When are Tesla owners getting autopilot?

346

u/eltaconobueno 6h ago

Tesla owners have been running on autopilot for years.

u/b1ack1323 4h ago

They are talking about FSD and you know it. Which they don’t have and will never get.

9

u/jaysoprob_2012 48m ago

I think they were saying the Tesla owners are on auto pilot themselves not the car.

17

u/standard-issue-man 3h ago

Yeah, if your autopilot was a 15 year old driving for the first time

12

u/Esketamine77 2h ago

Just have to babysit the Full.self.driving car the whole time so you don't get sent into a retaining wall or steered off a cliff is all. No biggie

8

u/BadgerlandBandit 6h ago

I'm confused about this as well. Someone I know has it and uses it all the time in their model Y.

79

u/FowlSec 6h ago

It's still not fully self driving, which was the aim.

43

u/cookeryandwookery 6h ago

It doesn’t do what it was sold as. These idiots will say “it never was supposed to fly! It just blows out jets of air! Only idiots thought it could fly!”

-9

u/couchcushion7 5h ago

to be fair youre truly an idiot if you think it flies. so like you might check yourself on who you think is the idiot in this scenario lol

everyone who watched the video is well aware its controlled bursts of air. he even clearly said for short intervals. it doesnt maintain flight - noone said it did. but you implied it was sold to so.... again youre the one with the misunderstanding

9

u/FowlSec 5h ago

You're arguing semantics, and you're clutching at straws. You're not getting a car with thrusters.

-5

u/couchcushion7 5h ago

Never even remotely said i was.

If im arguing semantics by specifying the difference between something that flies, and something that doesnt- what the fuck are you arguing?

0

u/FowlSec 5h ago

I'm arguing that it doesn't matter if it flies or has thrusters, nobody will receive a car with either functionality.

Are you slow?

-4

u/TheRealSiinn 4h ago

People having a conversation and ur just coming in saying irrelevant shit nobody asked to hear like are you slow?

Ah, I see. In the way that you still need to be paying attention as the driver? That makes sense, but I feel like there's probably legal reasons for this.

This summer I got the opportunity to use it and I didn't need to correct it on an hour+ drive which was about 30% city/side roads and the rest interstate.

29

u/FowlSec 6h ago

Yeah.

Ultimately Tesla made a mistake using cameras for self driving, and actually fell behind. If you look at what it takes for Waymo to do fully self driving cars, it's got cameras and LiDAR, and a big ass AI stack, radar too.

Elon just lied and got to a decent point to inflate the stock price, position himself as some self-made genius, and never delivered. All the other car manufacturers are at roughly the same point.

He does it on everything, even if this was actually possible with current technology (it isn't, the physics just doesn't work), modern infrastructure isn't designed for flying cars, and there would need to be huge changes to infrastructure anyway.

You're not getting a flying car, and even if you were, it wouldn't come from Elon. He'll take your deposit and use it to inflate stock price without ever producing what you paid for.

12

u/BadgerlandBandit 6h ago

As someone that has followed SpaceX since around 2014, I know this all too well.

I'm going to guess they'll eventually get a few out to some creators, but it's mostly just a publicity stunt.

5

u/Whole-Scientist-2731 4h ago

Waymos get stuck all the time my friend works remotely and drives them around when they get confused or stuck happens more than you think. Been in many Tesla's road tripping through Cali they do a really good job "self driving but I would never buy one they have no soul

1

u/simple10 2h ago

Wait, is Tesla/Elon actually insinuating that the car sold to consumers will be able to do the stunts in the video? I just assumed it was check out the new car and here’s a cool video of it doing tricks for marketing reasons, via extra tech we added on

1

u/FowlSec 2h ago

There are 2 versions with thrusters, one that has them for acceleration, and one that jumps. Apparently the jumping version is invite only, but the other one is available for $250,000.

1

u/simple10 2h ago

Oh wow I had no idea lol

-1

u/nophoplease 5h ago

Not necessarily a mistake and wouldn't say Tesla fell behind at all. LiDAR is an extra layer of protection, but Tesla would argue it is unnecessary. If the cameras and the software are capable, LiDAR becomes more of a redundancy. I think what gets lost sometimes is the self-driving in Tesla is advancing because of the software and that software gets improved upon constantly and even more so with the addition of AI. I've been in both a ton, and while both are impressive, Teslas being able to drive on any road instead of restricted areas shows it hasn't fallen behind at all.

u/talentedfingers 4h ago

They still have problems with poorly designed parking lots with inconsistent exits. I was in a Tesla when it decided to turn left from a right turn only lane and almost get in an accident.

4

u/b1ack1323 4h ago

The non lidar approach boxes them in. They cannot achieve the context they need for FSD when road lines become faded or not painted it shits the bed. Even Waymo’s with lidar struggle with this.

I rest my case your honor.

1

u/LazyProphet 4h ago

Yep can’t even get obvious jokes

-2

u/BadgerlandBandit 4h ago

Forgive me for not understanding and wanting clarification. Guess I'll just stay uninformed next time. /s

3

u/BusBeginning 6h ago

Yeah. I use it daily and it’s awesome.

It's just some adaptive cruise control with automatic braking and stuff. Like many modern cars, it makes it so you have very little to do in the highway but for city driving it's just about useless.

Full self driving isn't really possible with today's technology, might never be, but companies like Maymo rely heavily on LIDAR which is why they have those weird spinny things on the top. Many years ago Elon said they're ugly and they'll only use cameras. That's just never going to be possible. I'm pretty sure waymo and the like also rely heavily on human input when the cars inevitably get stuck

0

u/BadgerlandBandit 4h ago

It's not though. I've used adaptive cruise control when working at a Volvo dealership. Whatever it's called that their Model Y had makes turns and changed lanes as well.

2

u/4friedchickens8888 4h ago

Call it slightly advanced adaptive cruise control.

Volvo has always been a "safety first" company while tesla has always been a "safety maybe some day" company

0

u/BadgerlandBandit 4h ago

I'm no Elon, or even Tesla fan. I also don't care what it's called. As someone who rides motorcycles and enjoys driving, especially off road or harsher conditions, I'm still always extra cautious around any Tesla, Waymo, or similar vehicles.

I'm just pointing out that the statement that it's "Just some adaptive cruise control with automatic braking and stuff." Or that it "...makes it so you have very little to do in the highway but for city driving it's just about useless." is absolutely false.

1

u/4friedchickens8888 2h ago

Meh I guess I don't know any tesla drivers and haven't given a shit about them in several years so maybe it's a lot better now. I find that hard to believe though... Also I'm in Canada and I'm absolutely certain it'll never be able to function in winter

1

u/Ambitious_Bad_3192 28m ago

"I guess I actually don't know anything about what I'm saying, but I'm mad"

6

u/loikyloo 3h ago

They sort of have them already its just a case of the regulation to use them means you can't use them in most countries.

12

u/cookeryandwookery 2h ago

They were sold a lie. Like this bullshit is a lie. But you can give Elon $250k today for it.

Or the cybertruck that didn’t look like a dumpster. Or high speed rail. Or mars by 2030. How are people still accepting these lies and paying for them?

3

u/Quirky-Skin 6h ago

When we colonize Mars. So never

1

u/GeneralGuide9081 5h ago

Hahaha underrated comment. This is such a glorious dig.

1

u/Razzoz9966 4h ago

Autobuylot

1

u/amakai 4h ago

That's a good idea, Musk should launch a financial advisor service.

1

u/3eyedfish13 4h ago

I've used FSD like twice since I bought mine. It's neat, but nowhere near aggressive enough for traffic around here.

1

u/mrASSMAN 51m ago

The roadster actually will be teslas first manual car Elon said lol.. it won’t actually have any autonomous features (aside from the flipping demonstration)

1

u/kingOfEssos 3h ago

Auto pilot has been out and have been using for years now

3

u/cookeryandwookery 3h ago

No it hasn’t. It’s never delivered on the promise and Tesla even admitted it never fucking will. You were duped and making excuses.

-4

u/BusBeginning 6h ago

I use auto pilot everyday. Have done 3 hr road trips with it. It’s great.

2

u/Mr830BedTime 3h ago

I’m downvoting you because your testimonial goes against my prejudice against Tesla and that bad man Elon Musk
