I think it's important to understand how this is rooted in race and class dynamics.
It also goes without saying that this isn't a new phenomenon, and it's not a matter of people using the term to try and belittle people. It's an expression of a deep desire that many people have to feel good about themselves.
And the only reason it's not just a matter of "the most hated man on earth," is because it's not a well-articulated, objective, universal truth.
