"Vote with your wallet" and other liberal arguments that need addressing

With the announcement of the price increase on nintendo games which has been very sad news for many of us, it's been frustrating to see liberal arguments that shift the blame on consumers posted on this sub.

I am a random idiot that doesn't really understand economics or speak english but i'll try my best to come across and explain to some of you all, because it seems capitalist ideology has collectively fried our brains to the point where people that actively seek to join an anti-capitalist sub to discuss games genuinely believe they can individually affect the market by consuming. I'm gonna start with the liberal theory, then go to a more marxist critique i guess. I feel a bit bad doing this because i am not qualified for the former or the later, but i feel like people don't realize the implications of what they are saying so it's worth putting out the very basics and apply some criticism to common gamer arguments.

Free market according to liberals:

According to liberal economics, the free market is a decentralized, democratic mechanism where quantities and prices of goods produced reflect the needs of society, through the interaction of the laws of supply and demand. What this means is, producers set a price and consumers make a choice according to their subjective preferences, which in turn causes producers to raise or lower the price. So in the case of Nintendo, Miyamoto says games will cost 80 dollars and it's up to the consumers to determine if this price is justified by "voting with their wallets".

If enough people don't buy, Miyamoto will respond by lowering the price. And if the price doesn’t change, this means that the price accurately reflects how the people value nintendo games, and also that the outcome is efficient, which means basically that no resouces are wasted and we have the ideal combination of quanity and price, where incidentally needs are met in the best possible way. You could go ahead and force nintendo to sell their games cheaper via some kind of gamer law for example, but according to liberal economics this would ruin the whole thing and people's needs wouldn't actually be met, instead nintendo would make less games because they'd have less incentive to make them and we'd all get less as a result.

Free market according to people that don't believe in invisible hands:

Ok so how it actually works is, there are literally three corporations in the console market. They set the price that they think will bring them more profit between them,. They don't even have to talk to each other and decide (it's supposed to be illegal) because it's an oligopoly where price hikes are matched and price cuts are ignored. But also of course they talk to each other.

Now because it's an oligopoly, it's not like there are many choices from the consumer side. If you have some money for entertainment and want to get into console gaming, you can get a playstation or an xbox or a nintendo. Now games will cost 70 to 80 dollars. The question is, can you afford games? If you can and you want to play new games, you are not going to be happy about the new prices but you are gonna pay because you don't really have a choice other than abstaining, which on an individual level also doesn't do anything. If you can't afford the new prices, and i'm genuinely sorry to say, you won't get the new games and there's nothing you can do about it on an individual level. Other, richer people will and you won't. For many people that can afford it to a degree, they will just buy less games.

"ok ok so i am not buying/ i am buying less but by doing so i have voted with my wallet so i have the power to affect prices", nope. Nintendo doesn't care about whether the needs of the people that can't afford games are met, as long as they'll make money from people that can afford it. Which they most likely can do because it's an oligopoly. People that buy Nintendo games will buy the next Nintendo system and mario kart, people that buy playstation will buy playstation 5 and horizon or whatever. They will not be happy about the changes, they will not have consented to anything and more importantly they will not be the ones to blame. If i had the money i'd go out and get a ps5 right now, and so would everyone else.

More broadly, prices aren't really set according to demand but by the logic of capital accumulation and profit maximization. Nintendo makes more and more money and uses the money to make more and more money, until one day the whole thing crashes. That's the very basic marxist idea.

Now liberals will tell you that, yeah, some of what i said is true and that nintendo does have the power to get away with a lot of things as a result of their position, but that's because the competition isn't working effectively. So the idea is, there should have been many options for us that do give us power to affect prices to our liking but distortions in the market have created an oligopoly, probably unironically the state is to blame and more deregulation will solve it, like firing people more easily for example or lowering minimum wage.

However, like the bearded man from assasin's creed syndicate predicted, every meaningful market is becoming more and more oligopolistic under capitalism and that's by design. Bigger corporations are allowed to produce cheaper because of scale economies, smaller ones can't compete with them and gradually we have a few very powerful corporations controlling every key market. From tech and gaming to food, media, and healthcare, a small number of giant corporations increasingly dominate each sector. Capitalist competition doesn’t lead to permanent diversity of choices, it leads to concentration of power.

The free market is a tool for the accumulation of wealth and gradually creates more and more inequality. Elon Musk is going to become a TRILLIONAIRE. Can you grasp what i am saying? This is going to happen. And that's how capitalism works. And is this viable you say? No it's not. Capitalism crashes every few years, again like the Kirby antagonist said it would. The Nintendos of the world eventually make more stuff than people will buy, then people don't buy them, then they fire everyone, then no one buys anything and it's a crisis and the states give money to the banks to save capitalism. This has happened before and it will happen again and in the meantime those of us that can afford to game after work will and those that can't won't. And most people won't.

That's the basic idea, please feel free to add any additions or corrections. And please don't blame eachother on the sub. It's not on the consumers that nintendo is able to get away with this, it's a systemic problem that extends to every aspect of our life.

And by the way, i don't have time to write anymore but the inflation argument is also corporate propaganda. Briefly, there are two kinds of inflation, cost push inflation and demand pull inflation. Nintendo here is claiming cost push inflation: because of, for example, US tariffs, they have higher costs and so to cover them they need to raise prices. But Nintendo and every Nintendo is out there making record profits. So rather than thinking of poor Nintendo that won't be able to make even more profits, consider that it is Nintendo that could take a hit from the tariffs rather than the consumer. They could make less and prices could stay the same and Timmy would get Donkey Kong for Christmas. But that's not what's going to happen. Alright i'm done.

casual game talk Non-cringe WoW Youtube creators?

I'm considering getting into WoW Forever. I looked up some content about it and my YT homepage is now flooded with WoW creators. I know you can throw a rock and hit a WoW content creator rn, but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations of anybody making WoW content that is at least somewhat left-wing (perhaps someone hunting Asmongold's guild and the like) and doesn't do too much cringey clickbait slop?

Not just looking for someone reading theory in Orgrimmar or anything (but ofc would be sick if that exists) but at the very least someone who isn't obviously fascist or lib'd up.

Left wing videogames Fallout 1 is (Still) Brilliant Spoiler

Post image
55 Upvotes

Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game is a CRPG released in 1997 by Interplay. This game is far before my time but I recently played it due to my love for New Vegas, and now I can appreciate this game even more, because now I see exactly why new Vegas is so good.

Tim Cain, one of the lead co creators of Fallout 1 and who later worked on fallout 2 to some extent, stated that fallout 1 was never meant to be a critique of capitalism. Some critics and people who play fallout 1 will say that's proof fallout 1 is not a critique of capitalism, but I'd simply disagree with that because art is subjective and meant to invoke discussion and interpretation. Though I don't really like to pull this card, Tim Cain has actually said that your interpretation of art can't be wrong, and by extension, neither can your interpretation of his art. So before I'm asked, yes, my interpretation of this game isn't wrong but it isn't right either, I suppose. If you interpret this game as being critical of socialism and if you believe this game is undeniable proof that a fascist dystopia is the ideal outlook for the wasteland, then I'd personally think you're severely misguided, but you do you I suppose.

There's a lot I can praise about fallout 1, but because this is a socialist subreddit, I'll mainly be talking about the story and decision making aspects of the game in this post. I still love diplomacy, fighting, and stealth mechanics, but we will be talking about fallout 1's story today. Fallout 1 has a straightforward setting; the world was nuked into the apocalypse from a war by China and the United States, and many of the last remaining humans hid in underground vault complexes. You have lived all your life in this vault, but for the very first time, you have to leave. The overseer (basically the head of the vault) believes you're the only person in the vault capable of taking on the wasteland to search for a water chip, a device which recycles and purifies the vault water supply. The vault water chip broke, and the overseer believes you have 150 days until the vault dies from dehydration. And thus, you're handed a gun, a knife, and some healing medical supplies out into the world you've never seen before.

When I play fallout 1, I see a critique of capitalism in the game's atmosphere. To those who didn't know; fallout 1 very famously has a bleak, isolating, and outright disturbing and dreadful atmosphere. Dozens of the NPCs you speak with are outright depressed, traumatized, and/or deeply pessimistic. Let's use Shady Sands as an example; the first community you'll visit in fallout 1. Shady Sands advertises itself as a peaceful community, and it is pretty peaceful. There's very little weaponry around and you're asked to put your gun away upon entrance. It's a small community of peasants with a town leader and doctor. Although peaceful, there's a clear hierarchy within shady sands. When you pickpocket people in the town, they typically only have five or six caps (the games currency) at most, but lots of them actually don't have anything. Meanwhile, almost all the money and resources rest with the town's leader. So there's a clear financial hierarchy even within this community, and the doctor charges patients. Perhaps I'm over analysing but there is a clear hierarchy here where hierarchs have most of the money and influence over the community. I can say that confidently because all the quests and decisions that impact the community are given to you by the leader and people with money.

Shady Sands isn't the best example though. In fallout 1, The Hub is a major city where dozens of characters live. In this city, there are a select few business owners who hold a lot of resources and money while the majority of people you see around are poor and rely on drugs and drug trade to survive, both literally and financially. Gangs of thieves thrive across the city as well, and obviously they steal for the money that that hierarchs took from them. Its perhaps important to clarify that the hierarchs are not necessarily entrepreneurs though; the business owners across the city have their own guards and employees they pay. I mention that because it's not like anyone can just start a business; only in the right wing libertarian utopian is that possible. It's a mirror of how capitalism works in our real life; hierarchs keep the bulk of the money for themselves while the majority beneath them suffer.

Fallout 1 doesn't end there though. After you find your water chip and return to the vault, the games second half begins. The 150 day time limit is lifted, but the overseer informs you that super mutants are posing a threat to the vault and its existence, so now you gotta stop the mutants. Then you can finally return to the vault once and for all. The super mutant army is led by a character simply known as The Master. He's the games primary antagonist and widely considered one the greatest (ie, most interesting) antagonists in the fallout series. When you finally confront him, you can fight him, convince him to take his own life by proving his plan isn't sustainable, or stealthing your way through the lair and blowing it up. But what was The Master doing? The Master was creating super mutants by capturing humans and turning them into mutants. When you confront him, you can ask him about his rationale and why he's doing this. He proceeds to explain that, so long as there are differences, humanity and the wasteland cannot sustain itself. Therefore according to him, he needs everyone to be a super mutant so everyone can be the exact same and obey him.

The Masters plan isn't identical, but very similar to various far right or fascist sentiments currently and historically. Far right and imperialist leaders have historically been driven by a desire for homogeneity. Adolf Hitler wanted everyone to be ethnically homogenous in Germany, and Francisco Franco wanted everyone to be culturally and religiously homogenous in Spain. The Master wants everyone to be the same literal race in the wasteland, and all pursued their goals violently. The Masters goal, also like far right leaders, isn't based in reality and oversimplifies a highly complex situation for his own benefit.

The most egalitarian and socialist leaning faction in fallout 1 are the followers of the apocalypse. And they're doing fairly well, though it's not to say they don't have their problems. They're egalitarian and humanitarian and value the equal exchange of knowledge, much like socialism advocates. The most nationalist-esque group in fallout 1 is The Master and the cathedral, which are condemned by the followers for The Masters deeply violent and supremacist means of achieving what he believes to be peace. It's an interesting parallel to reality that the most socialist resembling faction is the one to condemn the fascist resembling one.

Fallout 2 and New Vegas are games that I believe to be much stronger critiques of captialism because you see directly how bad the situations for employees, citizens, peasants, farmers, workers, and sex workers are in these games. In fallout 1 it's more so something that's shown to you and not told, but it's clear no matter where you are how badly capitalism has impacted these poor people across the wasteland.

Title: I'm making TRUTH NEWS, a newspaper editor game set in a totalitarian state

I'm working on a game called TRUTH NEWS. You edit articles, censor photos, and try to keep four stats in check: Ministry Trust, Circulation, Editorial Loyalty, and Budget.

Keep the Ministry happy, and your readers might lose interest. Tell the truth, and you could get into trouble. Sometimes there's just no good option.

The idea came from something I witnessed in college, when censorship in our student newspaper wasn't applied equally. It stuck with me, and I wanted to explore that kind of pressure through a game.

I'd love to hear what you think. Would you play it?

You run Plant 7 for Hedy Motors. You hire workers, buy robots, increase productivity, and start to make cars faster. Then Hedy central starts doing capitalism -- they raise the transfer price, adds a "reinvestment levy," or claim that "the market" means they need to take more.

As cars per minute go up, profit per car goes down. If you just keep optimizing, it falls from about $6,100 a car to under $1,000.

You find out Plant 2 got the exact same letter. From there it's petitions, an advisory seat, a federation with the other plants, and finally buying Plant 7 out as a co-op. The second half is actually running it: the members vote on a wage contract, you open your own dealerships, and you free the sister plants one at a time while Hedy tries to starve you out.

One thing I learned after launch: in the first 147 runs, nobody lost. Hedy never really landed a hit, which kind of undercut the whole point. So this week Hedy started fighting back the way a real company would, with the kind of underhanded tactics we've come to know and love.

It runs in the browser, no account needed, about half an hour to finish.

Play it here: https://permadeathmedia.com/hedy-plant/?ref=reddit-socialistgaming

I'm currently working on the next act of the game, which includes your growing cooperative venture branching out into other industries, getting hit by big corporate opposition, and recruiting other existing shops into the collective.

I'd really like to hear from people here whether the politics land or feel preachy, and what Hedy should do to you that I haven't thought of yet.

Mafia 3 whitewashing of the Vietnam war (removed from r/MafiaTheGame)

Thumbnail

For those unfamiliar, the first text of the game is a warning claiming that this narrative depicts unsanitized reality of civil rights era America, and admittedly it doesn't pull punches when it comes to domestic racism, yet the Vietnam war is treated as a mere set dressing, plot device to emphasize the protagonist's 'competence and valor' as presented in the first cutscene.

10 minutes into the game Lincoln (the black protagonist) is asked about his worst experience in Vietnam, and his answer is: during a civilian evacuation a mother chooses to throw her baby into a lake (that is then saved by soldiers) in order to bring a pig on board, he rationalizes her action by claiming life is cheap there. Why would a black dissident in 60s America regurgitate the sleazy propaganda of those who sent him to die is beyond me.

Despite the trauma he endured as a result of an imperialist war and the persistent discrimination at home by the same warmongers, Lincoln never reflects on how the two share the same social roots. His PTSD ends up being treated as a badge of honor rather than a potentially revolutionary motive, war is decontextualized and accepted as a given, his experience as a necessary sacrifice. Well, black GIs who were disproportionately effected by the draft and made a bulk of frontline casualties only to return to poverty and segregation did in fact connect the two, and took action that bolstered the civil rights and antiwar movement. Lincoln's indifference as their stand-in does a disservice to their dignity and struggle.

Glorifying war in a video game? More news at 9. This wouldn't be a complaint of mine if the game didn't ask you to take it seriously by claiming to critically portray American history and politics.
