Question / Help Advice for Duck, NC OBX surf fishing

I’m headed down to Duck, NC tomorrow for a week and plan on doing some surf fishing (Aug 15-22).

I’m planning on using a pompano rig and sand fleas / shrimp.

Anyone have some advice on what’s been biting this past week?

I look forward to this all year, so advice for an amateur is appreciated!

Pompano, whiting, croakers, bluefish, spanish mackeral. Cobia boats are stsrting to show up close to shore as well

Duck should be fishing decent this week. I'm down around Nags Head but it's the same water — mornings you'll see blues and spanish crashing bait close in, throw a small clark spoon or a gotcha and just burn it back. your sand flea + pompano rig will keep you busy through the day with pompano, whiting, and croaker mixed in. if you want a shot at a slot red put a second rod out with finger mullet on a fishfinder rig and get it past the trough. water's still warm so first light and the last hour before dark are the two windows I'd actually plan around.

Catching anything? I was in Rodanthe a few weeks ago. Totally new to surf fishing. We tried from the shore and from the pier, didn't catch much besides a few croaker and a small sea mullet, were hoping for Spanish Mackerel and bluefish, and pompano.  The lady at the pier said there's not much of a bite when the water is murky, which was the case when we were there.  Still had fun though! 

We also went offshore out of hatteras the last day and caught like 50 mahi so that helped morale a lot 🤣
