Kansas City BBQ

Alright you Kansas City people. I am currently in Kansas City and want to try either Arthur Bryant’s or Gates. Which one do you recommend? I will not be able to go to both as I’m the only one in the group who enjoys bbq, I barely got them to agree to go to one

Q39 or Jackstack

Jacks stack is the king.

I was just in KC and tried a bunch of the popular spots - Would strongly recommend Q39. Has good options for non-bbq lovers too.

My favorite is Joe's KC.

The 'Joe' of Joe Arthur Gatestack.

This is the way.

Arthur Bryant's is absolute garbage. Visited in July and could not have been more disappointed. The sauces are so gross, particularly the traditional one. We also went to Slaps and it was fantastic.

Slaps is one of my top five.

My wife went there for work and she sent me bbq from several places. I think you should go to one and order online from another. No such thing as too much bbq.

A couple of years ago a friend from the UK came to KC for a week. We sent him home with meat sweats and a longing for Boulevard Wheat and Tank 7.

Joe’s

All of these comments are from people that just visit. We go to LCs BBQ, located next to a motel that charges by the hour and a junk yard.

My first visit was life changing

If it still hasn’t been decided go to Joes KC.

If it’s between AB or Gates be prepared to be yelled at Gates and whatever meat you order ask for it lean at Gates.

Not a fan of Arthur Bryant’s sauces but the brisket sandwich and fries would be my pick if you’re already down this road. Get it dry as they have sauces at the table you can try for yourself.

If you do go to Joes KC get the burnt ends and thank me later.

Yelled at Gates? I have never been to KC. Why Gates yell at anyone?

It’s part of their schtick at this point. They even sort of show it in episode one. Out of towners are not ready for it. When the place gets busy, which on weekends = yes, it can be loud and they want to get that line moving as quick as possible.

Ahh so Gates was in S4E1. I don’t think I caught the place’s name. Ty

Yes, Gates was the curved booth place where Rebecca fell in love with ribs.

Q39 or Joe’s

OG? Go Arthur Bryant’s. Q39 is outstanding, but several places are. Arthur Bryant’s will be a core memory.

I have to disagree. Arthur Bryant’s used to be the OG back in the day. It has been going downhill. The restaurant was closed a while back because of some health concern.

Out of those two, I’ll be honest - Arthur Bryant’s has gone downhill a bit so I’d pick Gates. Joe’s is the best BBQ in KC.

Every time I’m there I go to Jack Stack

Because it’s really good but also feels like a proper restaurant

I typically prefer bbq from a building that looks like it should be condemned, but Jack Stack is the exception to that rule.

So…Woodyard or is it LC’s?

2

u/ThreeTo3d 4h ago

Nothing was better than getting some LC’s before a Royals game. The smoker 5 feet behind the register.

u/Maverick_1882 Roy Kent 3h ago

LC’s rocks. I won’t send any of my family, who are more comfortable in JoCo, to LC’s. They can handle Slaps, but not LC’s.

I was also going to recommend Jack Stack. Joe's is also very good.

Jack stack is my favorite

Arthur Bryant’s

Flip a coin, and then pick up a bottle of the sauce from whichever one you didn't go to.

There are better places in the city than both (particularly Q39 and Joes), but both are about the experience.

If you're in it for that, you can't go wrong with either, but AB you can't FEEL the history there.

Both also have this smell that can't be faked. From over a hundred years of the walls just soaking in meat smoke.

No matter where you end up. Make sure you get an order of burnt ends.

Q39, Joe’s KC, Char Bar, Slaps, or Jack Stack are the ones I recommend to out of towners. There are other nuanced answers, of course, when you want a different flavor profile or experience.

Joes or Q39!

1

u/ApatheticAbsurdist 2h ago

I’ve never been but a coworker of mine spent a lot of time in KC and they seem to swear by Joe’s. And get the burnt ends.

Arthur Bryant's all day. Did not care for Gates. Hit up the Negro League/Jazz Museums before or after as it's nearby.

those are the 2 best. bryants has way more meat. gates has better sauce. you cant go wrong either way.
