than a minute sustained, and certainly isn't a real car inside. Just a shell full of nothin but tank.
It's not even a path that would scale with miniaturization. Always gonna need a shit ton of gas to do anything
there are scooters and golf carts that are not actually cars. I bet this is some kind of electric scooter made of carbon fyber without any real heavy stuff inside except pressure tanks and controls
He is a literal fucking Nazi and white supremacist who has used his money to corrupt elections and the government for his own benefit - anyone who does not absolutely fucking hate him is a terrible person.
Nah, if BMW or Ferrari put a marketing stunt like this out there, I would also ask “why?” As well.
It isn’t a technological marvel. This is 2026, a computer attached with thrusters jumping over a few vehicles is more or less just stunt development team for another fast and furious movie.
We have had this tech a while, just never attached it to vehicle body panels. This is no different then when we put jet engines on cars years ago. For the stunt.
Cause they don’t have good stability, jobs, are struggling to pay any bills, yet we have the largest military in the world and have been constantly at war with the Middle East for decades.
Just a few things. I didn’t even get to the pedophilia or the guy profiting off this show being a Nazi.
There’s like a lot of reasons that the people who don’t forget don’t like this
But hey they put some jets on the Nazi brand car. Neat
The fact that instead of just letting it go you go out of the way to stalk my account kind of proves my point. May you get the help you need. God bless.
"everyone who used the default generated name on reddit is a bot"
are the engineers who made this technology doing nazi salutes in their workshops and laboratories? Hitler (far worse than elon btw) made volkswagen, an extremely successful car company. just because elon is by no means the best of people doesnt mean that what the engineers in his company have achieved isnt impressive.
I just don’t get why. Like the downforce was cool, I get that part. The flying part seems a little unnecessary but I guess I just don’t understand the importance of it
Because it's not practical nor pheasible? And in the current state Tesla is in, as well as what Elon has been doing and the current state of the US; it's nothing short of a distraction to just jingle keys in front of people so he can fuel his ego
High fashion is kind of like this. The weird costumes you see on the runway that absolutely no one would wear isn’t meant to be something the masses would buy in a department store. It’s the bleeding edge of art which finds its way to the mainstream through the creative process.
Not a direct comparison to science, but I see similar comments anytime something from Haute Couture goes viral.
But putting the tech in the car is the advancement. Radar was existing tech before they just put it in a car too and now it is a pretty standard and useful feature for cruise control. The act of putting it in is the first step to what it could become.
Making a car fly is obviously not a practical use for this but I can absolutely see a future where the ability to slow a vehicle down faster than mechanical grip allows is a feature.
Putting radar into a car was impressive because it took a large format and found a way to compact it, Putting tech designed for small satellites and backpacks for space walks into something the size of a car isn't innovation. Its just changing the object its attached it.
Thats like saying building a toaster in the trunk of a car is somehow an innovation just because it's never been done before when in reality nothing new had to be done to make it work.
Taking thrusters designed for manoeuvring small objects in zero or low gravity environments and then adapting them to meaningfully accelerate, brake or control a car presents an entirely different set of challenges.
That’s without considering they’re designed for manoeuvres not only in low gravity but also in low atmosphere environments.
Radar also was not miniaturised for the purposes of going into a car as some incredible feat of engineering. Early vehicle radars were aircraft radar that had already been significantly miniaturised for the aerospace industry exactly like the COPV used in the roadster.
A toaster in the boot of a car doesn’t fundamentally change the capabilities of the car so I’m not sure how’s that’s like saying the same thing at all.
It's not even innovative. Of course you can slap on thrusters on a car and make it fly. Nobody did it because it is not something practical. It is an expensive cool stunt, that's all.
And impractical cool stunts are kinda emblematic of what Elon "does" (he doesn't really do anything, just owns the companies)
