i’ve been gaming on wifi for over a decade. is it better than ethernet? no. is it good enough? for most people, probably.
23
u/Aggressive-Farm-8037 Jul 18 '26

u/Brokenlynx7 Jul 18 '26
Sure in many types of games it’s an acceptable compromise the game can account for.
In fighting games, where every input is measured by the frame WiFi players can be a nuisance. WiFi inconsistency is inherent to wireless and happens for multiple reasons.
If someone plays fighting games and they can use Ethernet, they absolutely should use Ethernet.
7
u/kwanye_west Jul 18 '26
unless you have a crappy router from more than 2 decades ago, wifi is more than enough for most people even on competitive titles. maybe if you’re the top 10-20% of players you’ll need ethernet, otherwise the average gamer wouldn’t even notice wifi from a decent router from a wired connection.
that being said, ethernet is the better option as i said earlier, but only if it’s an option. having ethernet for myself and many others would require some home reno work done to accommodate that and it’s simply not worth the cost.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (3)26
u/StepComplete1 Jul 18 '26
It's also completely circle-jerked and overblown, as PC players tend to do. Modern routers can absolutely handle even fighting games. It's not 2000 anymore where it's going to be a slideshow.
I played Street fighter on wifi for a year. Got all the usual rage-mail from salty people with all kinds of excuses for why they lost, but never once did anyone complain about the connection being laggy as a reason. Not once.

u/Dunkelz Jul 18 '26
People always blow it way out of proportion. You see it in all games, fighting, FPS like CS2/Valo, mobas like League, etc. Acting like their plat lobbies are going to be ruined by 1-2 extra milliseconds of latency.

So long as you don’t play competitively it wouldn’t matter.
But if you do, wifi is a major handicap. Most people can’t run lines in the modern world to their devices so it’s not a big deal.

Not a ton more on my PC but my PC obviously takes up way more space and ofc has a bit more connected to it and more USB and additional slots

You don't need any dongles to connect a Keyboard/Mouse via BT. Meaning, it's obvious what everybody is trying to say and in most cases BT is far away from ideal or even usable, but technically you only need a cable for power supply and your display to set up your PC.

While I do agree those subscriptions on consoles are awful, can we at least be honest about the pricing? That’s not how much it costs to access online there.

All you need on any computer is the power and video cable if it supports wifi and Bluetooth which any computer can either in the motherboard or by slotting in a $20 PCIe card if your PC is from 2008 and doesn't have it already

No where in the tweet does he say it's something revolutionary. Are we really just upset because people are happy about something that doesn't meet our standards of happiness?

Why the HDDs rack? If it’s for long-term storage, why not get a dedicated NAS?
3
u/Monk_The_Banana_Scug Jul 18 '26
It's a homemade JBOD, it uses SAS cables, a 40 buck SAS card from Ebay, an acrylic frame and rubberised screws from AliExpress, plus a Noctua fan and a controller. Sata power comes from inside the PC and goes outside from the back. All in all it cost me like 150€ for the whole thing. The reason I didn't just get a NAS is that I normally use the files for seeding torrents, I never feel the need to look for files on my HDDs from far away, normally I put them in drive temporarily and then delete once on my phone. The entire rack plus HDD inside my PC is a total of like 34TB.
