No Man’s Sky really mastered the art of making you reinstall the game every few months.
292
u/Spir0rion Aug 26 '26
And then realizing it's good but it still doesn't do one thing really good and in depth...
...the reason you uninstalled in the first place.

u/InvidiousPlay Aug 26 '26
I went back to it after having ended up hating the release version, and being underwhelmed by the 2020 version.
They've added a lot of things, but ultimately it feels more like a long-running MMO: large amounts of things for veterans to do to kill time, not a lot of actual good gameplay or sense of there being any kind of natural journey to follow in a new game.

Well… yeah. Tried frigate, send fleet to tasks. What, it’s Tribal Wars style mechanic? Wait for N hours until it finishes? Oh, ok… Then tried colony. Didn’t understand then point of it. Tried to farm resources, but for what?
Most sandbox games have some goal you can achieve, at least Minecraft has dragon to kill. For me, NMS has nothing to achieve. It’s a nice game to try some exploration and space flying, setup some farm, but this doesn’t end in anything.→ More replies (1)34

I just uninstall because I need space for the next game I’m playing. There are very few main roster games I have that always stay loaded up lol

u/tomorrow_comes Aug 26 '26
I enjoyed it for 15-20 hours while the gameplay was still novel to me. But at one point I sat there thinking about all the different things I could do - at this point there are so many systems, etc which is cool. Made a corvette and learned to farm some resources with it. Cool. Did some main quests - eh. One day I realized that for me, it all felt so pointless. What was I building towards? It’s just a big set of disjointed systems and upgrade trees, but ultimately the gameplay itself is very shallow.
Cool I guess if you just like the sandbox, the vibes, discovering planets, and progressing gear. I admire what they’ve done with the game and how much there is to do. But yeah, it’s just not for me.

Once a year I start thinking about the aesthetics of No Man's Sky, can't get them out of my head, reinstall the game, fire it up... and then I mine some minerals, scan a couple of things, fly around for a bit, and uninstall.
Then I just go and look at some cool old sci-fi paperback covers.
Y'know I would love for No Man's Sky to almost be a slick Roblox, where other people can make their own games and stories within the world that's been laid down. A little five-hour sci-fi political story that all takes place in one star system, a siege on a space station, mediating a war between two planets, whatever. I know there's mods but it doesn't seem to be working out.

I remember hearing they dropped the ball when the game released then they actually did give all the updates they promised, I've been looking for another space game to play after outer wilds and wanted to ask if no man's sky is worth it. The genre of game doesn't matter to me as long as it's a good game lol
6
u/TheTerrasque Aug 27 '26
NMS is fine now, even good, but it feels like they just make the puddle wider and wider, while still being super shallow.
12
u/AlexStrike1 Aug 26 '26
The amount of updates and fixes easily overcompensates for god awful release of the game, even though the devs still don't feel like they payed off their "sins"
If you are interested in the game, you for sure will get enough content to satify your needs for the price you'll pay(especially if the game will be on sale)

The amount of updates and fixes easily overcompensates for god awful release of the game, even though the devs still don't feel like they payed off their "sins"
Hearing this line over and over again makes it really hard to talk about the game honestly, because even the most valid criticism is met with "the devs are so wholesome they truly care they updated their game!".
It's not just here either, every review on Steam, Youtube and every other platform goes on and on about how the developers 'truly redeemed themselves' and it's like that's great but can we actually hear about the gameplay for 5 seconds?
6
u/P1ka- Aug 26 '26
Most updates feel like they dont make the game systems deeper, just wider
Like i feel if you still want what they promised in the initial marketing you are probably still going to be dissapointed
But if ya liked the initial state and like having more things to do, then the updates are nice

u/Finite_Universe Aug 26 '26
People still criticize NMS. The most common (valid) criticism is probably the lack of real depth to any of its systems and mechanics. But naturally that is greatly overshadowed by the sheer breadth of the game.
I’ve only just started my journey with 20 hours invested and it feels like I’ve barely scratched the surface. I can see how this is one of those games where you really get out of it what you’re willing to put in. So not going to be for everyone.
2
u/JamesGray Aug 26 '26
I think a big part of it is that it's just a huge sandbox game with a ton of stuff to do. Lots of people will not like it or get bored quickly, but it's not usually gonna make someone really angry and hate the game, they're just gonna lose interest and move on. But the people who do like it have such an obscene amount of content that is all free with the base game purchase to go through, so they tend to gush about it a lot.
7
u/Pijany_Matematyk767 Aug 26 '26
>that is all free with the base game purchase

14
u/MrBootylove Aug 26 '26
This might just be cope on my part but I'm a bit hopeful that this remaster might improve performance a bit. I say this because the current Enhanced Edition could use a bit of optimization, and in my experience it actually is a little bit harder to run than Cyberpunk. Hopefully a more thoughtful implementation of RT features could alleviate that a bit, but we'll see.
→ More replies (1)6
u/quarternelsonn Aug 26 '26
I think this is a big reason for it being called remastered and not just another update to enhanced. They said something earlier this year about further optimizations coming to the Witcher 3 and I don’t think anything meaningful was changed leading up to this announcement

19
u/DumpsterFire11 Aug 26 '26
I am a big Witcher 3 fan and I agree that the combat was lackluster and mediocre. However, I’m weird and I actually like plots and stories, and the world building in Witcher 3 along with its stories was more than enough for me to get hooked. I will always highly recommended the game for its ambiance alone.
But I will fully concede that the combat isn’t anything too special and is very repetitive mechanically.
18
u/Beardofella Aug 26 '26
Lacklustre and mediocre ?
Am I the only one that played Witcher 2 and was blown away by how good the combat was in the 3rd one ?
( at the time )
8
u/cahir11 Aug 26 '26
Honestly, yeah. I love most things Witcher-related (just look at my username lol) but even at the time people were ragging on TW3 for its combat and whenever I replay it I always have a combat mod installed.
2
u/Beardofella Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
I feel if you play an “old” game you have to account for the standards back then and also how it evolved from the previous instalment (if there was one).
Like if I picked up GTA: Vice city right now I know the gunplay would drive me a bit mad and same for the cars.
Same for Mass Effect 1 and the Mako (if you know you know).
Saying this having sunk an ungodly amount of hours in both of those games back when they came out ( I am talking about 10 play throughs for ME with a different class/alignment each run). The best example I have for this is GTA5: I played it for the first time a good 10 years after it came out and I hated the gunplay when I started, it felt clunky / not great. Why ? It had been 10 years since it came out and in the meantime I had played more recent games that had set a newer and better standard of what I considered “good/fun”.
Once I got over that I had fun and finished the game, but I genuinely believe some iconic games are of their time and you kind of have to be there.Edit: typos

The most I ever felt this was trying to play Goldeneye/Perfect Dark again. I played those two so much when I was a kid. I tried playing like a year or two ago and it's unplayable. There just have been so many advancements to controllers and control schemes that without an overhaul it's just impossible to play. STALKER is up there too if you don't mod it. And New Vegas is passable but the walking and jogging speed are just way too slow.

u/prnthrwaway55 Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
I've been a lifelong Witcher fan (back from 90s, when I was a fan of the books), and I played W1 and W2 with great pleasure.
Witcher 3 was a masterpiece as a game on release. But it is a masterpiece DESPITE its combat, its progression, its loot system and, sadly, even its plot beyond the first chapter.
The combat was clunky and just poor, with cool moves gated needlessly beyond progression and the strikes simply being incorrectly distributed. Half of all skills were completely useless, with a handful being overpovered. The loot that wasn't part of a set was always bad and useless. The bosses were literally three identical Sauron-like elves in armor with forgettable names, plots and zero personal investment, and the White Cold was turned into a Mumbo-Jumbo magical planet killing device instead of simple climate change like in the books. And the bugs, who can forget them!
But man, the quests, the design, the vibe and the characters were so, so good that it overwhelmed everything.

The short-dodging mechanics, weaving in spells and getting the occasional execute animation could combine into really nice sequences, it was pretty good for 2015. Granted Bloodborne was out that year too, but I think witcher 3 was very under rated in this department.

It's kinda wild how much they fumbled the 2077 launch, and then they barely added anything to it and just fixed some bugs then made a paid DLC and suddenly everyone is acting like they're an amazing company and it's an amazing game again. I guess all the people who were annoyed at the launch stopped playing and talking about it, so all that's left is the superfans that are easily pleased.

Yesterday, CDPR announced The Witcher 3 Remaster, it will be a free update, not a standalone version of the game.
Now every owner of the base game has received the DLCs, "Blood and Wine" and "Hearts of Stone" for free.

u/heikici Aug 26 '26
Every other company on earth so far asked you to pay for Remaster.
CDPR upgraded the game many times, it wasn't too long ago they upgraded to "next gen" for free for a 10YO game (unheard of) and then just a couple years later they give free DLCs (the first two) to all players (digital and physical) AND free Remaster.Their competitor release Remaster for big bucks with no real upgrades (think of Horizon, The last of Us, Skyrim...)

Guild Wars released a remaster of the first game recently, and gave it to everyone for free.
Even one of your examples, when it launched, owners of Skyrim Legendary Edition on Steam received Special Edition for free.
Other way around but if you buy Bioshock 1 and 2 remastered, you get the originals for free too.
It has been done many times before and will be done many more times. Let's not pretend CDPR is the only company "good enough" to do it.

5
u/ibbbk Aug 26 '26
It's not p2w but if you don't spend money on it you'll struggle in the endgame a bit, as you won't be able to store as many items, which limits your crafting and such.
3
u/inbano Aug 26 '26
There is a (recommended) 1 time buy for the storing, right?
→ More replies (2)3
u/redhat_hatred Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
Yep, it’s like 30-60$ for some storage and ability to comfortably trade with others(you need paid storage to use it as your “shop” to sell stuff), and you are pretty much ready for game mode with multiplayer and trade (trade league), till (and including) the very endgame. I’d say it might be not enough for some of more challenging game modes like solo self found (ssf) if you play A LOT(you can’t trade with other players in that mode, so you need to accumulate lots of stuff for yourself rather then buy and sell on demand like in trade league, therefore you need more storage). And those purchases are forever and work in both poe1 and 2.
3
u/unaccountablemod Aug 26 '26
CDPR is edging its players to have an easier time to sell Witcher 4. They have an uphill battle to justify Ciri's existence as a Witcher, UE5 stutters, and whatever good will they lost after releasing Cyberpunk.

ctrl+shift+esc (or equivalents if you’re also not using an english keyboard) opens task manager i believe. then flip through the sidebar menus until you see multiple graph menus, then flip through there until you see whatever the equivalent to memory or ram is in the language your task manager is in. you might just be able to see the number from the side-graph though. powers of 2 are standard for ram (eg. 2gb 4gb 8gb 16gb)

Cyberpunk launched with problems. The ‘expert complain’ bros annihilated them and proclaimed the company would implode….
The game now is epic.
Cdpr still making things great years later.
It’s easy to continuously complain about something when you have no concept of reality. But worse is that after a while it becomes the normal thing to do. And complaining is the first and only thing you go to.
Yt has a lot of these type now.
It is very sad.

I mean, I am not trying to be cynical, but let's talk in terms of facts:
CDPR had a ton of goodwill, especially after Witcher 2, and they rode it almost flawlessly with The Witcher 3's release. CP2077 had so much demand, it had the chance of turning into a new GTA in terms of hype.
They dropped the ball really, really, really hard. They still haven't fully recovered.
They didn't recover CP2077 purely out of the goodness of their hearts, they had a lot invested and needed to recover that reputation.
CP2077's updates, and these new releases, are an attempt to do that. They pretty much could be considered part of their marketing budget. They need to build that goodwill so people don't hesitate to buy Witcher IV.
These updates are neither a miracle nor a gift. They are very much trying to recover from a blunder that still aches quite a bit for them.

TO BE FAIR there's near-zero chance Witcher 3 is going to get any sale now until the remaster drops on Sept 29. What is priced, is priced. And we dont know if the remaster itself costs more past that point.
All we know is that current owners of W3 before the remaster get it for free.
Basically this is kinda a loss on those who didnt jump onto W3 during the many years and many sales it dipped really low (like, I remember a 90% off one time), which, sorry bud :/

I really do appreciate learning developer not only acknowledges and fixes their mistakes, but also strives to improve their relationship with their fans afterwards as well.

CDPR REALLY wants me to buy Song of the Past DLC... They didn't have to convince me, I already have my wallet ready

So say I have a ps5. If I buy a used base game ps4 Witcher 3, I’ll get the free ps5 upgrade, the DLCs, and the remaster for free???

I’ve been considering replaying it and by gods I’m so excited to again. Maybe this time I’ll actually learn Gwent. Maybe.

The game once got a next-gen upgrade before. Now it gets remastered again. Just out of words.

Witcher 3 has been on my backlog for far too long. The new remaster is probably the push I need to actually play it finally.
