I remember somewhere a post by a Ukrainian American citizen saying they regretted voting for Trump because they thought he could end the war in Ukraine. This was a few years ago, I wonder how much more regret they have now.
124
u/Kevadu 5h ago
Why on earth did they believe that...
86
u/Crafty-Help-4633 5h ago
Because he said he would and that's all MAGA needs. They don't need facts or information. They believed it because they're in a cult.
17
u/mind_mischief_89 4h ago
Democrat politicians need to just start lying to R voters then, since they are so gullible
30
u/King_of_the_Kobolds 4h ago
No because then all of a sudden Fox and other media outlets will get very good at exposing lies and showing receipts.
3
u/vi_sucks 3h ago
This is what i've been saying.
The problem is that the Democrats kinda built the party around being sensible and honest, so they don't really have that dirty tricks machinery any more.
What we need is for some dark art magician to start up a fake MAGA PAC, soak up a bunch of donations and then spend it all on Democrats. These people are just begging to get their pockets ran. And it would work both ways, first by taking their money and putting it to good use, and second by making them suspicious of other MAGA grifters.

The issue to me is...that normal people who have real concerns are being manipulated by algorithms and mis/disinformation. They fall into a cycle where they are told one thing, but it's not true. By the time they fully understand what they were told and the truth, it's too late.
It's much like the concept of a lie on social media spreading far and wide before the truth comes out, but the truth always fails to reach the same people. So people are left believing a lie.
We need some goddamn laws to prevent this bullshit from causing unfounded support for con artists. A bill that requires truth or causes fines for regular people and HUGE fines for companies.

Americans failed him and failed Ukraine and by extension Europe by reelecting a Russian asset as President. It was quite obvious who he was subservient to in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, but Americans were like, who cares if I say America first, let's make Russia great again! So here we are.

It should be noted that it is 1/3 of Americans who respond to a satisfaction survey and not actually 1/3 of America. I personally have never responded to a survey of this nature and don’t know that I know anyone who would waste their time with it.
Unless you’re referring to votes which wouldn’t be representative of today either, and (depressingly) probably isn’t representative of the majority of Americans at that time because .
I’m not saying this to excuse anyone or to try and invoke empathy for those who voted for and/or did/do approve of this garbage but just simply pointing out that statistics should be taken with an appropriately sized grain of salt.15
u/hokuten04 5h ago
It doesn't matter since the US re-elected him, even after the disaster of his first term, his attempted coup, him taking home classified documents, his pedophilia etc... most of americans still looked at that piece of garbage and said "yes that's my president right there"

77 million Americans voted for this chump as opposed to 75 million Americans who voted for the other Party. It was no mystery how he was going to behave, so it's easy to assume that more than half of America approves and encourages his behaviour.
You may want it to be an anomaly, but this is exactly what the majority of voting Americans want. This is not an aberration, this is what America truly is.
8
u/Original-Body-5794 5h ago
Keep in mind turnout was like 64%, a third of america looked at this either didn't care enough or thought "Heh I see no difference".
7
u/JosefGremlin 4h ago
An insane thought when the first term included human rights abuses through child confiscation, a white supremacist rally, hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths from Covid, a culture so insistent on refusing to acknowledge mistakes that they held a press conference at the Four Seasons Landscaping company, and an attempted insurrection.

u/Integer_Domain 3h ago

16
u/No_Rip4646 5h ago
He did win the election but more votes were cast for a candidate not named Donald Trump.
3
u/iSleepInJs 5h ago
Look, you’re misinterpreting my point. 162m is 49.09% of America. There is a conversation to be had about voting here, but it’s good to keep in mind that increasing amounts of voter suppression is occurring in the name of security when having it.
I didn’t say it was an anomaly, though perhaps I do wish it was one. It’s certainly a movement but one that is increasingly losing momentum. Even still I hear enough support to understand it’s not an anomaly, but I don’t hear enough to say that it is what “America truly is.”
Perhaps I’m being optimistic overall but my only point is that the stated third of America is based of satisfaction surveys. I’ve never filled out a survey and I can’t think of many people that I know who would. Furthermore if that survey is conducted online, who’s to say there’s no bots responding?

Why do Americans keep talking about voting numbers? The fact is, he is your president and represents you on the world stage whether you like it or not. His and your country's actions don't get excused because not everyone supports him. He's not only affecting the world as a whole, but he's fucking up your country, too. It has gone too far. If the checks and balances aren't working to remove him due to his blatantly illegal (and apparently un-American according to you) actions, then it is up to the people to do it.

There are serious anomalies in the voting count tabulation data in the 2024 election, and there was unprecedented interference leading up to election day and on the day itself.
Many of us [Americans] do not believe that 77M people actually voted for him.
I travel frequently throughout the country for work, and I am often in "conservative" (Republican) spaces, so this isn't 'liberal echo chamber' stuff. There are variances by region, but based on hundreds of conversations I've had with Americans over the last 2 years, Trump supporters make up about 1 out of 7 adults, so about 14.2%. (and honestly, that's being generous.)
I would also say the majority of people here are really angry. Media/social media is not showing the millions of people protesting, people being abducted, detained and shot for showing dissent. All of this is being suppressed: they want you to think Americans support this administration/don't care, but that is a false narrative. They are trying to remove support from our allies so we are isolated and easier to control.
Please don't believe everything the media/sm shows you, the billionaires own the media, ALL OF IT.

I would argue Elon and crew stole it with money. Elections here are decided by money sadly.
28
u/Pdiddily710 5h ago
The amount of $ spent (and wasted) on elections in the US is obscene!
I saw a post the other day that more money has been spent on attack ads on Talarico than was spent on the ENTIRE last general election in the UK. It was like $89 million vs like 78 million.
Considering only 1 candidate can win, more than 50% of the billions spent each election is on losing candidates, so a total waste…then if u add the legalized bribery called lobbying once the winners are announced billions more gets dumped in.
SCOTUS totally fucked the country with Citizens United, and it will never recover.
2
u/nadiayorc 2h ago edited 2h ago
In the UK each party has a very strict spending limit per election that's enforced by the electoral commision (a fully independent agency that regulates elections among some other things)
it's a bit complicated how the limit is calculated by party but currently it's either just under £1.5 million total (for England, Scotland and Wales has much less), or just over £50,000 x the number of seats they are contesting, whichever is larger
for the major parties it would be something like just under £30 million (about $40m USD) per election if they were contesting every seat in England (you can add on a few more million if they are also contesting seats in Scotland and Wales, which the major parties normally do), and that's the maximum legal limit, they may not necessarily always spend the maximum

Elon and co had massive influence I don't disagree, but at the end of they day PEOPLE vote. A third of the voting population thought trump in 2024 was a good choice, and another third didn't care enough to vote against him. It's not like there was much thinking to do, the events of J6 alone should be enough to make you not want to vote for him.

The way people have behaved and fallen in line since he returned makes me think there's something in the water here and more people wanted this than they admit. People want familiarity here now even if the familiar is awful. Like an abused spouse. The world is changing fast and this was a retreat to what they hoped would be something they knew. But like a spouse returning to an abuser, it's always nightmarishly worse when they return.

Zelensky's ' answer ' tells you everything you need to know about Trump.
Zelensky has been strongly urged in private by European leaders to be very careful in showing your feelings against Trump.
And that message is clear...Trump is a tantrum throwing, toys out the pram infant.
That's how world leaders deal with America today.
Tiptoe around their infantile stupidity and childishness.
Stand in his court, flatter him, present shiny objects, preferably golden, tickle the fuckers chin.
This is America, where the world has to advise that speaking to them means using language of the puerile, the fragile child.
And it is beyond pathetic
12
u/sepltbadwy 2h ago
Yeah Z’s a legend for always handling this with diplomacy. As he said, they even committed to the ceasefire they had not been told about, just to not embarrass the US. Which Russia broke immediately, and then Trump dropped sanctions AND bought their diesel.
Quite how Z handles all this with respect and integrity while at war is a symbol to us all, and most of all American voters.

The administration has declared us terrorists and we are being abducted, detained, imprisoned, and shot/killed for dissent. Protesters are not being arrested like the 1960's, they are being silenced.
Also remember if we lose our jobs here, we lose our healthcare. The majority of us oppose all of this, and we are not just going along; we are doing the best we can while they continue to steal our wealth, our land, our data, and drain our resources.

In no way shape or form.
But this isn't just a yank thing.
Just another version of us vs them, unfortunately it's their greed that separates us from them. That or fear, we are a simple species.
But in this case it's greed and Trump and Co. have no fucking idea otherwise. If only they understood what they are sacrificing for wealth. They could of been venerated, valued beyond anyone before quite frankly, but instead they chose personal wealth, which is now a target that they will fear will be taken away from them.Good, it deserves to be taken away.

They want to it seems like you have to sell away your soul bit by bit to accumulate a large amount of wealth (I wouldn’t know) but they don’t want to be social pariah’s on the day-to-day. It’s a lot easier to hide behind corporations to get your hands dirty, and then clean your hands of how you made that money when you go home. It's really the effects of social media, disinformation, lack of trust, tribalism, two party system that got us here. The more extreme your candidate the more likely you can pull fringe votes, and it's really easy to get a group of easily influenced people to vote for you if you promise to solve their issues.
This is a trend happening across the world, it's not unique to the US but US is vulnerable due to its two party system. There is an increasing dissatisfaction with wealth inequality and quality of life and the incumbent party is always blamed for it.
It's extremely likely Republicans will get swept out of office these midterms and Trump will lose majority of his executive power to Democrats losing house and senate. Mostly cause the economy is shit and this time there is an obvious person and party to blame. If there is any silver lining the coalition of the crazy Republican vote is dead for a long time cause they absolutely fucked their voter base with gas prices and even any idiot knows. Maybe we can have a string of normal politicians now.
