Steam Controller (2026) cant pair controller to slot 1

For some reason when i try to pair my controller to the puck and the steam machine internal they both always pair to the second slot and overwrite the previous pairing. Has anyone had a similar issue and found a solution or is this an issue with the latest firmware?

Mamy similar reports lately. Including one i made myself even i could do so before. Looks like a firmware bug. I guess we should wait for a fix

I will try later today with my normal puck. If it doesn't work I will write a "bug report" if I can't find one.

With one puck I can't use the other slot. I assume you have one puck paired, switch to the other slot and then try to pair right?

Good to see this is becoming more widespread so Steam has to respond. For awhile there it seemed like only a couple of people so it was going to get buried! But yes, I'm there with you with the same issue. No matter what I do, following instructions to the T, restarting steam between pairings, using Windows, Linux, steam OS whatever puck I pair overwrites Slot 1 R1 and doesn't write to slot 2 L1. Yes, I'm booting into slot 2 the power on sound is different.

My bet is there's a firmware bug as well. My guess is the firmware just write to slot 1 because I notice when pairing is done and I was booted into slot 2 the controller reboots. I can't remember if it does if I force a boot directly to slot 1.

That or it's a bug on plugging in a USB cable to forces it into slot 1 before you can click yes on the pair? Hard to tell

Have you checked for firmware update for both the puck and the controller? (Plug the controller in via USB)

The new fix turn off firmware also doesn't change this behavior.
