Discussion / Question / Commentary Identifying a rikshi

Post image

I found this cool photograph of a sumo wrestler probably dated back in the 90s. He maybe was a salaried wrestler (due to the white mawashi) and im just curious on who he is

looks like former Juryo Tenkoyama Yutaka maybe? but it's hard to tell. he retired in 1989. are there more pictures, or a solid date?

I could be totally wrong, but that would mean the picture was taken in 1984, and the other man's t-shirt does not look like something I would expect to see worn back then. What is that image on the shirt anyway, some kind of floor plan?

(I half-suspect if nobody can identify the rikishi outright, the second-best chance would be somebody recognizing the building wall in the background as being some particular heya, and allowing the rikishi possibilities to be narrowed down... But I'm not sure if that's actually the heya or just some other building nearby.)

The closest match I've been able to think of myself is Chiyohakuho, but I don't think that's right.

yeah, I wasn't convinced it was him from the dates. Chiyohakuho looks close, too. but no moles? I haven't been stumped this bad by one of these posts in a long time, lol. I was trying to go off of the yukata in the top photo- assuming the two are related- I can see the 豊 and 里 kanji on the fabric, but searching former rikishi from stables that used those kanji often didn't turn up anything for me.

ETA: looked up more pics of Chiyohakuho- looks like a match to me? I think you might be on the money with that guess!

If you could try and get a year or year range down rather than 90s, would you be able to?

But I can defo say he is a salaried wrestler indeed

There was no date inscribed in the frame or photo sadly
