Discussion Understanding Brain Drill

How did they actually conceive this stuff? Did one of them ever say “that’s too much”? Probably not. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really on MySpace back when it was really active so I can’t tell, and I only started really listening to them when I heard they split up in 2019. It did take me a long time to appreciate Quantum Catastrophe though.

They got a lot of flak for being “too technical”, alright, but I don’t think many were doing it like them and Viraemia back then. The music they made was the name of the band.

The bassist on Apocalyptic Feasting (Jeff Hughell) wrote Bury The Living according to lord Marco, but how about the rest? I would assume that Ruskin did most of the heavy lifting. Also the last image is Ruskins’ solo project, Stellae Ignotus.

I don’t even know what to say in this post, it seems like they will forever impress me.

They are more responsible than any other band for getting me into tech death (honorable mentions: Necrophagist and Blotted Science), because I discovered they were excellent for playing in the stereo to get drunks out the door at closing time. While I used the music as a weapon, at some point I realized I actually enjoyed it myself!

I love Servile Insurrection! Unfortunately the band wasn’t on my radar when they were putting out albums, discovered them like a decade later

That’s my jam and I first heard about em in 09. I wish they put out more albums but such is life.

Whats there to understand? They smoked insane amounts of weed and shredded our faces off. Peak 2000s metal band. Fortunate tonhave seen them once.

Haven't thought of these guys in years and tbh had no idea there was "controversies" surrounding them.

They rocked the fuck out of my middle of nowhere town ages ago and that's all I remember from them. They were nice dudes in person too.

ain’t much to understand. pretty easy to fake some bullshit with decent enough daw skills. people hated this band when they were new because their shit sounded fake as hell. similar to the hate against dragonforce.

it’s honestly mildly shocking people are still talking about them, i genuinely don’t get why. they have more in common with electronic music (fake and made with a computer) than actual guitar based death metal which i guess is fine but it ain’t legit. they were the berried alive of 2006. always thought they sucked ass.

What makes you say braindrill is fake?

-7

u/bkkgnar 2d ago

clearly you don’t play guitar

There were several videos of bro ripping the riffs back when they first came out. I think it’s you who has limits on his own capabilities to think playing these riffs are impossible.

lmao. I do, and Braindrill's guitars are definitely not fake. I even learned bits of their songs once.

Bet you also believe Viraemia, Sleep Terror, Monumental Torment, Cytotoxin, or Archspire are fake (bands in order from most to least impressive guitar work).

Just because you're not too technically proficient doesn't mean that others can't be.

Eh the answer is somewhere in between, they can play their stuff but metal audiences have a pretty low bar for live performance/the volume can hide egregious errors quite easily. For example a lot of these bands record using a string mute and play live without, which is good enough for a live performance but not really acceptable on a studio record.

Lmao if you don’t think 99% of modern tech death isn’t edited to hell and back

u/shitterbug Blast beats are love blast beats are life 2d ago

but an incredible drummer, despite his dumb faking that one time

What was Marco's other band, like Vital Remains or something? That was a pretty dope band.

He only played live for them on one tour

They stripped me naked had me lift my ballsack up so they could check underneath it, and then had me bend over and spread my asscheeks apart so they could look inside my asshole.

Real ones know

This is the first thing that comes to mind when Im reminded of Brain Drill

Am I the only one that doesn’t see what’s so “controversial” about their music? I’ve heard a lot of brutal tech death and I don’t ever hear anyone calling the other bands soulless guitar wankery. They definitely didn’t create the style.

Same, didn't know about any controverse until I joined this. Been listening to them on and off for years, Viraemia aswell.

The thing about Brain Drill that’s really funny to me is after their lineup imploded, two of the members (Jeff Hughell and Marco Pitruzzella) ended up in Six Feet Under. How do you go from showing off your virtuoso skills in a “too technical” band to as basic and easy as you can get. They must get so bored😂

Watching them play live and in 6 Feet music videos is hilarious. Absolute boredom on display.

If you haven't watched or listened to the (Beyond the Metalverse interview with Jeff, he goes into his experiences with both bands. It's a good watch.

u/Slight_Parsley_4860 2d ago

Yeah it kills me that Jeff especially just sits in that band, releasing cookie cutter death metal. But if it pays the bills I can’t hate it

I owned apocalyptic feasting when it came out. was listening to sleep terror as well at the time.

u/IdRatherProlaspe 1d ago

Sleep terror will forever be goated

u/chessmasterjj 1d ago

yeah i think probing tranquility had just come out. and an even lesser known band slaughterbox. they fucking ripped

I feel like at their core they are BDM with the purpose being that beat down extremity. I’ve heard mostly that they are “riff salad” but I feel that comes from tech fans being like “none of these parts melodically fit together and it’s just extreme” and it’s like yeah, welcome to BDM where ripping your face off constantly is the point.

Also fucking Viraemia! I remember that EP, gotta listen to that today.

Not much to understand, they were a meme when they came out that released catchy material. Said material is now looked back on with nostalgia and other new bands have taken their sound as an influence. But I’m pretty sure even they had the intention of starting out meme like.
