12 Hour Layover (5.05am - 7.20pm)
Hey everyone!
I'll be visiting Taiwan for the first time on 29 December during a layover from Australia to Canada. I'll be travelling solo and would appreciate some advice!
My flight details:
- Arrival: 5:05 AM at TPE Terminal 2
- Departure: 7:20 PM from TPE Terminal 2
- Plan: Return to the airport around 4:00–4:20 PM.
I've been considering an 8-hour private tour on Viator for around AUD $300, but I'm not sure if it's worth it for a solo traveller.
I also found the free half-day tours offered by Taiwan's Tourism Administration. Would it be better to do one of their morning tours and then explore independently afterwards?
I'm mainly interested in seeing some iconic landmarks, trying authentic Taiwanese food and getting some proper bubble tea! I was thinking of visiting Yongkang Street or somewhere similar after the tour.
I'm also curious about Taiwan's fashion and streetwear scene. Are there any cool local clothing brands or shopping areas worth checking out if I have time? It's not my biggest priority, though.
A few things I'm wondering:
- Is the free half-day tour worth doing, or would you recommend a private tour?
- Is it realistic to explore Taipei independently after the morning tour?
- What landmarks, food spots or bubble tea shops would you recommend?
- Is Taipei easy to navigate without speaking Mandarin?
- Should I prepare cash, an EasyCard or an eSIM beforehand, or can I sort everything out at the airport?
I don't want to cram too much into the day, but I'd love to make the most of my layover without stressing about missing my flight.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

若第一次來
可以參觀 Tapie 101
可以買門票上99樓
並且參觀92樓的阻尼球
大部分台北店員會說英語
公共運輸也有英語導覽
悠遊卡 eSIM 都可在機場照到資源

• Is the free half-day tour worth doing, or would you recommend a private tour?
Haven’t done any of those! I’m sure whichever one you choose will be good. But if you don’t choose any, public transportation is great. You can get an EasyCard at any 7-11 or Family Mart. You have to use a lot of cash in Taiwan, but there are ATMs in the convenience stores where you can get out cash easily. You can only fill your EasyCard with cash.
• Is it realistic to explore Taipei independently after the morning tour?
Depends on when the tour ends and what you see during it, but yes!
• What landmarks, food spots or bubble tea shops would you recommend?
A bubble tea shop I like is 北投紅茶 中山吉林店 and I get the Brown Sugar Bubble Oolong Tea. The reviews on Google Maps aren’t always accurate in Taipei. I found a lot of well rated things to not be as good as random spots I chose as I walked by. But there’s a lot of good bubble tea around Taipei. One of my favourite areas is definitely south of Dongmen station, a lot of cute shops and places to eat. It’s next to Yongkang street, which is super cute as well. Check out Huashan Creative Park if you have the time. The Zhongshan area is also really nice.
• Is Taipei easy to navigate without speaking Mandarin?
Yes!
• Should I prepare cash, an EasyCard or an eSIM beforehand, or can I sort everything out at the airport?
You can sort everything out there, but I would recommend preparing an eSIM on an app beforehand. Makes everything quicker, I found the airport wifi to not be very good.

haven't tried the tour tbh so i'm not sure the experience. however maybe because i'm a big DIY'er you can navigate a quick itinerary, most spots will be easy o get through via public transit.
i also do a 12 hour layover pretty much same schedule very often.
once you land get through the aiport get your esim and such you can pick up an easycard at the mrt station or the convenience store. take the airport express MRT takes you to taipei main station. if you land at 5:05 you get to main station around 7am.
first go get some breakfast.
which landmarks or iconic landmarks you want to visit? i would head to them after breakfast and then do it from until-> 11:30am or so.
then from 11:30 you can head to yongkang st, get food bubble tea etc -> go da'an check out streetware shops.
from there i would start heading back toward the airport
stop over at zhongshan there's some shopping/food options and then from there you can head to the airport
bubble tea lots of options in every district that are pretty good so don't need to worry
yes
you can do everything at the airport
