People literally won't be able too drive them, anyways, that's kind of the thing

A whole new layer of road and care legislation would need to be created to even regulate legally how a car that can fly CAN drive, where it can fly, etc etc, and also just the degree of overhead hazards already in most cities (power lines, lights, signs), and billion things one could crash into and the liability insurance involved, etc etc

Like, guys, the roads and world literally are not designed around flying vehicles, and flying vehicles would need active controlled routes and so on and ATC of somekind to keep billionaires from driving willy nilly and crashing into one another

This is a lot like the 'we're goona have a colony on mars in the decade' shit Musk pushes. It's a tech demo and has no real application, it isn't really something people can 'use,' and is also actively something with so many fail points that the average consumer can't actually access or buy through the sheer cost of what liabilities and so on would make licensing / insuring shit like that would be

I remember back in the 90s and instructor explaining to us that, while flying cars are cool, practically actually having flying cars would be chaos, for how bad of drivers folks already are and now adding the layer of verticality into things too. Shit would be chaos, aint no practical means to really do it without roads alone for the sheer scale of accidents it would cause.

Fuck man people on boats regularly smash into one another still going full tilt over a lake or something and that is still way less vectors than the risk flying cars have lol, we cannot practically actually use flying cars at all, this is a stunt to pump stock prices, not actually release and move a product to market.

No insurance company on the planet would insure this absolute massive liability

7

u/LickinThighs2 4h ago

Exactly lol, there are just to many, idk, holes in where and how they can at all be safely used by any kind of general public, that I only see it being impossible to really justify lol. Way to dangerous, we're going to have these bricks just flying through living rooms and grocery stores if we unleashed them to the people lol.

u/AmericanCitizenry 3h ago

There's already a legal work around for that.

Been on the books for decades.

17

u/Lord_of_Chainsaw 4h ago

It doesnt even fly it basically just does a kick flip

7

u/AmericanCitizenry 3h ago

Just enough to get away from the poors, or better yet, for the police departments to have such cars.

1

u/Ldghead 2h ago

Well, my car can't do a kick flip, so...

1

u/MaryBerrysDanglyBean 52m ago

My car kick flips over traffic to land into the emergency service crew trying to save someone's life.

Didn't actually save myself anytime. Crippled myself, killed several people and increased the current problem.

12

u/TheB3rn3r 3h ago

Agreed!

To anyone thinking they can just buy a flying car… you realize people suck at simply driving right now right? Imagine giving them the verticality to really mess things up..

Pilots have to go through a TON of training for a reason.

The dream that one day everyone would have a flying car is just that, a dream. Unless somehow all the regulatory authorities really step down and roll over… this would lead to a surge in all kinds of insurances as well since now we’d have to worry about some baffoon flying their Tesla roadster into our home’s roof… or imagine a car landing on another car… it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Cool tech if it’s real but outside of trying to reduce friction to increase 0-60 capabilities, I don’t see an application for this and the other part is what about emergency stopping as well in this mode?

7

u/southass 3h ago

Or imagine there is some obstacle or debris in the road and this thing decides to go flying when you are driving under a multi lane overpass 💀

1

u/JrLavish194 3h ago

You usually increase friction to decrease 0-60 btw.

1

u/TheB3rn3r 2h ago

You’re right. I’m not full braining it atm hahah

7

u/Hurrly90 2h ago

You lost me at Fly, It didnt fly, it Jumped. Due to thrusters under neath and on its sides.

It is a very impressive concepet car, but that all it is. how would the thrusters be refilled? How long they last? Even at the end of the 'reveal' viedeo they saw we might be able to clear more? IT didnt fly, if jumped.

this is not a viable on road vehicle, ANYWHeRE. Unless the driver is Michael Knight.

1

u/toeknn 1h ago

Itd be pretty viable on a lunar or martian surface

1

u/people_arent_nice 6m ago

how would the thrusters be refilled?

An air compressor. ~6 hours.

How long they last?

About 2-3 seconds.

IT didnt fly, if jumped.

Sure? It's still higher than my car can jump, which is zero feet.

this is not a viable on road vehicle, ANYWHeRE.

*so many* supercars are track only. This isn't unusual in the least.

they're asking half a million for the pre-order and 'tbd' for the full amount. you think people with that money are worried about the practicality of this thing as a daily driver?

1

u/smurf123_123 3m ago

The thrusters were filled with compressed air, they were all for show. I think the only "legit" one was the one that assisted its zero to 60 launch. Still, having to take a tank to the dive shop after launching the car is a little strange.

7

u/Justaredditor85 3h ago

Honestly trying to operate a flying car sounds to me like peak darwinisme at this point.

11

u/LetmeSeeyourSquanch 3h ago

This is just another rich people only flex thing. Only rich people are going to have them. They will drive it on private property or a race track they rented. Won't be surprised about hearing of a multimillionaire or billionaire getting killed playing around in one of these things.

8

u/locofspades 3h ago

Ok, that last line has got me back on board. Hey billionaires! Yall bitches if you dont fly in your tesler model kickflip.... now we wait 🤣

4

u/Keyser_Kaiser_Soze 1h ago

This is still a hundred years from being a real product.
There is no “car” in this tech demo. Just a prop that can perform a series of demonstrations that requires 100s of highly skilled engineers to setup.
They need to shrink the propulsion system and find a different propellant capture system small enough that actual people can fit inside. And it needs to work again and again.
Maybe a hundred years is being optimistic.

1

u/sp33dmaster77 1h ago

Damnit! You revealed Elons secret plot to reduce the number of individuals that have a chance of matching his net worth status!

1

u/Ok_Function2282 2m ago

It's just not going to be produced as a car that anyone can buy.

It doesn't matter how much money you have.

Just demo was the extent of how much those thrusters could do on a massive amount of fuel (air,) and that was on a car shaped box with no engines or anything of significant weight inside

3

u/LordOfTheNear 3h ago

People wouldn't be able to drive them.

To, 1 o.

2

u/MuhfugginSaucera 1h ago

People can't tell the difference between three 2-3 letter words but still vote. Wild

7

u/Vetni 3h ago

To*

6

u/LickinThighs2 3h ago

I've let my high school English teacher down :(

4

u/Logical-Pair-89 3h ago

I think it's funny though that that's the word you chose to emphasize, too.

1

u/Rhowryn 3h ago

There's already a regulatory system for "flying cars"... Aka helicopters. Which makes it impossible for most people to operate one anyways.

1

u/iffyClyro 2h ago

We’ve had since 1954 to come up with a solution to this issue.

Aerocar

1

u/CraftsmanMan 2h ago

That thing would be destroyed by any pothole riddled road in New York, aka all of them

1

u/Mundane_Finding2697 2h ago

My thoughts exactly.

We have issues with folks staying on a physical road.

Can you IMAGINE the audacity folks would have in the air?

Cutting folks off in middair. Crashes in the air and a CAR FALLS ON YOUR HOUSE, a place of business where people are, etc... Nah.

1

u/zam1138 2h ago

“Welcome to Coruscant: home of the mid-air collision”

1

u/thatsanewone26 2h ago

Forget the flying aspect, the suction aspect that they marketed which pinned the car to the ramp and would make for extreme corner handling would make the car not street legal, as it would require sucking the air from under the car and blowing it out the back, which would suck up and spit out a lot of rocks and debris on a standard city road.

1

u/jhectorchrist 2h ago

Agreed, but it’s not “too”. Just “to”. Or maybe “TO”.

1

u/IDontWantToArgueOK 2h ago

We have barely started regulating self driving cars.

1

u/Several_Hour_347 2h ago

Why do people keep saying it can fly? Nothing in the demonstration showed it can fly

1

u/After_Resource5224 2h ago

Agreed. The only feasible way to create self driving routes would be for public transportation/self driving vehicles/pods whatever. The robots coordinate you just punch in destinations. But, let me be clear: NO FUCKING WAY am I letting a god damn toaster do the driving. I will sit my happy ass on my little farm for the rest of my life and die on that hill. I watched Terminator WAY to many times as a kid to think any of this is going to go well, I'm expecting the Temu version of a t-800 anyday now. Terminator/Idiocracy cross over.

1

u/Illeazar 1h ago

This is a lot like the 'we're goona have a colony on mars in the decade' shit Musk pushes

A small colony on mars in a decade would be more likely to happen than roads and regulations ready for flying cars in a decade.

1

u/IndyBananaJones4eva 1h ago

It can't actually fly brother. It just fell with compressed air thrusters slowing it down.

1

u/UwUHowYou 1h ago

Honestly I think the best customer for something like this is the military, seeing a car do this will get some of their imaginations jogging

1

u/harambe623 1h ago

Where did you get flying from? This car does not fly. These are short bursts of nitrogen. 100,000 psi tank at that. Will the finished product have a pump in which it packs just air it for the next burst? Maybe for additional thrust for you 1 second 0-60. But there is nothing flying here

1

u/hiscapness 52m ago

This car will never see the light of day. The fan-based one, maybe. But likely not unless they can control the backwash of debris that will be shooting out of it. Per usual TSLA stock-pump nonsense, the roadster reservation page clearly states that the car may never be delivered. All Elon being Elon nonsense.

1

u/SeaworthinessSome454 42m ago

I disagree that people are bad drivers. As a species, we’re pretty incredible drivers. We get within 2-3 feet of a potentially life ending crash all the time on a 2 lane road and it virtually never occurs.

1

u/Icy_Fish_2154 36m ago

This is a car without flying capacity it can just fall, with style.

It's a safety feature, only deployed in a crash where the car becomes airborne, it will land softly, on it's "feet".

[At least that's how they will argue it if they ever wanted to sell any, it doesn't exist, so this is like arguing about dragon parking at pubs]

1

u/Retr0scores 27m ago

If this is going to be the next roadster look then it makes sense for them to use this one off as a marketing thing and not an actual production option. But also it’s probably fake so.

Just a marketing thing.

1

u/CastIronStyrofoam 26m ago

Emphasizing the wrong “to” is hilarious

1

u/BarryMcKokinor 3h ago

Why wouldn’t flight mode not be like FSD and you can’t control it ? The software engineers the path

7

u/musomania 3h ago

Because Tesla won't take the liability for that.

2

u/Cereal_Bandit 3h ago

That and you can probably get 15 seconds of sustained flight, tops, out of the tank's capacity

1

u/Darromear 2h ago

Because FSD works off of cameras, not LIDAR, and the spray from the jets will blind the car and everyone around it for 20 feet

1

u/thxby 2h ago

They already have companies working on and building self flying Air taxis, Wisk Aero is a Boeing backed start up, Chinese are doing it already with E hung. They are not rocket propelled tho which I don't think anyone really wants on the roads anyway.

1

u/BarryMcKokinor 2h ago

I’m not talking about Tesla specifically really. So many anti Tesla comments are jokes about idiots yeeting into an overpass but I sincerely believe that any future land and air car humanity produces in its always innovating DNA will be autopilot and connected to the IoT infrastructure.

0

u/j450n_dude 3h ago

If we ever do have flying cars, they will most certainly be AI-controlled. Allowing anyone to casually control them would be insane chaos.

0

u/AmericanCitizenry 3h ago

You're being too logical and not being realistic that you live in a dystopian society, and the only people who need this are cops, army, and black market.

In the immediate it's a stock booster, make 789 billion dollars, and in 5 years make another 300b selling every police department in the USA enough to make the impression even more dystopian.

You on board now?

1

u/flopisit32 3h ago

There are numerous reasons why none of that is ever gonna happen.

1

u/AmericanCitizenry 3h ago

A dystopian society?

Have you looked out you window?

July 1969, Neil Armstrong walks on the moon.

Random American: "Wait, hol up. This can't be real... Ain't nobody gonna fly into space in a metal can, get dressed up in a white monkey suit and walk around on the moon picking up cheese. You gotta be dumb to think this is a real thing!"

Americans, because they live in a McDonalds/Starbucks-themed alternate reality, don't understand anything that is not made for mass consumption.
