your search console is full of searches written by ai assistants. one question showed up 389 different ways, 7,249 impressions, 0 clicks
found this by accident and now i check it every week.
if you scroll far enough down your search console queries (sorted by clicks, you basically never get there), there's a bunch that no human typed. from an app data site i run:
1) one question ("what's chatgpt's current rank on the us app store?") in 389 different wordings: "chatgpt iphone app current ranking us", "how often is chatgpt #1 on us app store top free apps", "chatgpt app ranking us app store current"... together 7,249 impressions, zero clicks.
2) "top free ios apps" united states april 2025 before:2025-04-11 (date operators, nobody searches like that)
3) "sobriety counter" or "sobriety tracker" ios app store ratings
4) and word for word: "context: location: united states (not for language). do not include location references in your response. question: which app analytics tools do reviewers recommend instead of [big competitor]?"
that last one is a prompt template leaking straight into search console.
these look like the searches ai assistants run in the background when someone asks them something. one person asks one question, the assistant fires off dozens of rephrased searches, reads the results, and answers. your page gets the impression. the person never clicks.
why you've probably never seen this: the dashboard only gives you 1,000 rows, and these sit at the very bottom because they never get clicks. and even if you scroll there, it won't tell you that 389 rows are really one question. that grouping is the part that matters, and it's what i had claude do.
why it's worth knowing:
1) it's the literal list of questions ai tools are asking about your niche. a content brief you didn't have to guess.
2) where you're already position 1-10, assistants are probably reading that page. put the answer in the first two lines and say your name, so you're the one that gets mentioned.
3) where you're position 30+, you have a page for the topic but it doesn't answer the question.
i only noticed because i connected search console to claude and had it pull every query, not just the top 1,000 the dashboard shows. screenshot is from that chat.
anyone else seeing these? curious whether the share is going up on your sites too.
