In the UK each party has a very strict spending limit per election that's enforced by the electoral commision (a fully independent agency that regulates elections among some other things)

it's a bit complicated how the limit is calculated by party but currently it's either just under £1.5 million total (for England, Scotland and Wales has much less), or just over £50,000 x the number of seats they are contesting, whichever is larger

for the major parties it would be something like just under £30 million (about $40m USD) per election if they were contesting every seat in England (you can add on a few more million if they are also contesting seats in Scotland and Wales, which the major parties normally do), and that's the maximum legal limit, they may not necessarily always spend the maximum

Yeah, I wasn’t sure on the details of how it works, I just saw the total #’s. That’s how it should be in the USA…elections should be publicly funded with all candidates getting the same amount to spend, and then they would actually have to win on their merits and not just flush millions down the drain.

Imagine what could be done with all the money wasted on campaigns. Not to mention the fact that campaigning/raising $ starts WAY too far before the actual elections here. It seems like the entire year is campaign spending. Shit, Trump announced he was running again in 2024 and raking in cash in like 2020. lol
