Anyone knows where we can watch the world amateur championship? it's happening this weekend no?

1

u/pheeze 4d ago

NHK World Japan removed the September 2026 videos as I was watching through them, does anyone know where I can watch the rest?

1

u/TezdingoUhuhuhuuuh 14d ago

I just watched my first sumo tournament, this years Grand Sumo. I don’t really know what to watch now, are there other tournaments? Where can I watch them? I’d prefer it to not be live. I just watched the matches on YouTube off of a Japanese news site that was posting them

1

u/StunningRelation5760 20d ago

My IPTV just removed all of the NHK channels from the service. I'll have to watch the condensed version on NHK - World.

u/FailedAccessMemory Enho 21d ago

Just be careful of giving links to people asking for where to watch link. They could easily be people working for CW enforcement from either the rights holder or a company hired by them. If possible check their profile and if it's a recent account that's usually a clue.

u/HearshotKDS Ura 21d ago

Haven’t seen this mentioned yet but Don Don Sumo is going to the matches this Basho and filming them with his own video (which I believe has historically been kosher with abema), he gets his video with overlay (obviously no commentary) up super quick and has been my go to for this Basho.

u/xpag406 22d ago

MidnightSumo got a copyright strike. Will no longer be streaming video during tournaments. End of an era.

2

u/Big-Humor-1343 21d ago

I havn't been watching MNS as I usualy need to watch after work so watch highlights instead, but it hurts on weekends when I am able to watch live. theres just nowhere to see it. :(

She's back. Abema copywrite struck her. Same thing just happened to Midnight.

-1

u/Disastrous_Acadia823 22d ago

Do you think Midnight will be back, I love watching the replays when I wake up.

It's basically free advertising because I don't really know or watch sumo but love watching it now. I wouldn't consume it without his stream.

3

u/HyperMarsupial 21d ago

Midnight has said tonight that he will comply with the strikes and will stop showing the bashos. For now he'll just provide commentary while directing people to watch elsewhere and transform the channel into a companion stream. He will still continue streaming amateur/corporate sumo.

9

u/dustblown 22d ago

Abeema or the JSA would be smart to make their own Twitch channel and provide the streams for free for Western audiences.

0

u/Kain292 Hoshoryu 22d ago

They don't know if it was Abema. The reasoning (at least for middy) is blank.

2

u/dustblown 22d ago

When you go to their pages it says "content removed at the request of the rights holder".

3

u/Kain292 Hoshoryu 22d ago edited 22d ago

That's just the message displayed when there's a filed copyright strike, whether it was actually from Abema or not. This shit happens all the time, companies use AI scrapers and bots to mass report channels. Queen is back on with the sumo, streaming without commentary.

0

u/sicgamer 20d ago

who else would it be if not abema?

-1

u/HyperMarsupial 21d ago edited 21d ago

Midnight said explicitly that he got striken by ABEMA's parent company.

3

u/Kain292 Hoshoryu 21d ago

Much later after this comment was made originally, yes.

2

u/M03b1u5 22d ago

Queen said it was Abema. She could be wrong but that's what she said directly.

2

u/Kain292 Hoshoryu 22d ago

Oh fair enough. I was watching her stream and didn't hear her mention it, must've missed it!

3

u/M03b1u5 22d ago

In her Discord.

1

u/the_undead_build 25d ago

Seeing that JME is showing/showed the matches with the delay times to fit US/Canada. Who has used it and is it good with the delay times? Found it stated there were 4 times 2:00 PM ET 5:00 PM ET 8:00 PM ET 11:00 PM ET, is that true for the past one?

17

u/rsithrowasay69 Sep 14 '26 edited Sep 14 '26

MidnightSumo is pretty hard to watch when 90% of the commentary is "Thanks for the Prime sub! Thanks for the 10 gifted subs, you're so generous!".

I've found one channel that shows it live but doesn't keep VODs - wonder if there's a source that shows the tournament with no obnoxious commentary and stores VODs.

2

u/Vaestmannaeyjar Musashimaru 21d ago

To be fair, he was doing no commentary at all at the start and started doing so after his account being suspended. I suppose that's the justification for "added value" and not just restreaming a television channel.

-9

u/dustblown 22d ago

I don't know if he's improved but Midnightsumo was unwatchable. The dude bans people for making fun of a fighter like he has some weird parasocial relationship with them. He also censors any type of injury but will describe what is happening. It is so bizarre. Midnightsumo has also streamed literal elementary school children fighting in sumo gear.

2

u/bart_r Sep 17 '26

I recently bought a subscription to NordVPN and I have been using their Japanese servers to connect to Abema.tv which is a free japanese public broadcasting streaming site. The quality of the live tournaments on the site has been great, almost always in atleast 1080p. I've considered making a small twitch channel that just mirrors the footage with no external commentary or v-tuber crap, which personally annoys me to no end.

17

u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima Sep 15 '26

I like Leo Dickinson precisely because he offers a stream with no commentary. It’s just the Abema Japanese feed. I’d rather listen to Japanese commentary that I only understand a fraction of than listen to amateur streamer commentary in English. I don’t mind the NHK English commentary when I miss the live broadcast and have to watch the highlights, but the streamer feeds aren’t for me

4

u/HyperMarsupial 21d ago

The whole idea behind streamers doing commentary was because they are safer for "fair use" because they are transforming the content instead of just re-streaming it, so it supposedly has better chances to not get nuked. But copyright laws work differently in Japan and they are showing that providing commentary ain't enough anymore.

1

u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima 21d ago

It was never enough. Abema have just been incredibly lax about enforcing their copyright until now. There’s no other sports that I can think of where the rights holders let streamers get away with what Abema have. Watch-alongs in other sports don’t show any footage and you watch them alongside your own feed of the match/race/tournament.

1

u/HyperMarsupial 21d ago

Yeah, seems like MidnightSumo will pivot to that, being the hangout for added commentary and watch party but he will no longer stream the Abema feed.

4

u/dustblown 22d ago

Yeah, I'm really thankful for the non commentary stream. His commentary is pretty good and I watch that sometimes.

3

u/ChibiNya 20d ago

Whenever I watched Leo in lower divisions he'd talk abut anything except the matches lol. Only locks in for Makuuchi.

At least Midnight actually seems to enjoy the sumo, even Jonokuchi

0

u/dustblown 20d ago

Midnight treats his audience like children. He censors injuries out of respect for the wrestlers but he watches himself and describes what is happening instead. He also has a personality disorder with people who have any sort of negative opinion about anything sumo related, especially about the wrestlers. Midnight pretends to care about the wrestlers to a cringe degree while he is profiteering off their work for free. Midnight is a piece of shit loser. Dude literally streams elementary school children in sumo gear. It isn't even sumo.

5

u/802milestoprescott Sep 13 '26

Where is everyone watching the full basho? Datasumo was my go-to, but he retired and shut down his channel since the last basho.

5

u/Interesting_Line_731 29d ago

You can try ramilio777 on Twitch. no commentary, just the abema feed with an english overlay and stats. it's my channel btw

2

u/rsithrowasay69 27d ago

I saw it went down :(

Yours was my favorite place to watch, perfect actually with the overlays and no comm. Any chance you get it back up again?

3

u/Interesting_Line_731 27d ago

it'll be back soon. meanwhile the same thing is running on sumodata on twitch

6

u/bdzz Sep 14 '26

I watch LionSumo on Youtube. The raw broadcast without commentary, just the stadium noise only + thanks to Youtube it can be paused and rewind. Perfect for me

1

u/rsithrowasay69 Sep 14 '26

It looks like it only goes up til Juryo I think then cuts off, but that's just the VOD. Idk if it shows the rest live?

2

u/bdzz Sep 14 '26

They remove the VODs usually so that's just a left over

But they show the full day in live, today's broadcast was 9 hours long covering the whole thing https://files.catbox.moe/vxmbl0.png

2

u/rsithrowasay69 Sep 14 '26

Thanks. Can't really watch at 5am so looking for a no commentary one with VODs saved

2

u/ArthurDentsTea Aug 10 '26

English commentary videos on NHK seem to have all been privatized. Any idea why or where else I can watch English commentary and not just 5 minute highlights but ful lday coverage?

5

u/doubledipinyou Jul 24 '26

I got into sumo with the London tournament. Been watching every tournament day highlights on YouTube. Is there anything I should watch to better understand the dynamics and rules? Been loving it so far. Fujinokawa is my fav

5

u/No-Elderberry-5729 Jul 23 '26

If you don't get NHK, you can download the NHK app and watch the episodes there.

7

u/leooberon Jul 22 '26

Is there any English voiced over sites or services besides the NHK highlights on YouTube? I just recently got into watching sumo and have been viewing the current tournament, but I was curious about see the shikiri as well which NHK seems to cut out

4

u/chanashan Jul 22 '26

Any english or english overlay streamer? Midnight is unwatchable nowadays 99% stream is about the chat and subs, datasumo was good but stopped streaming...

1

u/LurkytheActiveposter Aug 06 '26

NHK highlights on YouTube

2

u/RoyWy Jul 21 '26

Is there any reason why I can’t find any of the usual sources to watch live on YouTube. Was there a change or something new? I cannot find any real highlights from yesterday either

1

u/Vivid-Most-3960 Jul 30 '26

if you mean, why cant you watch Grand Sumo highlights on YouTube broadcast by NHK,...they dont muck about ... watch or miss it...gotta be quick! it is possible they have copyright over the broadcast and pull it from the internet when it is no longer current. i think they pull Japonopedia eps whenever they appeared on YouTube

2

u/redditismylawyer Aug 29 '26

lol…

Q: “What’s the reason?”

A: “They do it! Maybe copywrite? Who knows!”

“…”

2

u/sprauncey_dildoes Jul 18 '26

Is there any pattern to what days NHK post highlights on YouTube? They seem to post a few days then miss one or two days. Is there a schedule or is it random?

1

u/Vivid-Most-3960 Jul 30 '26

they dont upload over the weekend and then it comes all in a rush on Monday. All 15 days are uploaded.

3

u/manomount Jul 20 '26

they miss the weekends usually.

I watch via https://www.youtube.com/@sumowithherbert

Its edited from japanese, but with AI translate i can read good informative commentary.

2

u/Bill-Dozer Jul 18 '26

Go directly to NHK’s website. They post the highlights every day, it’s much more reliable.

1

u/sprauncey_dildoes Jul 18 '26

Thanks, I’ll give it a try. I’ve tried their app on my Google chromecast but it misses the same days as YouTube.

2

u/lexustexus55 Shishi Jul 13 '26

Where can you watch Juryo recording of all matches?

3

u/GainTarts Jul 21 '26

https://www.youtube.com/@sumo-highlights/videos

I found this channel that does Juryo highlights

2

u/StarPrime323 Ura Jul 12 '26

I'm staying at a hotel for the first week of this tournament, so my normal way of watching the basho won't work. What I usually do is watch on the NHK Channel on Fios, but the hotel I'm staying at has an LG TV. How should I watch the NHK HIghlights without being a Day behind?

1

u/revbombastic Jul 12 '26

How is the NhK uploading to YouTube? Is it day on is uploaded on day two or like it all goes up after the tournament is over?

3

u/StarPrime323 Ura Jul 12 '26

They usually upload to YouTube a day behind, so Day 1 should be uploaded tomorrow.

1

u/N_pods Jul 21 '26

Do you know if there is a way to see the highlights on their website or something? I find their style of highlights the most enjoyable to watch but wasn’t sure if you knew of a way to view them earlier/faster by chance. Thank you!

1

u/Wormwood413 Jun 16 '26

Went to send my buddy a link to day 1 of the NHK May Basho Highlights and it's nowhere to be found. Poked around for about 20min to see if it was just the way I was querying for results. Looked on NHK's channel and still nothing. However, I found this new Sumo Highlights channel that seems to have started with the May Basho that I'd never run across before. My opinion on if this new channel is good or not is irrelevant, but from what I just saw of the Paris highlights I much prefer the NGK format. Has anyone else suddenly found there is no longer Grand Sumo Tournament Highlights originally produced by NHK available? Is it possible that this new Sumo Highlights channel is somehow an NHK sanctioned spin-off? If NHK did remove their content does anyone have any thoughts as to why that would happen? I'll likely go back to watching Jason give us the breakdown as that was originally how I found Sumo during the pandemic. Chris does a good job reporting on certain topics, but NHK had the best highlights IMO.

3

u/Friendly_cow Ura Jun 27 '26

I learnt this the hard way, NHK on YouTube and their website only keep up the grand sumo highlights for around 2-3 weeks after the tournament. After that they scrub it from their offical channels. I don't know why, but it sucks.

5

u/GrenadineLemonade Jun 03 '26

Anyone have info on where to watch the Paris exhibition?

7

u/masao77 Hakunofuji Jun 10 '26

It will be streamed on france.tv. You may need a VPN to access it from outside France.

From France, it's free, you just need to create an account

Maybe they'll also put it on their youtube channel

1

u/piamw Jun 08 '26

No one knows ?

1

u/Nosniboreel Jun 13 '26

Pluto TV France, Canada or UK. They have a Sumo Paris 2026 channel.

1

u/ksupwns33 May 25 '26

Hi! I'm brand new to sumo but having so much fun learning it. I've been watching the replays on the NHK world Japan YouTube channel but they haven't posted Day 13+ of the May tournament yet! Is there a better channel or source to watch with light commentary like the NHK channel? Thank you!

3

u/American-Punk-Dragon Ura May 22 '26

Where can I watch all the Juryo matches!?!?

1

u/piamw Jun 08 '26

I want to know as well. Where can you watch them w/ commentary?

2

u/lollmao2000 Gonoyama Jun 29 '26

There’s no commentary for Juryo. There are twitch streamers that do that live though.

3

u/geomathmech May 18 '26

As much as I am interested in watch active (current?) sumo, is there any way to watch older stuff with English banners or subtitles, like ~90s to now? Or is it more fun to watch it live

1

u/MrSnippets Aug 02 '26

I've found nothing collected, but some fans (like sumo stew or Don Don) sometimes upload videos of past rivalries (like Hakuho vs Asashoryu) or retrospective on the greats of the sport.

4

u/AgreeAndSubmit Asakoryu May 11 '26

I would like to ask, if there's a way to watch juryo and makuuchi divisions in full the next day? I see the twitch streams but, the commentary is often distracting. In our house, we don't find the commentary is beneficial. Does Abema have it available? If anyone knows anything, would you please share a link? After watching entire sumo divisions, the highlights feel, sorta lacking. They never show the salt throw! Or Kotoeiho's Big Stretch!

7

u/PencillCat Aonishiki May 12 '26

Datasumo on twitch and youtube! Very minimal commentary, only to introduce the rikishi each match and any useful info about them.

4

u/AgreeAndSubmit Asakoryu May 14 '26

I watched Datasumo last night, man is this an awesome channel! It looks fantastic on the tv, the chat room is decent too. Thank you for the quality referral. I will continue to pass on the word.

7

u/ZappCatt Jul 01 '26

And just like that...he is gone. So bummed. Found him from this thread earlier this week, watched a rerun of one of his last streams, and he has called it quits.

3

u/PencillCat Aonishiki Jul 02 '26

Just saw myself. Super bummed. Really not sure where to watch from here. Not a fan of other streamers constant commentary, and lack of english overlays. :(

1

u/beergut666 Jul 12 '26

Just tried to tune in and was directed to his goodbye post on sumosalt, what a bummer. Did you happen to find another stream with English overlays? I really like seeing the names of the wrestlers in the lower divisions especially, the top guys I know pretty well.

8

u/PencillCat Aonishiki Jul 12 '26

Only on youtube, avoidingthehenka. At least has the names, ranks, and beya in english. I paired it with Sumostats website, which has a live page of each match + all the stats.

3

u/AgreeAndSubmit Asakoryu Jul 12 '26

Heck yeah! I have it on now, hit the subscribe button too! It's nice to read their names, then we can find their stats on the sumo.or.jp  site.

3

u/beergut666 Jul 12 '26

Thank you so much friend, I really appreciate it!

3

u/AgreeAndSubmit Asakoryu Jul 01 '26

Damn! Thanks for telling me. I watched his goodbye video. He's a good dude, hopefully we get to see him back again.

3

u/Exivus May 22 '26

Agreed! Datasumo is the best one out there!

3

u/PencillCat Aonishiki May 14 '26

You're welcome! More sumo for all!

3

u/AgreeAndSubmit Asakoryu May 12 '26

Yay!! Thank you!

2

u/Vinyl_Fanatic Apr 30 '26

I'm considering a subscription to Jme TV so I can watch the Juryo bouts for the May tournament. I'm not finding anything on their site regarding what they stream live and have available on demand. Does anyone here have a Jme TV subscription and do you know if the Juryo bouts are available to watch? Thank you!

3

u/Agamlemnon May 09 '26

I’ve had subscriptions I. The past and have not seen juryo. Only makuuchi.

4

u/Vinyl_Fanatic May 11 '26

Thank you for the info!

nhk is a big company with conflicting interests.

One department manages their rights and legal stuff, and doesn't want people taking what they have the rights to show without pairing.

another department manages funds, payments, and subscriptions in general, and will gladly take money from whoever will pay.

ANOTHER department manages the technical side of broadcasting, and has no interest in making it accessible for foreign viewers in the west, because it's just more work for them and not in their purview to decide.

2

u/SoldierHawk Aonishiki Apr 21 '26

I doubt it. Like sportsnet and hockey I'm sure they pay top dollar for it and won't be giving up that monopoly anytime soon.

That said, the same solution to the sportsnet issue exists for sumo: get a VPN. Worth every penny if you're a sports fan especially. (Also works to let you watch region locked anime on Crunchyroll!)

I mean a lot of browsers have free built in ones tonight I don't know how good they are. I use Nord, myself. It's not free but not too bad as VPNs go especially if you can buy the two year+ deal.

1

u/ShamesBond May 05 '26

I have a VPN but my understanding is that you need an address and have paid the fee to be able to watch. Is that not the case?

1

u/SoldierHawk Aonishiki May 05 '26

Absolutely not the case. VPN to Japan, go to the Abema website, wrestle with the fact that the site is in Japanese/their video player sucks/you might have to refresh the VPN if they have that particular ip blocked, and you can totally watch for free, no sign in or address needed. It's how I do it.

That site + VPN is a huge pain in the ass, and I always start working on getting it up and running about 20 min before the thing I actually want to see is on. But with a little patience and practice it DOES work, no sign in or anything required.

You could even practice now, just go to Abema and try to play whatever is on at the moment just to get a feel for how it works.

5

u/patty25502 Mar 31 '26

Is there anywhere online to watch the Spring Tour bouts? I searched the thread but didn’t see it mentioned anywhere.

3

u/frog-and-cranberries Mar 24 '26

Does anyone cover Juryo in a similar style to the NHK highlight videos? I mean with English overlay, and downtime cut. Doesn't have to be an official source.

2

u/oneshitaminute Mar 19 '26

Are there any good bars or places to watch sumo aired live in Osaka? Is that a thing?

2

u/ieatticks Mar 15 '26

NHK stopped uploading sumo highlights on YouTube after day 5? We found it on their website but it's inconvenient to watch on a tv. Anyone have a better way to watch now?

4

u/DasGottlos Mar 16 '26

They don't upload to YouTube on weekends or holidays.

Nhk does have an app that they can be watched on. Maybe screenshare a phone or tablet to a TV?

3

u/ieatticks Mar 16 '26

Oh, thank you!!! I see all the weekend's matches are up on YouTube now that it's Monday.

Their app may work better than what we did, which was screen share a phone and used a browser to watch on their website. We might try that this weekend!

1

u/explosaurus Mar 13 '26

Is anyone else having issues with the NHKWorld highlights today? I'm getting a perpetual buffer :C

4

u/bbusiello Mar 10 '26

There's something going on with NHK (the actual cable TV) channel, saying there's a time slot for Sumo (and recording the time slot), but it's not Sumo, it's something else. Anyone else having this issue? Been watching Sumo on the same TV for over a year now and have never had this issue.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Yes, same here. It's very frustrating. My DVR and channel guide say Grand Sumo Highlights will be on but it's always other programming. It's been going on for this entire month. I've been watching Grand Sumo Highlights on the NHK cable channel for years and now it's no longer available.

2

u/bbusiello Mar 17 '26

I'm having to use the app. I'm not sure what happened, but I'm super behind.

1

u/handofluke Mar 10 '26

Hi all. What time does the NHK app usually post the daily highlights?

1

u/LordPhish Mar 09 '26

Is there any way to watch live coverage from the US, like id i stay up until 3AM is there anywhere I can watch while it's happening. NHK have a video of live coverage the day after, so I'm curious if i can watch that stream live somewhere.

3

u/Reiker0 Mar 17 '26

I like MidnightSumo on Twitch.

1

u/bdzz Mar 13 '26

Plenty of livestreams on Twitch and Youtube

1

u/Rhauko Mar 12 '26

SB Sumo on Youtube works for me in EU

7

u/AudacityOfKappa Feb 27 '26

There was a channel that uploads the official coverage, but adds English subtitles. I really enjoy the insight by the Japanese commentators, but I forgot the channel. Anyone remember what it is?

2

1

u/MortgageReady2444 Jul 23 '26

Can you also DM this if the channel is still around?

1

u/pinsandvinegar May 10 '26

Could you DM me this channel/link?

1

u/dansephoenix1 Mar 13 '26

Why, if you don't mind me asking?

2

u/AudacityOfKappa Mar 14 '26

In case there's some way for the NHK to strike the channel. Maybe being a bit paranoid, but better to be safe than sorry.

1

u/Kavi0121 Takayasu May 08 '26

Could you DM me the name please? Thank you!

1

u/Dominiong May 24 '26

Could you DM me the name as well? Thank you!

1

u/Thors_Rampage Feb 03 '26

I am just starting to watch and was wondering if there is a calender and maybe a introduction guide into the sport and current roster?

2

u/ItsMangel Gonoyama Mar 05 '26

NHK World Japan has a load of introductory videos explaining the sport, and there should be a preview up before this weekend with a rundown of who to keep an eye on for the upcoming tournament.

1

u/rurkob Jan 28 '26

Official english commentary for each match and tournament presented as a 30 minute highlight reel: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/

These are the same videos they used to post to youtube.

2

u/bdzz Jan 30 '26

They still post it on Youtube, nothing changed. Both gets removed after 2 weeks.

1

u/TragiccoBronsonne Jan 27 '26

Once again hoping to find a source for a full English commentary basho daily coverage, preferably as VOD or video file available on the same/next day, but live streams also will do. PM if you can share, thanks.

5

u/Chewbaccraft Kirishima Mar 02 '26

Leo Dickinson sumo on YouTube or twitch

1

u/dbqpdb Mar 03 '26

This is the place to go for easy vods & english commentary. Don't go to that other channel, that guy sucks lol

1

u/Chewbaccraft Kirishima Mar 03 '26

I am sorry I don't master English language. Who sucks? Leo Dickinson or the other?

1

u/dbqpdb Mar 03 '26

Leo Dickinson is good, watch him here

1

u/Chewbaccraft Kirishima Mar 03 '26

I know he's good I have already watched him for about 2 years now. I don't understand why you said that guy sucked. Who is that guy?

1

u/dbqpdb Mar 03 '26

I'm not going to explicitly name anyone but there is another very popular sumo streamer who can be very toxic to his viewers.

1

u/garbledeena Kirishima May 04 '26

are the initials HW?

1

u/dbqpdb May 04 '26

idk his actual name, but I'm thinking more MNS

2

u/Chewbaccraft Kirishima Mar 03 '26

Ok I am gonna stick to Leo then . Thank you for taking the time to explain what I did not understand. Peace

3

u/virtron Jan 24 '26

This is very niche, but I used to watch the NHK highlight videos on their site via a docked Steam Deck in desktop mode. This worked fine until around the November basho last year, which I think coincided with changes to how and when NHK posts them. Now I only get an error about my browser not supporting video features (I assume some kind of DRM, but there's no detail).

Has anyone else had an issue with watching the NHK videos on Linux? Did you solve it?

3

u/mdezzi Jan 26 '26

I just pulled the site up in chrome on my steam deck (desktop mode, while docked) and it played fine. I am using a Dell WD19S laptop dock from the scrap pile at my office.

2

u/virtron Jan 27 '26

I've been using Firefox, so I guess I'll give Chrome a try. Thanks

Will there be a ending ceremony during the last day of Basho? If yes, when will it be aired and where can I watch it?

7

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Big ups to datasumo on twitch. Easily the best stream out there right now, have to rec him. Much more watchable than the other lifestyle type streamers who happen to also stream sumo

5

u/bdzz Jan 23 '26

+1 for datasumo, switched to him this basho. Much more relaxed

I’ve always been curious about Sumo Wrestling. How / where should I begin?

I would love good informational YouTube channel that is beginner friendly or at least has some videos for first steps into it.

For baseline I know the basics. Don’t get pushed out and don’t touch the ground.

I really want to learn the ceremonial and history as well if there is a channel that is good for that

I discovered sumo with the Netflix tv show "sanctuary" It is a great show where you can learn the basics. On this channel you can view techniques breakdowns to understand the beauty of sumo https://youtube.com/@dondonsumo2?si=4LQqDvHpEnNlUFi5

5

u/bdzz Jan 23 '26

NHK Sumopedia has everything

All the techniques https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/techniques/

Everything from ceremonies to traditions and rules https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/sumopedia/

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

1st thing I would say you should do is watch datasumo live on twitch, his channel is the best resource for actually learning the modern sport. The history is tougher. Most sources will be in japanese.

2

u/bladecg Jan 23 '26

I used to watch on NHK YouTube channel. It had all the monthly tournaments and was very convenient but it seems they have removed all sumo content :/

10

u/MrLight Jan 21 '26

I upload almost every bout from all divisions to sumostats!

While it is not great for watching a whole tournament, it is handy if you just want to quickly check out a few specific bouts!

1

u/Blueson Shishi Jan 24 '26

As a first time watcher this basho, that website has been great to get a rudimentary understanding of who is who and what they have accomplished historically. It's so well designed as well.

Thanks a lot mate!

5

u/MrLight Jan 24 '26

I do plan on making it more friendly to new sumo fans in the future... For example it's confusing how the ranks work in sumo ( east/west/divisions/sanyaku etc).. I would love to hear your suggestions or what you found confusing! (the ui can be a bit all over the place sometimes)

2

u/Blueson Shishi Jan 26 '26

Personally I've been pretty happy about design and explanations on the website. It's just what I want for these types of websites.

It would be nice to maybe have tooltips on some terms? Personally I still get confused trying to figure out what kimarite is what. But I also don't mind looking up those terms externally, as long as the data is portrayed well. Which I personally think it is.

2

u/MrLight Jan 26 '26

There already are tooltips on the kimarite! (because I have the exact same problem haha)

2

u/Blueson Shishi Jan 26 '26

Omg there are, sorry I don't know why I assumed there weren't without seemingly not even having tried it?

1

u/mdezzi Jan 26 '26

As a new sumo fan, this website is gold. But I am pissed that I just found it today after the tournament has ended. 🤬

1

u/MrLight Jan 26 '26

It will be here, bigger and better for the next basho! (maybe)

2

u/Ok_Difference44 Jan 21 '26

Tonight's sumo highlights pre-empted by Yamagamai sentencing news followed by peaceful pure land Buddhism programming!

6

u/Low-Eagle6917 Jan 18 '26

For those looking for English commentary with the full Event streamed (or at least I think most of it), I found a channel on Twitch called LeoDickinsonSumo. Here, two men delve into the sport and culture and commentate the matches - it is like I am watching an actual sport on television! Had a blast listening to their commentary, it is really good.

Can’t get Abema to work and despise Twitch; is the Grand Sumo Highlights on NHK World the only way to watch?

I have a VPN and tried multiple browsers yet still could not get it to Work. I tried Twitch for the first time and started watching MidnightSumo over the last few days and despised it. While he does provide some English commentary, half the time he just talks about himself, banning trolls, and thanking people for money. I really hate it and find it annoying. Basically I am watching sumo through someone else’s ego filter.

I really wanted to watch the event live but live in America. NHK World seems to have the division 1 highlights; is that the best we can get?

1

u/tempmike Takayasu Mar 10 '26

theres sumo on kick

5

u/Reasonable_Aerie_357 Jan 24 '26

Totally agree, I have watched the last few basho's here but he is annoying me to the point I don't want to now. He is the most "get off of my lawn" guy ive watched on twitch. Constantly threating to ban people, complaining about his chat if they dare to ask a question he doesn't like or they speak ever so slightly about something he doesn't like. I can't be doing with him anymore. Just a miserable guy.

1

u/krept0007 May 19 '26

How dare he enforce class and respect on his channel

1

u/Reasonable_Aerie_357 Jun 01 '26

He's power hungry narcissist on an ego trip. Enforcing class and respect is fine, but when you get to the point where just asking a question gets you threatened with the hammer you know you're in the wrong place. Hiding the rikishi weights and cutting away from injuries like hes trying to protect them (hello we can see they are big guys) agreeing with every decision the JSA make, not wanting to talk about decision that a Gyoji may have gotten wrong. You mention betting and you get threatened (but then happily lets viewers bet 'salt' during juryo) The guy is a douche and the stream is so clicky its on another level. Glad I have nothing to do with it anymore.

Can’t get Abema to work

Remeber to clear/refresh cookies. If you connect to Abema (or NHK) without a VPN connection that'll create a cookie essentially saying that you dont have access. And then once you turn on your VPN and connect it to Japan, your web browsers cookie does not update, keeping the initial restricted setting. Simply have to delete the specific cookie (or all of them if you cant figure that out) and only load the Abema/NHK page with your VPN active.

6

u/bdzz Jan 20 '26

datasumo on Twitch. He barely talks and there is an awesome overlay with all the stats and info about each bout.

3

u/Plenty-Sector2800 Jan 16 '26

If you watch on your phone or tablet the official grand sumo app is pretty good. It's not perfect if you just want to watch, but you can watch bout by bout and slow it down to replay it if you missed what happened. I think it's like $4 month

16

u/bronzebrew Jan 15 '26

The official NHK World sumo page posts the highlights with english commentary the same day after the bouts: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/shows/sumo/

The YouTube channel used to be pretty quick to upload but they've seemed to have slowed. Nhk website is how I watched this basho. Navigating the site on my firetv was clunky as hell tho

u/LMGDiVa Aonishiki Jan 15 '26 edited Jan 15 '26

If you all really wanna watch and not have to deal with stuff, just pay the 3$ a month for a windscribe custom plan.
Select the servers for Japan, your own country, and unlimited data, it equates to 3$ a month.

Install the chrome extension(tried edge, it doesnt work on edge for whatever reason), turn windscribe on, and just watch on Abema.
It's free, they have the stream archives of upper division.

No reason to watch people like Leo or any of the other youtubers who make money of this, they're just leeches.
If you're going to pay 2~3$ for a youtuber whatever, just get windscribe and watch it on ABEMA directly.

And you dont have to worry about the streamer getting banned in the middle of watching.

1

u/brooklyninja Feb 14 '26

Do you know where exactly you can watch it on Abema? I'm not familiar with the site, you said they have archives of the upper division?

1

u/LMGDiVa Aonishiki Feb 14 '26

It's in the Sports section. It's written in Katakana.

If you memorize the kanji for "Oozumo" grandsumo it should be easier to find. It was like some of the first kanji I learned lol

1

u/brooklyninja Feb 14 '26

Oh ok cool, thank you! That was helpful haha

2

u/_warning Jan 27 '26

Thanks, this is really helpful. I downloaded the NHK One app as well as ABEMA, they both work over VPN. I enjoy the Japanese coverage.

2

u/xkiom Jan 15 '26

I would actually recommend the official site for individual highlights: https://www.nhk.jp/g/ts/Z8WRRJ9K96/blog/bl/pm1VNbJpWQ/bp/pExrRxao2y/

The highlights of individual bouts are uploaded really fast. The quality might not be the best though. Also recommend to use translator for ease of use (in case you don't recognize kanji numbers)

I like the presentation of NHKs official stuff but their delay on recap uploads drives me insane. No weekends (fair enough) but being a day or two behind during the week is ROUGH.

I wish I had an alternative to them that wasn't either a multi hour stream or small-time (not in a condescending way) youtuber with movie maker cuts and transitions that just chops from fight to fight to fight.

I quite like that the NHK uploads let the matches breathe a little, we get a bit of background commentary between matches, and my wife and I enjoy counting the adverts flags before a match and guessing the size of the bundle.

7

u/Kintamayama2 Atamifuji Jan 15 '26

Thanks for the kind words. Movie maker cuts indeed. I was doing this when all the others doing them today didnt know how to spell "sumo". Granted, the others have better quality and stats and stuff, mine is a digest of about 15 minutes and the purpose is making it short. Very short. Some prefer this, some want more. Excellent. 12 years, never missed a basho. Thanks for watching.

1

u/zerololcats Aonishiki Jan 16 '26

Wow, I didn't know you've been doing it for so long. Thanks for your work, I'm one that appreciates the shorter format. Sometimes I like watching a longer video and sometimes I wish I could be fly a billilion miles to watch them whole 15 days in person for first bout to the last. Mostly I want to see the matches, see who won and be done with it that day. Anyway, thanks again for your efforts, I know it's not an easy thing to do.

1

u/SomanZ Jan 15 '26

Hey for what it's worth I love how short your videos are, they're amazing right after the event. Sometimes I'll take the time to rewatch a day I liked with the NHK video days later, in a more slow pace.

Thanks for the great content!

3

u/mekagojira3 Tobizaru Jan 15 '26

I'm very grateful for the service provided, and appreciate your work. I hope I have caused no offense, you do provide an essential service that I'm very glad exists.

4

u/Kintamayama2 Atamifuji Jan 15 '26

No offense, I'm too old for that..

2

u/Aarresaari Wakatakakage Jan 15 '26

Are you following them on youtube or their own site?

They show the highlights later on the same day (same day in my area at least) on live tv: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/live_tv/?at_medium=RSS%20feed&at_campaign=ynews

I think they also update the highlights there about the same time.

1

u/mekagojira3 Tobizaru Jan 15 '26

YouTube, for the first few tournaments I watched they had the highlights uploaded same day. I believe day 5 is ongoing as we speak and day4 highlights are still not up.

I would love to switch to the website if its faster, but I watch on a TV with YouTube built in.

1

u/AndreBennettGO Jan 22 '26

Does your TV have capability for other apps, or just YouTube? I watch Grand Sumo highlights on demand now on the NHK World app on my Roku TV.

2

u/Aarresaari Wakatakakage Jan 15 '26

I see. I would not count on them changing their habits any time soon, so I hope you can find some other way to follow closer to real time.
