I'm a weirdo in that the albums will always be associated with the season they came out in. I KNOW TTPD sounds like it should be autumn, but because it came out in spring and I spent like 4834589 minutes listening to it during April and May, it will always be a spring album! I wish I wasn't like this hahah.

I Knew It I Knew You is top-tier, one of her best tracks ever, and would be one of the strongest winners the best original song category has had in several years.
I also think splitting her SOTY and ROTY submissions at the Grammys is a wiser move than pushing Ophelia for both; ROTY rewards the hits, SOTY is a different game.

She just debuted The Fate of Ophelia for the first time ever 🧡 and she performed I Knew It, I Knew You, Blank Space, and Love Story! She also had a band, so it wasn’t just acoustic, as well as the backing singers from the Eras Tour ☺️ I think Paul Sidoti was on stage as well.

Recently had a random gut feeling that Opalite will be the next tour closer. I don't even know what her next album(s) will sound like, but I was listening to that song and had a premonition that that final chorus is gonna be the big climactic send-off whenever she tours again.
As for the opening song in the setlist... I'm leaning Elizabeth Taylor.

Can’t decide if I like the new piano version or acoustic version of Patient Zero more. I really like the slow “ahhs” in the background halfway through the piano version and how “had him” sounds empathized and ear-tingly. For the acoustic version I love just hearing the violin and guitar together. And the back half makes it soo different/its own thing. Kinda wish I could see a performance of this one

Hi, Swifties.
I’m dating a girl who loves Taylor Swift. She told me we should make a playlist together, and she made one, but she only added one song: “Begin Again.” I listened to it and realized that most of the things Taylor sings about actually happened on the few dates I’ve had with this girl, like going for coffee, being punctual, and opening the car door for her.
So, ngl, I think that’s kind of a hint.
Am I crazy or it’s like a kind of sign? I’m asking y’all because I’m not in like this Taylor Swift environment

I can’t say whether it’s intended as any specific “hint” or not (because of course I don’t know her, lol :P). But besides that, to me that sounds like just expressing that she appreciates you and your kindness, that perhaps it’s giving her a newfound sense of hope again ☺️.

Joe Garcia, the convicted murderer who wrote about his discovery of Taylor Swift's music in prison, has a short film about his parole process released: "Daylight", directed by Jon Kasbe.
Background for those who are unaware: In 2009, Garcia was sentenced to life in prison. In September 2023, he published an essay in The New Yorker: Listening to Taylor Swift in Prison.
Garcia received a parole hearing in April 2024. He was paroled on September 12, 2024, and reunited with his girlfriend, Ambere. In November, he attended the last Eras Tour concert in the US, in Indianapolis. He wrote about his parole process in a second essay: From Life in Prison to the Eras Tour.

I watched the video and really enjoyed it. It’s thought provoking how the Swiftie experience has common elements between people with very different life histories.
I had to laugh at the bit where he does some exercises, says he usually does 12, but did 13 cause it’s Taylor’s number. I, uh, may have been known to do the same…occasionally. For luck. 😅

I typically don't care about Taylor hate. Like, sometimes it's valid criticism that isn't my hill to die but I get it. Sometimes people just don't vibe with her or have a "bitch eating crackers" situation. That's fine, has nothing to do with me.
But ooh it's tiring lately. I typically avoid negative posts about her (bc I get how an algorithm works and would prefer content I enjoy lol) but complaints about her keep popping up in entirely unrelated areas.
It's to be expected - She was on top of the world during the Eras tour and the pendulum always swings back. But geeeeez

I agree, It's been constant lately. The hate hasn't quite gotten to the level of "Nazi MAGA tradwife" accusations that took place during TLOAS release last year, but it does feel more frequent. Stan twitter is the same mess it always is, TikTok is showing me Taylor hate every other video despite me constantly blocking them, and Reddit's posting negative headlines or plain hate towards Taylor in completely unrelated subs, getting thousands of upvotes while attracting the same "grubby billionaire capitalist politically self-serving artistically bankrupt jet user" crowd in the comments. Even posts in this fan sub sometimes seem to get hijacked by them.
At the very least, the hate's gotten so ridiculous and excessive to the point that in some ways, it's easier to shrug off because of just how absurd it all is. I mean, all of this over 4 new songs? Really?

I've developed a new connection to Babylon that I fear has changed the song for me forever. On Thursday, my 91 year old Nan had a heart attack and my entire family were basically told 'come home now if you want to say goodbye.' Me and my fiancé jumped in the car and rushed home (I live an hour away from my family) and on the journey Babylon came on and it just gave me all the feelings of not appreciating her enough or seeing her enough whilst she was alive. The 'it's almost gone' bit nearly floored me, I find it quite hard to listen to that part now. Anyway sadly I missed her by 10 minutes, but she's at peace now and I have a new Taylor Swift that has trauma attached to it.

I was thinking by listening some Showgirl songs.. i don't understand how some say that she does not write about Travis makes her feel.. i mean, The Fate Of Ophelia, Eldest Daughter, Whish List, Honey, Opalite all are about that. Even Wood, cuz there is nothing wrong saying how sexually you are satisfied lol

I know that Olivia used the melody from Taylor’s song New Year’s Day, and if I’m not mistaken, she gave Taylor credit for it. What I’m confused about is why some people were mad at Taylor because of that. Did Taylor say or do something wrong after that?

Olivia did interpolate New Year’s Day for her song 1 step forward, 3 steps back, but that’s generally not the credit people are mad at Taylor for. Taylor is also credited for Olivia’s song deja vu, which interpolates Cruel Summer.
Many people think the songs don’t sound very similar and believe that Taylor threatened Olivia to give credits (and thus 50% royalties). Olivia has stated on video that she was inspired by Cruel Summer’s bridge, but critics say Taylor shouldn’t have accepted credits regardless. As far as I know, there’s no hard evidence suggesting that Taylor actively sought credits for deja vu from Olivia. In fact, the only artist who accused Olivia of plagiarism was Josh Farro of Paramore who, alongside Hayley Williams, retroactively received writing credits for good 4 u.
Around this time, Olivia was a very vocal supporter of Taylor - her Spotify bio even said she was a huge swiftie. Likewise, Taylor acknowledged Olivia (and her friend Conan Gray) in her social media as well, such as reposting their excitement for her releases. Since then, however, they’ve both stopped publicly acknowledging each other, leading some to believe their relationship has soured (no pun intended) due the credits situation.

This is a good rundown. I’ll just add that at the same time, there was a big narrative around Olivia copying other artists. Beyond Cruel Summer and Misery Business, there was another riff by an artist that she got flack for. The narrative was out of control and I believe Olivia’s team freaked out and gave the credits.
Beyond that, Olivia did say on video that she wanted to mimic the Cruel Summer bridge, she had also said on video that she was inspired by the song, and there was a comment she made that she wanted Deja Vu to evoke Deja vu as if someone had heard her song before … I think she is immensely talented and I’m sure it was a hurtful situation for her. I don’t think Taylor is in the wrong though for accepting credits because she does have to protect her IP.
Since, Olivia has liked posts about Taylor and there are videos / photos of them at intimate events. Taylor claps for Olivia and I don’t think there is bad blood. Taylor will never address it, and I do think Olivia’s team uses that to her advantage.
Finally, if I were on Olivia’s team (I’m a marketer), I would have advised her to tone down the stan behavior. She did need to separate her brand from Taylor and from being a Swiftie in order to get where she wants to be. She has benefitted from the public goodwill she’s received for the credits situation and is somewhat positioned as the anti Taylor. 🤷🏼♀️
I’m fans of both artists so I hope this thread can stay positive and productive! I can’t comment in Olivia’s fan spaces at all because people are rabid to Swifties.

People who hate Taylor will make up any scenario in their head to hate her. Taylor suddenly getting credits and then Olivia going radio silent left an opening for the haters to create this narrative that Taylor sued Olivia because she was jealous of Olivia’s success.
That victim of Taylor’s jealousy narrative helped Olivia shake off the plagiarism allegations that circled her in 2021. Her fans and Taylor haters alike rallied to the defense of Olivia because, in their minds, Taylor was trying to destroy a young girl’s dream.
The narrative still helps her every single album cycle so she continues to milk it. Olivia could resolve the whole thing with a straightforward answer but refuses to do so. They are always these wishy washy answers that Taylor detractors can use to reinforce their hatred and strengthen her own fanbase loyalty.

Some people don't think it sounds like Taylor's song, and some do. The controversy is because the people who don't think Olivia copied Cruel Summer don't think Taylor should have credits, since it only sounds similar, not a direct copy. I will remain neutral about this matter.

Taylor got a writing credit on Olivia’s song “deja vu” for similarities to Taylor’s song “Cruel Summer” (whether you believe that to be true is ultimately up to the listener). Who pursued the credit has not been revealed, the only time it was ever talked about was in an interview with Jack Antonoff where he said “I had never met her, and I had never been in a room with her. So it’s interesting… because another song on that album, that was an interpolation of [the Antonoff co-written Swift song] ‘New Year’s Day’. But yeah, it came through the channels that the bit on ‘Deja Vu’ was inspired by that bridge and we were going to be credited, and I thought that was really cool.”
Olivia stopped talking about or interacting with Taylor after that and Taylor stopped talking about/interacting with Olivia.

Then I went back to albums and put on Leonard Cohen's Live In London
So I got to go immediately from "you never know that it was Babylon ..." to "... like they do in Babylon"

So I'm s Constant Reader, reading Stephen King's new release Other Worlds Than These. Taylor and Stevie are my two favorite artists. The only connection I know of is when she was doing a bit on the Stephen Colbert show, after Fearless TV came out. He insisted Hey Stephen was about him. She said no, it's about Stephen King. While rattling off the books of his she's read, she said, "The Dark Tower series changed my life." Now, do I really think she read that 7(8) book magnum opus? No. But if she did, that would blow my mind.
Since then he's said he listens to her music, and it makes him happy.
Back to the new book...in one paragraph he uses the phrases all too well and long story short. Later he writes "We ain't Starsky and Hutch, and this ain't Hollywood." That gets The Tortured Poets Department in my head. Four pages later he mentions the Chelsea Hotel!
The latter reference to her lyrics, I'm sure, is a coincidence. The former probably is too, but who knows?

I have now fathomed Showgirl.
I struggled to understand how the songs connected with each other, but the thesis statement for the album is right there on the title track: You don't know the life of a showgirl, babe, and you're never gonna wanna.
The main point that TLOAS is making is that fans constantly expect vulnerability from an artist - a look behind the curtain and into their personal life. But what they are really looking for is a performance of vulnerability that fits within their conception of the showgirl. As soon as this boundary is breached, the vulnerability is no longer desirable. On TLOAS, Taylor gave us a peek behind the curtain. It is her most honest album. Songs like Cleveland! and Wood feature some of her most direct, blatant lyrics. The whole point is to emphasize that real vulnerability and sincerity can be perceived as harsh, cringeworthy, and indelicate. Eldest Daughter perfectly encapsulates this sentiment as the emotional core of the album. The question she is asking is: "Do you really think you can handle the look behind the curtain?". For many, the answer is no - they would rather continue to watch the performance.
I love this album so much more now. She outdid herself.

Honestly I’m very bummed out by my conversations with one of my close friends about the encore, he was extremely negative and sharing the talking points used in the media about how ts has lost her touch etc and it was really annoying me. The level of scrutiny seems exaggerated, it’s just a pop album. Other pop stars make similar types of “basic” songs and it’s fine (eg house tour by Sabrina C) but ts can never do anything right. My friend was also super harsh with ttpd and now loves it.. he has so much contempt for ts right now just cause of tloas but like It’s really not that serious

Your friend kinda sucks. Obviously friends don’t have to agree on everything, but there’s a difference between not liking something and constantly shitting on something they know brings you happiness. That’s just mean and unnecessary.
The scrutiny around Taylor is also completely disproportionate at this point. Other pop stars can release a silly, simple, fun pop song and everyone understands exactly what it is, but when Taylor does it suddenly people are analyzing it like it’s evidence in a criminal trial... However that's besides the point because none of these songs are silly pop songs.

I love Taylor, but I understood some of the initial reticence to TTPD. It was big and wordy and sad and we were all thrown by how present MH was in it. I somewhat understood the Showgirl hate from some people—it’s all glitter gel pen and self-aware cringe and that’s not for everyone. But I honestly do not understand how people don’t like at least some of these 4 new songs? They are so good 😭 I love them more than anything she’s done since the 1989 TV vaults. Pink Clouding is SUCH an earworm, I can’t stop singing it. Patient Zero is a bop. Babylon is full of her rich storytelling. 10/10!

I think some people just love to hate Taylor at this point because social media has somehow turned not liking her into this weird badge of moral and intellectual superiority. Like if you don’t listen to Taylor, you’re supposedly more enlightened, have better taste or aren’t brainwashed by capitalis. It’s gotten so performative that I honestly don’t think some people even approach the music normally anymore. They go into every release already determined to find something embarrassing or terrible about it because liking her would ruin the identity they’ve built around being above her.

my beautiful friends, this feels like a safe place, i’m usually very much not caring about criticism towards her music, especially right after a release lmfao but a post popped up from an influencer snark sub and there were comments calling her music “music for horse girls that never left high school” i got clocked so fucking bad y’all 💀 autistic horse girl found dead
but i like what i like so hate all you like i suppose. people are so miserable!

Any other parents of small children who are now in love with “I Knew It, I Knew You” because of Toy Story 5 (which just came out on Disney+ and will probably be on heavy rotation for weeks?) Rhymes with nifties, TrueNifties and my favorite, stonednifties are all pretty good places overall right now for Encore appreciators.
But good gods, don’t go near anything neutral or the bigger pop subs. They’re frenzying to express their hatred of encore and Taylor with disturbing intensity.

No confirmation but honestly I think it's mostly timeline. Her first album that came out after they broke up was also after she'd had a rebound relationship and then moved on to a more serious relationship. Joe understandably dominated reputation as the main subject.
There's more about him than people say, though: he's the ex in Getaway Car, the current boyfriend in Gorgeous, "younger than exes" in Ready For It is more likely shade at Calvin than anyone else, "all the boys with their expensive cars, their Range Rovers" in King Of My Heart1, This Is What You Came For, High Infidelity, maybe I Forgot That You Existed (I think he's at least one of the main inspirations but it's ambiguous enough that I'm not going to try to take a stance).
1 and also my unsourced theory for the same song that the opening lyrics (up through "trying on clothes") were originally written about Calvin, set aside to go back to later, and then repurposed, just cuz the timeline described makes more sense to me that way. absolutely will not die on this hill.

it does match the Showgirl theme as in going to the big city to chase your dreams of becoming famous and working your ass off for it, but it coming at the cost of your relationships/not feeling fulfilled and unable to appreciate the now. it's the yearning for the simpler life.

I don’t understand why every time Taylor releases a new song or album, so many people criticize the songwriting and production as if they expect everything she does to be even better than the last thing she did. She has always been so talented in songwriting all the way from debut to tloas: the encore. Saying that she has done better than this before so it’s disappointing doesn’t make sense because each song is different and written for a different reason and with different themes in mind. Not every song or album has to have the same vibe or songwriting style. It’s fun for her discography to be a mixture of different genres and styles and songwriting. I also don’t understand how songs that are happy, catchy, upbeat, fun, and maybe even a bit comedic/sarcastic or whatever, are considered to be not as good of songwriting as melancholic, slow, songs. Being able to write many different types of songs is talent and I love that Taylor does this. I view her songwriting just as amazing in those fun, happy songs as I do the sad, emotionally heavy songs. Okay, rant over, I just had to defend my girl for a minute.

Ugh, agreed. If I may add a rant, I was just thinking that sometimes even some comments defending her songs (definitely not yours, just to clarify 😊) come off a little...backhanded? They imply that she's writing some songs "bad on purpose" - be it for "satire" or "trolling the trolls", etc...but like, what makes them even think what she's writing is "meant to be bad" in the first place??
Using 'Cleveland!' as an example since I've seen it be picked on the most :P: I love musical theatre, so immediately I LOVED the whole musical/instrumental vibe from the get-go! Plus the use of a snare drum rhythm to mimic a marching band and thus the whole "school/team spirit" vibes of something like football - brilliant 😎! The unfinished rhymes are so fun to sing along to, puns like "the taste of me is acquired, but it's his favorite dish" sound so sweet, and I think the sardonic tone of the lyrics and their delivery characterizes the song so cleverly! Perhaps it's out-of-the-box compared to typical "standards" of pop music; but obviously, out-of-the-box does not make it "wrong" or "bad" or "lesser quality"!! And we really don't have to label it "cringey" or "corny" either to justify it as genuinely good. Like, it feels like some people are assessing her music just with the context of her persona and not within the actual context of ART itself !?
Cheery, sassy songs are allowed to be just as acclaimed as "tortured" ones; IT'S ALL MUSIC DANG IT!!!

I also loved Cleveland! and I’ve also always loved songs that get hated on for being fun (like ME!, Shake It Off, Stay Stay Stay for examples). It’s like some people are allergic to fun songs🤨 and to your point, just because they are fun doesn’t mean they are “bad” or “cringy” and they actually are just as good as other songs and are a different type of art that just as impressive and amazing2

It’s a very different vibe to be honest. The Anti-Hero ft. Bleachers remix is a good example of their overall sound but it’s not definitely the same type of pop as Taylor and Sabrina.

I kind of love and respect how we haven’t seen Taylor and Travis’ wedding photos.
Taylor was out at a wedding with a new haircut after the wedding, and people totally trashed her look. Now she releases 4 songs and people can’t just form their own opinion and move on, the haters have to make sure anyone who likes the songs knows there’s something wrong with them.
In what universe would Taylor ever share something so private and personal as what he wedding dress looked like?
My god she can’t even attend a football game and say “that’s my husband” after he scores a touchdown without some ridiculous vitriol.
Keep the wedding photos private girl. You have my full support.

Agree. People have been vile toward her lately. Ever since TTPD. I would love to see the dress but I don't want the horrible people to see it. And anyone saying these songs are bad is just wrong; all four of these songs have very good lyrics and good melodies. Pink clouding was the one I found the least immediately catchy and it has been stuck in my head all day today. Taylor and max write earworms (in a good way).

Fans are allowed to not like this album, and discuss their feelings about it online just like people who do like it.
However, the “fans” up in the comments trying to shame fans who enjoy the album, saying bad things about Taylor’s marriage because they don’t like this album, and saying they want Taylor to stop releasing music until she releases what they like…sound like haters 🫣
I have a least favorite album that isn’t Showgirl, you never find me going around telling people how wrong they are for liking it and how wrong Taylor is for daring to release it.
