I thought Metallica was calling out someone individually when I saw all the drama and I do guess it was aimed at Macklemore but honestly

I sorta got what they said
We have been paid by you , you have travelled a long way, let’s all leave our politics at the door and just enjoy music

And honestly why not ? Not everyone has to be political, or not everyone has to share their views for you to like them or not.

Like we are already getting so much shoved down our throats from Gaza,Israel, Ukraine, Russia, China, politics around female bodies, immigration and so on and so on it can get fucking exhausting at times

It’s funny that everyone assumes that they are talking about Macklemore instead of someone like Kid Rock who’s doing the same shit from the other side of the aisle. Confirmation bias that you WANT to be outraged because a band says “we’re not going to try to sway you to our beliefs”.

That’s because the timing of them saying anything was immediately after the Macklemore drama. They had shows after Kid Rock was saying stuff and said nothing. Context matters.

Everyone was talking about ed Sheeran not Macklemore though

u/YellojD 10h ago

Yeah, and I’m sure the dudes who tried to sue a bunch of teenagers for downloading their songs on Napster really support the Palestinian cause.

And how long was it between their last tour and this Sphere engagement? I’m not getting into a pissing contest over this. Believe what you want to believe. And I shall too.

1

u/Eviljoshing 9h ago

“Not getting into a pissing contest” and then asks for facts. You’re just wrong, admitting it (even to yourself) is ok.

Because James is a conservative. Look it up.

u/Sovereign-Vault 11h ago

Dude, come on now the majority of musicians are liberal the majority of the time that somebody’s getting up on stage and saying something like that they’re liberal. yeah there’s one kid rock for every 100 other musicians that are talking about Palestine or women’s rights or some other shit. You can use your eyes and kind of see what’s happening and who is doing more of something than somebody else.

They never said it when it was just Kid Rock. Timing is very suspect

3

They’ve been saying it at every show for decades. This is just more outrage media that social media has generated for clicks, and it’s working.

100%

I went and saw a play the other night. Were the actors supposed to make big political speeches before the show? No. It's entertainment.

u/seantellsyou 13h ago

I agree with the sentiment, but at the same time a lot of their songs are inherently political lyrically... so its like.. "let's not be political while we sing this tune about the injustices and horrors of war".. its a little weird. Probably would have been better to just not comment at all

8

u/TenMoosesMowing 12h ago

“Say the thing we want you to say! Condemn war! Say you don’t like r@pe or r@cism! Tell us which side of the Israel Palestine conflict you stand on! Say it! SAY IT!!!!! We just wanna hear you say it!”

0

u/seantellsyou 12h ago

But that didnt happen. No one was asking James to make a political statement at all. His comment was entirely unprovoked

-4

u/coldlightofday 11h ago

And it was entirely vague and reasonable. Yet here you are.

2

u/seantellsyou 11h ago

How was his statement vague? Seemed pretty cut and dry to me. "We dont want to make political statements at our concerts". My point is that saying nothing at all would have worked better towards that goal.

Also, here i am? You mean on reddit bull shitting about the topic we are all discussing? Or do you mistake me for actually giving a real shit?

0

u/coldlightofday 11h ago

As others have pointed out, he has been making similarly vague statement for years, perhaps decades now. Nothing about it implies it’s about any specific thing. But the bots and algorithms sure have you up in arms.

0

u/seantellsyou 11h ago

Do my comments actually come across to you as "up in arms"? Or have the bots and algorithms actually been getting to you maybe? I swear, I actually do not give a fuck about this... im just joining in on the convo with my 2 cents as a long time Metallica fan

u/coldlightofday 10h ago

It seems to me you’ve gotten pulled into really caring about a really vague comment, that’s being pumped up on Reddit big time. If we really cared about genocide in Palestine, I don’t think this is moving the needle.

1

u/seantellsyou 10h ago

Is it vague? Or was he referring to genocide in Palestine? Youre being inconsistent. I never mentioned genocide or Palestine by the way

2

u/Dark_Tranquility 11h ago

Sick of seeing this bullshit opinion. If you read what he said and see it as truly neutral, you have dogshit reading comprehension. He said "we aren't here, like other entertainers, to bore you with our bullshit"

Why did he say "like other entertainers" if he wasn't making a point here? Why include that? Why are you so convinced he meant nothing at all?

-1

u/coldlightofday 11h ago

Why do you let bots and algorithms manipulate you and why do you care what James Hatfield, of all random people, care? Particularly when the statement is so vague. What a waste.

1

u/Dark_Tranquility 10h ago

Why am I not surprised none of what I said seemed to register with you at all? You just call the whole thing pointless now? Weak.

1

u/coldlightofday 9h ago

You didn’t really say anything. You seem to think awfully high of yourself for being such a tool.

0

u/Dark_Tranquility 11h ago edited 11h ago

Key point here is nobody forced James to grandstand about not grandstanding. You're imagining people to get mad at

4

u/coldlightofday 11h ago

Their political songs were about big broad ideas, usually in a historical context, not really current events. Their political songs are as vague as this statement.

0

u/gmo7160 12h ago

Exactly👏

0

u/ZoharDTeach 11h ago

Which songs? Nothing since Welcome Home. That was 40 years ago.

1

u/seantellsyou 11h ago

All their shows are just the hits from 40 years ago anyway. Or least it was when I saw them. Idk how much they change it up

-1

u/SteroidMaximus 13h ago

Maybe you should explore the history of Politics in their music. It was braindead of James to say they are not talking politics when so much of their music is literally wrapped up in it.

TLDR: Their music is political and they are sellouts

1

u/harrymanback79 12h ago

Every famous musician is a sellout

0

u/Far-Astronomer-2361 12h ago

That may be true but there are levels and there should be limits. Gotta draw the line somewhere and Metallica passed that line a long time ago.

0

u/kulex666 12h ago

Not sure why you’re being downvoted. Napster is more metal than metallic will ever be.

u/SuggestionMedical736 11h ago

Spoken like a true white male 1%er

Yeah Metallica is a very apolitical just turn your brain off and rock out band... They built much of their reputation and library on their political music.

Love James, he's older and more mellow now and just wants to rock out and enjoy his years. But for him to go out of way to talk about being apolitical and leaving that at the door before playing multiple tracks from ...And Justice for All, "Disposable Heroes," etc. is just nonsense. He wasn't prompted to even bring up this topic.
