40k How to begin a Tau army

I want to begin Tau but I'm not sure where to start. I've seeing rumors about this army being the next codex drop so maybe its better to wait. I'm not sure which units take because i play every week warhammer and i want not just aesthetics but pieces i can play semi-competitive. Can you help me with that?

I like this combat patrol box. Even with the upcoming update, it's got a pretty generic and flexible core for any army: a pathfinder team, a fire warrior team with a Devilfish, and a crisis commander.

These units will almost certainly be viable regardless of whatever curveballs GW throws our way with the update next year.

And if you get things to go with it a unit of crisis suit is a must and broadsides are pretty good

It’s also a solid summary of the army. Multiple infantry squads with fancy guns, a hovertank and a mech.

Well strating out with breachers and stealth battlesuits is always a good option. In this higher toughness meta the punchy guns of breachers are great at taking out marines and stealth battlesuits are allways gonna be in meta due to being the best observers

I'd just be wary of Stealth Suits atm until we get word of the actual army rules.

Marines got completely reworked losing Oath of Moment and Custodes Martial Ka'tahs get massively retooled as well.

So we don't know, exactly, how For the Greater Good will get changed or of it will even be the army rule anymore.

I'd say for any newcomers who aren't willing to wait it out for the next few months, focus on getting units that are generically good at killing and mobility to create a core that can then be filled out later with support units whatever the new codex actually brings

Well i would also add the rule of cool i for example got into Warhammer 6 months ago and been having some job done, now i have a Pathfinder team , a broadside and i am working on a ghostkeel and some stealth suits, i know there will be changes but they just are gorgeous so even with different rules i wouldnt mind playing with some sturdier infantry who will probably get some interesting rules

Well stealth suits are a staple in any non kroot list and just got a model update, so those are a pretty safe purchase. Same with twin lance.

So with two stealth suits and a twin lance your at 400 + points to build and paint while you wait for codex announcements.

Pathfinders are one of the best units in the army. They always perform better than I expect.

The real question is do you want to buy/build/paint THEN play? Or buy and play? I’ve been painting for the past year cuz I’m slow and bought aesthetic units and I’m just going to buy the rest of my suit army cuz I’m not painting the same unit with a different gun 18 times for crisis suits I’m just lazy and I’ve accepted it. It’s just simpler for me and I don’t have the spare cash or time with being a new dad to buy a box buy paint and spend time doing all that when I can browse for a color scheme I like and start playing the moment they arrive in the mail
