Kathy gets the check at the restaurant right for the group when we definitely didn't order the extra round of martinis. They want to charge mandatory tip and service charge? Not on Kathy's watch.

50

u/angrydeuce 1h ago

They want to charge mandatory tip and service charge? Not on Kathy's watch.

You know how you read something so relatable that you're like "is this someone I know personally?" Im having one of those moments lol.

I am the nephew of an Aunt Kathy. I have witnessed Aunt Kathy hone in on some shady restaurant shenanigans on the check of a group meal more than once. Aunt Kathy will line those empty bottles of wine up right across the table and make the manager count out loud together with her and ask where the extra 2 on the check went and will not budge until those bottles are off that damn check. Aunt Kathy will make a scene. Aunt Kathy does not give a single fuck. Aunt Kathy has raised three kids not to mention her goddamn husband and all her siblings and her parents and she is not suffering any bullshit. She's not merely a mom, she's the mom, the mother of all mothers, and god help you if you don't play her straight and try to fuck around.

I love aunt Kathy! Im also terrified of aunt Kathy, but Im glad she's on my team lmao.

No one commenting on my lady throwing out a “little girl I got eight kids…” to the whining thief

152

u/The-Wind-It-Howls 1h ago

Yeah the tactic of screaming like a banshee is enough to have 95% of tourists/people let go, even when they’ve been clearly wronged. They’re in a foreign country, they don’t know the customs and rules or how the crowd will react, especially in a place where pickpocketing is common and police basically don’t give a shit.

Good for her and fuck these pickpocketing scum. Wonder if it worked out for her or what transpired .

68

u/The_VideoGame_Lawyer 1h ago

As much as it sounds good to get revenge on a pickpocket, as a grown man, I'd absolutely let go as soon as this younger girl started wailing like a banshee and screaming for help to the crowd. I think maybe this mom can socially get away with things that maybe many grown men couldn't.

59

u/ScreamSmart 1h ago

That's exactly why the pickpockets are women. A younger man would be punted by every available passerby if caught.

18

u/Typical2sday 1h ago

Yeah the kid is lucky she didn't get spanked. You know a lady with that many kids doesn't gentle parent. 😄

100

u/TheRedIguana 2h ago

Adjustments were made to her parenting based on what worked and what didnt. What you see is the result of much trial and error. Don't blame the Kathy, blame the game.

22

u/internal_l0gging 2h ago

9h I don't judge her. I had to figure out what worked best with my two kids too. They laughed when I'd gentle parent them into time out so adjustments were made. 🤷

15

u/Sehrli_Magic 1h ago

gentle parenting is for gentle kids....when i realised i am trying to talk while someone is giving me slaps left and right, we transitioned to more of a "real world prep" and in real word, people hit ya back. slapping stopped real fast, who would have thought 🤔 (and no i did not smack crap out of my kids. but slapping me in the face resulted in their fingers getting a corrective slap. the sheer shock of me daring to do it was more than enough, no need to actually hurt)

7

u/Nemphiz 1h ago

Your second kid will usually teach that to you. I didn't believe in the whole 2nd child thing til we got Lucifer over here. He's either going to become one of humanities greatest assets or it's destroyer. We'll see.

7

u/Sehrli_Magic 1h ago

yeah...i got my first and was very judgy of other parents. cuz it felt like i am nailing it and how are others just not capable to do this and that? i admit it made me quite cocky. birth was also easy (all natural) like i was just tired and wanted 5 min to take quick nap but otherwise, at once when he was out i laughed "see ya next year" at the midwife. said i want big family. like 8-11 kids type of family..... got my second. regreted it since before she was even born, birth was torture and my husband didnt dare to look at me cuz he was scared i will murder him. i very clearly yelled "never again" and post partum was TORTURE. felt like i kept giving birth for 5 days after -.- and babygirl has been humbling me ever since. i now admit i know NOTHING about parenting, i do NOT "got it" and i apologise to every parent i judged, it is not as simple as my boy made it seem 😭 S.O.S

I think the full story was that a group of teenagers crowded the family on a narrow bridge as a distraction and the purse was stolen out of her backpack. They managed to track it down by tracing her AirPods that were still in the bag. They had noticed these two gals earlier and when they saw them again at the AirPod location, they knew it was them.

185

u/hstmqrqe 2h ago

And the lady forced the girl to call her associates who she had already handed the items to and for them to bring them back? Is this the same incident?

24

u/Vindicativa 1h ago

They still had the audacity to smack Kathy upside the head with her own stolen purse containing a metal water bottle!? Are you kidding? Poor woman had to go get stitches.

8

u/DogCold5505 1h ago

10

u/SkamyBoy 37m ago

The article says they got released on bail 2 days later. Doesn't seem like justice was done, they can go back on the streets to continue pickpocketing.

174

u/Cold-Ad-1978 2h ago

I caught pick-pocketer in Rome and held onto her until police came. She pulled my crappy “gold” timex off my wrist and I was pissed. This was two days into my semester abroad and I was traveling alone at 20. The cops rounded up about 6 of them and we all got into their van and went to the police station, afterwards, the policemen all wanted to come visit me in Florence. It was bizarre and I don’t get to tell the story often. Also, got my watch back!

33

u/PurpleCosmos4 2h ago

I was wondering if this woman would get in trouble for laying hands on the pickpocket, even though she was the victim.

Same with the cups and ball scam, all the same groups every day. Even IF the police does something they get released the same day.

5

u/sandwichcandy 53m ago

It’s wild to me that those cup and ball people still get suckers when it was famously a scam when I was a kid 30 years ago. I spent 10 days in Rome this year and they were working people outside of my Airbnb every night.

  • The Scuffle: During the struggle, one of the pickpockets swung a metal water bottle (stolen from the bag) and hit the mother in the head, leaving a large gash and a black eye that required hospital stitches.
  • The Outcome: Local police and their Airbnb host intervened. The teenage girls were arrested, and her passport and credit cards were recovered, though the cash and AirPods were not.

I remember when I was in Cambodian this French guy was talking to me I nodded a bit and moved to the bar. I felt a tug on my pocket and the same guy was trying to take my wallet.

A threw a punch and we got broken up quickly.
I was there with friends, I managed to find one of girls with us and I told her some French guy tried to rob me. She said where and when we turned around he had his hand in one of the other girls, we were with, handbag. So fight two kicked off but my friends were close this time so we managed to get some footwork in.

The bar staff were really nice, there wasn’t a bouncer, the women at the bar asked us to stop because the police would have to come.

I still see his face when I tell this story. Fuck this guy.

189

u/theImplication69 2h ago

Catching a pickpocket should legally entitle you to collecting whatever they have on them. Take 100 bucks from me? I should be entitled to any valuables currently on your person.

When I was straight out of highschool I had saved enough money for a trip. Went to Barcelona. Gotta budget for my last 2 days stolen from me by a pickpocket. I know exactly who it was, a group of 3 ladies working together who successfully confused and distracted me. I cornered 2 of them and was trying to get police to come to no success. Ended up getting away. Wish I had just took her purse cause clearly the police weren’t even around

63

u/Whole_Mongoose1854 3h ago

Part of what lets them get away with this is most people don’t want to roll the dice on a justice system in a foreign country they aren’t familiar with. It’s also why they tend not to target locals.

35

I had a pickpocket try to get into my backpack on a train in Copenhagen last year. I was watching him through a reflection on the window I was standing next to, and when he started to open my zipper I turned around and went off on him. I cornered him and just yelled at him. I was at least 6" taller than him, twice his size, and I know how to project my voice, he was fucking trembling. If he had put his hands on me I was fully prepared to smash him into the ground. He ran off the train at the next stop so fucking fast, and the people on the train looked at me like I was the asshole.

16

u/Binji_the_dog 2h ago

Being loud in public in Northern Europe is one of the most heinous offenses imaginable. In Germany you can even get fined for being too loud in your own home on Sunday.

16

u/DirtyRoller 2h ago

Yeah I know that, I generally do a good job of not offending locals when I travel, but I can't tolerate thieves. I worked in retail loss prevention and security for a long time, but I was rarely bothered by it, because it's hard to feel bad for a multi billion dollar company. Stealing directly from hard working people is a different story though, that absolutely infuriates me.

During the France Olympics, the police were getting mad at American tourists fighting pick pockets. If memory is correct, the law is similar to Italy where you cannot pursue, or physical contact.

37

u/ThanosSnapsSlimJims 2h ago

I'd be ignoring it and getting my stuff back.

27

u/RealMccoy13x 2h ago

Well, that is exactly what happened. You cannot convince an American to sit idly and not chase and fight a person stealing items. I think it is more of a shock that the law is telling the victim they're wrong for trying to not become a victim.

Americans don't care about their own laws and rules. A famous quote from a WWII German officer: “One of the serious problems in planning the fight against American doctrine, is that the Americans do not read their manuals, nor do they feel any obligation to follow their doctrine.”

30

u/Significant-Hour4171 1h ago edited 1h ago

This is real. American operational flexibility was/is a major strength of the US military. When this isn't part of the military culture you get things like the start of Ukrainian full scale invasion, where commanders sent their Russian soldiers to their entirely predictable doom because they didn't have any authority to do anything different.

I saw this a lot online during the Olympics but never saw a source for it beyond American social media and never found any statements from French police or government about it.

31

u/ArctcMnkyBshLickr 2h ago

I’m Latino but born and raised in the us and was in France during the Olympics when someone tried to simultaneously scam my wife into “donating” to kids in Africa while also pickpocketing her. I was far from my wife so I couldn’t stop it before it started.

I quickly took the woman’s clipboard and bonked her husband on the head very very hard to the point where they got cops involved. Nothing happened and they let everyone go but the cops told me that Americans were causing so many issues by fighting back against pickpockets. So it happened enough times to these cops to get annoyed.

In most US cities these pick pockets would absolutely get stomped out by the general public. In the sunbelt cities these guys get killed and it’s not an exaggeration at all how desperately Americans hope to use their guns on criminals.

Yes typical pickpocketing scheme with 3 people. 2 pretty girls with a map asking questions and an experienced pickpocketer steals stuff while tourist is occupied with the girls.

The only thing that pickpocket found were these hands.

u/SEKI19 2h ago

Italy has been this way forever. Happened to me when backpacking Europe 20 years ago. Had to grab the guy by the neck to get my wallet back. Dude pulls out 2 other wallets before finding mine. Wish I would have grabbed the other wallets and turned them into the police.

13

u/Hamilton-Beckett 2h ago

She’s lucky the woman only held her hair. I’d have to fight every instinct to not turn that piece of shit thief’s face into a pulp.

Can’t stand a fucking pickpocket. One of the lowest forms of thievery.

Good for the tourist.

11

u/bitpartmozart13 2h ago

That's a good Kathy. I had to knock out a thief who took my wallet and held him until the popo came.

12

u/DAS_FX 1h ago

Good. Fuck these pickpocket scum. To them, stealing a wallet it’s just a way to get a few bucks. To the tourist who has their wallet stolen – it can ruin an entire vacation and take weeks to sort out getting all the IDs and credit cards replaced

u/Brendan11204 3h ago

Certain parts of Italy are absolutely teeming with thieves. In an alternative reality I would be tempted to make little bombs that fit inside camera bags and then just sit around at Cafes with the bag hanging off the back. There would be a boom before my coffee is finished.

16

u/amzwC137 2h ago

Reminds me of a YouTuber, Mark Rober. He had a problem with people steeling packages off of porches, so he created a glitter bomb that went off when the package was opened. IIRC there was also a camera, tracker, and maybe some fart spray?

It was a while ago, but it was satisfying.

In big cities in Europe I carry important stuff in an interior pocket. I also deploy a decoy billfold in my back pocket that has nothing but a folded paper on which is printed "FUCK YOU". A dozen years ago Paris I got pushed out a train door at a stop just as the door was closing. The dude who pushed me picked my pocket as I stumbled out. He got my decoy wallet.

54

u/Laymanao 3h ago

I do not have any sympathy for these pickpocket targeting tourists. One of our Tour group had passport, wallet and hotel keycard taken. It ruined a supposed trip of a lifetime. As there was not consular services in that region, we had to courier temporary passports through three collection points over three days. An experience that was majorly the pits.

That stupid ass fanned map. Dead giveaway they're likely the culprits. They use these to shield the action of the theft.

The tourist was way more gentle than I would have been.

Weird how many are trying to justify or whatsboutism this as just a minor issue.

I fantasize about catching someone like that and instead of reporting them to authorities, I make them give me their shoes and I throw them in a river. The shame of walking home barefoot would be far worse than any petty crime punishment.

49

u/Doodiewater 2h ago

I dunno… I’d much rather lose my shoes than spend a day dealing with cops and have a record.

14

u/ChainsawBBQ 1h ago

They only fine them and let them go in minutes. Pick pocketing is the equivalent of jaywalking in Europe in their eyes. Taking their shoes and throwing them in the river is a more severe punishment than European police.

Used to be a headshop in my city that would punish thieves by giving them the choice: We call the cops or you give us your shoes.

They had half a dozen pairs on the top shelf above the checkout counter.

A girl like this tried to dip my bag when I was buying train tickets in Bologna and my mate shoulder barged her into kind of perspex window causing an almighty racket which sprung all the adults that “mind” these kids into action.

Wee fucked off, three vs ten or more wasn’t worth a fight.

I love that the woman in the video is holding her own and not being swarmed.

8

u/Representative-Pop72 2h ago

The difference between how we handle it is that they’re often pregnant and we can get charged if we physically attack them or restrain them. It’s different when you’re an American tourist

Damn, she got 8 kids, going to an Italian jail for murder would be a vacation for her

9

u/Sisoflex 2h ago

Back in the 70s in Italy, when I was 6, my Mum felt something and her keys were gone. She grabbed a young boy no older than me and he held the keys out apologetically and looked scared. She yelled "He took my keys!" and slapped him hard across his face. I'll never forget that.

Taking a person's passport while in another country is evil

7

u/ippleing 55m ago

Gypsies use young girls as pickpockets because they are less likely to get hurt physically if caught.

Once the women have kids they get moved on to beg on street corners.

The police for the most part are in on it, getting a small cut to look the other way.

Downvote me all you want, is not going to change these facts.

26

u/poop19907643 2h ago

That was my favorite story of the Paris Olympics. The pickpockets weren't prepared for American-style justice.

I do not understand the negative judgement from locals in Europe when it comes to this stuff. The tsk tsk stuff.

If they really don't care when it happens to them ok but are they not putting themselves in the place of someone thousands of miles away from home?  Getting pickpocketed like that can cause major major problems for an American tourist or anyone tourist very far from home that worked hard and saved up for that trip.  Where is the empathy for the victim?  The victim that also brings money to spend into your country and is there to appreciate your country.

There was a report about a year ago that the Italian specifically warned the pickpockets about not targeting Americans because it was dangerous as “they won’t put up with it”!

28

u/leeloocal 2h ago

My dad legit threw a potential pick pocket off the Metro in Paris and told the people who were tsking to shove it. He does not swear and is not a violent man, but he was PISSED.

I never had an issue with pickpockets in Italy. The closest thing was down an alley a couple of locals starts yelling pickpocket! Pickpocket! at someone and a bunch of people helped get the clutch back for some woman. Seems like the locals don’t like it either.

As an American, most of our cities don’t have rampant pickpockets. They’re from every state, but they all work in Washington DC.
