I've been thinking a lot about my masculinity as a half-Chinese man and how I've often felt insecure about it. Masculinity is different for everyone, so I'm still working on accepting that my masculinity will probably look different compared to that of a fully white man.

Being mixed-race is weird because I was called a "mong" at school for being half Asian, even before I was harassed for coming out as trans in 2015 (aged 12). I hated being half Asian and wanted to be white and blonde-haired, which is a really fucked up thing to think about.

However, as I've gotten older, I've become more white-passing, meaning that white people don't really believe that I experienced racism. At one point, I tried to hide that I was half Asian because I felt insecure about my eyes being more almond-shaped and my hair being really straight (two common characteristics of East Asian people).

It's frustrating because I feel like I exist in a strange intersection as a half East Asian transgender man. Additionally, I was diagnosed with "moderate to severe" autism at 8 and ADHD at 16. At the time (2000s/2010s), it was unusual for kids with "high-functioning" autism to be diagnosed before the age of 12.

Growing up in a predominantly white area, I always felt "different" because my peers were mostly white with blonde hair. It probably didn't help that I also felt "inferior" because my parents didn't have much money (our household income was too low to be impacted by the 2008 recession). No one ever said anything about my parents not having much money, but it was just something else I felt burdened by at 5.

Nowadays, we're still a low-income household, but we're okay. I've never experienced poverty in any meaningful sense, so I don't call it that. It's purely a low household income.

I never saw mainstream representation of a family that looked like my own.

From an early age, I felt ugly as a little half-Chinese girl. I was never a girl, but society thought I was. My parents are very progressive and never enforced gender, but society did. I still feel a need not to take up space and to always think about others' emotions before my own. Raising my voice and having any level of self-confidence is difficult.

Vent I feel disconnected, because my birth/mother country and tradition is transphobia and is filled with misogyny and homophobic views and rhetorics.

First of all, some context here.
I'm not born in the states,
and I'm Korean - Amercian.

But I'm very close with my Korean culture and I speak Korean very well because that is my native language and I'm an immigrant here that was naturalized [fortunate to be one and I'm in big gratitude]

Korea is my mother country, the place I was born and raised from.
And I do not hate Korean people and in fact, most of them were kind
and very understanding as well.

Most of all, I'm not ashamed of my own heritage.

But when I came out as trans masc/Non - Binary person, I realized that I had to distance myself from watching and connecting to my Korean identity and their traditional cultures.

And the biggest reason? It was because of blatent misogyny, transphobia, and that toxic masculinity where Non - Binary people are called mad, insane and crazy [calling them "woke"], and trans woman are considered as a toy, something to play around with and "find" out.

And worst of all, South Korea currently has no Anti - discrimination laws and it is incredibly hard to transition in Korea compared to some states in the U.S. [I know there are still many states very hostile to trans folks in general]

I just saw this Korean Youtuber [I do watch many Korean content although I'm distancing from them I just watch documentaries most of the time now] with this thumbnail, "FIND THE REAL WOMAN" with bunch of trans woman to get the VIEWS. After seeing that, I felt a bit triggered and quite annoyed, so I turned the whole app off.

I honestly wish that my mother country becomes more open and more willing to view gay, queer and trans people with empathy and to be more friendly toward them, but they are still struggling and the fact that I feel this disconnect with my own heritage and culture is really eating me alive.

I just despise the fact too, that only very fucking few, handful nations are accepting of the queer community and that they are valid human being.

But yeah, this is how I felt and I just had to get this off from my chest.

thanks for reading.

Vent so frustrating when white trans women create oppression olympics. i’ve met women like this irl, too. and yet, i don’t create monoliths against all trans women. unfortunately, some do not afford us the same grace.

yes, she’s a white woman, i checked. it’s insane to me that she’s getting upvoted while being openly bigoted and hateful. i’d say maybe 40% of white trans women i’ve met irl have this kind of mindset, and still, that has not evolved into me hating all trans women. i’ve never seen this be an issue with trans women of color tbh.

Advice Bathroom Issues

Lately, I've been getting directed to the other public bathroom, no matter which one I go to. Strangers generally seem to be unsure of how to address me but most go for a "sir...???" waiting for me to confirm that's correct. Sometimes I get a "sir? Ma'am?" But then I go to a bathroom and nobody seems to think I belong with them. If I am with someone who clearly belongs there like with my sister or with a cis male friend, then there's no questions. But me going to a public bathroom alone ends up being an issue basically every time and it's getting frustrating. I don't really mind going to either gender restroom, I just want to not be bothered. How do I handle this situation?

Even before transitioning, I've had the issue of people who haven't seen or heard me not thinking I belong with them, or self insert characters who were never assigned a gender in the story being viewed as a woman by all the guys who read the story and being seen as a man by all the girls who read the story. Basically, nobody has ever thought I belong in the same gendered group that they belong to, but now that my appearance is also androgynous, this effect has reached into my real life and I just don't know how to handle it. I don't want to avoid going out without a bathroom chaperone or something like that. That seems really silly.

I do want to stress that this isn't a dangerous situation for me. I'm in a big city in Nepal, where transphobia isn't a topic of interest to the general population. We don't have much political attention, negative or otherwise; and most cis people don't think about trans people at all. Even when people are confused by seeing me, most of them are assuming I had some kind of hormonal issue during puberty, and not thinking that I might be trans. It's just not something that's on most people's radar.

I am safe, and people aren't trying to be rude and there's no active hate involved. I'm visibly autistic and people usually assume I have a learning disability and misread the sign. Nobody is assuming ill intent on my part and I know they also hold no ill intentions towards me. I am not at risk of being physically harmed or even getting the cops called on me or anything like that. I am completely safe, it's just rather awkward and having awkward interactions every time I enter a public toilet is getting exhausting.

How do I handle this situation? It's mostly a mild inconvenience rather than an imminent threat, so I don't need any urgent solutions, but it would be nice to not have a really uncomfortable conversation in every public toilet I enter

Advice Northeast U.S. gang, who was your top surgeon?

I’ve been doing research for quite some time now on finding someone I’d be comfortable with doing my top surgery.
I’ve looked through the recommended names in my close area, but they either A) don’t have enough result pics for me to judge or B) have literally no poc in their gallery.
I’ve been considering going to philadelphia specifically for surgery because it’s not too far & theres so many options in the city to choose, but I’d like to hear the experience of northeasters as a whole. Even if you haven’t gotten surgery yet but have a surgeon in mind, I’d like to know as well.

Achievement I lost white friends but forgot the difference I make on men of colour I teach

So some of you might have seen my post(s) on a white trans friend and their boyfriend who cut me off. It hurts a lot, but then this morning I told some of my students good luck on their final English exam.

The first kid I taught in History and I was proud of his knowledge of African American and African geopolitics instantly. His eyes brightened because his teacher never acknowledged his brilliance. It was a group class, but this young man reached out to me of his own accord even though I saw him once.

Second kid: I've been tutoring the second kid for 8 months now, and he was broken down by his English teacher. He himself worked his ass off to overcome his struggles, and is going from 30% in English to 70%. They told him he's got no career in anything, let alone writing, but this man blows me away with his stories.

I am not a Black man, but because the kids know I'm mixed, queer and progressive they confide in me. And that shit means the world to me.

To know I'm appreciated by two young black men who know I'm trans should mean more to me than the white people who break me down when they are trans.

Update on the sitaution with my friend's weird cishet boyfriend

Transcriptions I made from two voice notes from him:

“I’ve pretty much written you off from how you’re treating (partner); you seem to be very sort of “high and mighty about how people treat (my partner)”

“Not gonna allow you to talk to them. (partner)”

“Emasculating yourself and being a misogynist”

“Raging out about bigger issues and insecurities”

“I’m personally washing my hands of you”

“Many issues of your own I am not sorting out and dealing with and lashing out at people close to you, and I’m not gonna like that happens with you.”

“Engage with me, leave (partner) alone”

“You believe you have social skills and social reading and that but um, to be completely honest you don’t. You deal with teenagers all day and act like a teenager in all sorts of situations. You’re lacking the social maturity of an 18 year-old, let alone a 29-year-old. And definitely be worried that you’re behind and not ready for 30 because you are not ready, because you’ve done very little right and a lot wrong. You don’t reflect a lot and lash

I then sent him a two-page google doc explaining how he was a misogynistic, transandrophobic. He said I have Bipolar in response to my heartfelt (if emotional) document on why I believed he was in the wrong. Anyway, where do ya'll find BIPOC friends when you're isolated in a white neighbourhood with no car?

I'm sorry, this is a friend of 13 years. They are trans and disabled. But after my partner told me my friend had always used me as a convenience, I couldn't stop crying because it was true. My only BIPOC friends are women and their husbands have forbade them from being my friend due to me being a man. In all fairness, this is pretty typical culturally, but it stings. I'm bi and dating a man with no intent to hit on these women, even though they often do hit on me.

I'm so broken inside. 13 years of friendship ruined by my friend's poor decisions and their asshole of a boyfriend. I have helped them with as much as I could from when they were 13 years old and we weren't friends yet. It hurts. I've got no long-term IRL friends left, or even IRL friends.

I have no idea how to befriend black men. They're super chilled with me, I just get anxious that I fuck up or don't live up to their expectations. I know that sounds almost transphobic, but...idk. I am crying so much inside.

This happened with my aunt and uncle, my sister and her husband and now my best friend and their boyfriend. They all chose their partner over people they'd known their whole lives/a long time.

Discussion Asking trans men of west Asian descent who were hairy pre T or other poc trans men with hairy genetics: How fast did facial / body hair growth take place when you started T?

I know it can be different for anyone but I am starting T soon and I‘m wondering how long I can expect until I see changes. For reference, I am quite hairy with my entire torso being covered in darker velus hair, so I’m hoping that it‘ll thicken and am wondering how long it‘ll take. Same for my face, covered in velus hair but denser at areas like over and under lip, chin, neck, sideburns/jaw…How long did it take you to grow thicker, terminal facial hair? Basically how long did it take until your beard hair looked like that of the cis male relatives in your family?

Angered by how I'm being treated by a white cishet partner of a trans friend of mine

For the full context: https://www.reddit.com/r/FreedTheNips/comments/1x2yt0w/went_with_a_friend_to_their_top_surgery_consult/

But I'm assuming you can see the issues here. For the first time I was a firm man towards this guy, this little cishet man wanted me to do internalised transphobia quizzes. Also look at the time stamps. Man lost so much sleep over me, even inviting me to roast him.

I'm just going to keep ignoring. Because this feels like harassment, transphobia and a lot of other things.

TL;DR context - I anonymously posted a vent online in a niche sub. Apparently my friend is also in that sub. And then their boyfriend has been spamming me with horrible messages, including fun little quizzes on my internalised transphobia, from a man who was the token straight guy at Pride.

Edit: This is also a close friend of many years (the one being defended by boyfriend in the above). This felt like bait. "Face me like a man" is so sickening, especially after this guy was going on about the patriarchy during Pride. I lose all IRL trans friends if I lose them. But so be it then, I guess.

Updated post: things got worse: https://www.reddit.com/r/TMPOC/comments/1x5wmrf/update_on_the_sitaution_with_my_friends_weird/

Final update: Thanks for everyone's encouragement. I ended the friendship. Their reaction and thaf of their partner made me realise I'd always been a friend of convenience or a token friend. I appreciate the kind, level-headed advice.

Vent I hate how presumptuous transphobic people are

Why do they think they know what is best for an entire minority while never having experienced being that minority themselves? Its borderline narcissism to assume you know someone youve never even met better than they know themselves. Ive seen so many cis women say trans men transition because of misogyny, abuse or autism, and when i tell them that I have never experienced abuse and im not autistic, they just insist i must have been. You dont even know me😭 I knew I didnt fit into being a girl before I even knew what misogyny was. I was 8. But nobody listens because they think your experience revolves around them. Once theyve successfully disenfranchised trans people, they will start using the same rhetoric for cis gays: “You are gay because of oppressive straight gender roles” “lesbians are lesbians because of misogynistic men.” This all gets conveniently dressed up as feminism so they have a seemingly progressive reason to control other people. They will say they dont want trans people (mainly talking about trans women) in their spaces, but when a trans man says he doesnt want to be in their spaces and he wants bodily autonomy, they will try and drag him in with them. I mean seriously, I think even before I myself knew I was trans, the most bigotry I had ever faced in real life was because of my race. If I really wanted to “mutilate myself to escape oppression” I wouldve just bleached or something but im not doing that because i know damn well my true self isnt white. Also what makes being trans “so much easier” in these peoples eyes than being a cis woman? Why would I choose to have people debate whether or not I deserve to live just because of who I am? Arguing with these people is fruitless too. Its like arguing with racists. Even if you tell them theyre objectively wrong they will not care because they want power over you.

Advice White trans friend and their partner cutting me off for finding a venting post about a situation involving them that I posted anonymously on Reddit.

You really can't trust many white trans people, can you? After going to a top surgery consult with them, being forced to be their partner without your consent (I only realised halfway through the consultation). You go with them to pride the next day, where you are neglected as a friend.

Anyway, I brought that up, and there cishet boyfriend sent me an internalised transphobia quiz and called me a misogynist. I've passed as a man for six months now, women's rights mean so much to me. He tore me apart, calling me a child and a horrible man, emhpasising how i wasn't a real man for the actions I'd done.

This is the post in question I made, they believe that it was misogynistic and wrong of me to do in the first place.

Post in question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/FreedTheNips/comments/1x2yt0w/went_with_a_friend_to_their_top_surgery_consult/

Also, if you found a vent about yourself online, fine. But this wasn't a vent. It was a discussion around the situation and I believe I wanted more opinions on. Is any of the language here towards my friend inflammatory? I want everyone's opinions here - if you dig into a niche sub and find my post, who is the onus on?

Her boyfriend made me feel like a scared girl again.

I don't have many BIPOC friends. The boyfriend cut me off, and my friend likely will too. And just because I spoke up about my experiences at the top surgery, and at Pride the day after where we were ignored. I'm the informed gay who looks things up and does all the connections for people, but I'm never asked to do the fun stuff.

This is a friend of 13 years. What do I do? They themselves have admitted to me they're working on racism.

Regarding the boyfriend, do I take him out or ignore him? He genuinely called me a child, got aggressive and said I was a misogynist with internalised transphobia. It felt so transphobic coming from a white cishet man, who is a child himself.

Update: I think he may have accessed more of my posts despite my account being privated. This is distressing. What should I do? When I made those post, he sent aggressive messages to me not half an hour after, and then said 'here's my Reddit username if you want to bash me" (bait) so I ignored him. If you're reading this, stop. Please. You're becoming the scary white man you don't want to be. I have his username but can't figure out if he has looked at this specific post, but he tracked down things in r/transmasc and r/FreedTheNips
