This should get upvoted to the top. Are we so desperate for things to get outraged about that now we are aggrieved because Metallica isn't political enough? My goodness, no wonder we can't elect a decent politician. Talk about focusing on all the wrong things.
"Dear Americans, you have important elections coming up soon, focus on that please instead on whether Shane Gillis is evil for joking about women wearing revealing clothes at the gym and an old man being grumpy about political speeches during live shows"
Culture wars are a distraction from the class war pushed largely by bots and trolls.
Our overlords have done great at reengineering us to approach every contemporary hot button issue from any angle but class. It’s not the billionaire’s fault! Your diminished quality of life is white man’s fault! Or the trans communities fault! But definitely not the fault of those hoarding all the money and scamming every penny that they can out of the vanishing middle class!
(about 3 min in, it's the extended edition Enter Sandman™ sing along that never fucking ends).
I think I'm immune to anything else embarrassing that he does after following them for so long. They have been prone to bouts of extreme pick me, embarrassing mid life crisis divorce Dad energy since about 2003.
I still love them but yeah, don't expect them to gain self awareness any time soon ❤️🤘🏻
People just want a reason to shit on someone famous. Is every music artist an educated and informed political commentator? Are we supposed to listen to their opinions just because they are famous?
Why only politics? Should we ask musicians what they think caused the Late Bronze Age collapse? Or maybe what they think is the reason for the missing mass in galaxies? Thoughts on Riemann Hypothesis? I'd like to hear what Adele thinks about Haber-Bosch catalyst pathways.
You’re missing the point- Metallica made a political statement here, and THAT opens them up to criticism. I can pay attention to this for a moment and then also focus on elected representatives. But I’m very much allowed to go up in arms when a metal band tries to say that their metal show is only for “forgetting about all the outside shit”.
Like- as a musician- I’m more offended about that than anything. Metal is meant to confront, to antagonize, and to draw out an argument. It’s meant to re-contextualize the world, not to forget that the world exists.
I don't know, it is very nice to be able to forget that the world exists for an hour or two occasionally.
Do actors, for example need to start voicing their political opinions DURING movies?
That's the distinction here, there's definitely a long-standing tradition of musicians choosing to do exactly that. James Hetfield doesn't like it, many people think it's essential.
I think it CAN be done very well but it can also seem performative.
It's a nuanced issue.
I really don't think that there is a right or wrong answer and ultimately it's up to that individual artist. You have every right to criticise anyone for any reason.
I'm personally more concerned that AI is destroying music entirely as well as threatening humanity as a whole.
I probably just need to spend less time on Reddit, all the different outrages are getting to me.
Think what you want, drink water, FUCK Israel and Free Palestine:) 🍉
