Tesla drivers have been bitching about shitty auto wipers since the S, at this point I feel like they're just refusing to address it to fuck with us
25
u/Kahnspiracy 3d ago
If they fixed the software, I'd pay for the $5 rain sensor myself.
20
u/ShortTheseNuts 3d ago
I live where it rains over 300 days a year. The fucking wipers are literally an every day problem and Tesla just refuses to acknowledge it.
14
u/Da_Spooky_Ghost 3d ago
I wish someone like S3XY dash would just make a Bluetooth rain sensor for Tesla’s. Just adhesive mount on the front of the dash under the windshield and they could make so much money from every single Tesla driver.

u/Galactic-Buzz 2d ago
Woah, where is that? Is it heavy book reading rain or just dreary out
1
u/ShortTheseNuts 1d ago
Bergen, Norway. And it's a mix but usually heavier. All the water sucked up from the Atlantic current gets dumped here against the mountains. Unique meteorological spot.

Have you had a car with rain sensors? They’re no better.
9
3
u/rotarypower101 3d ago
Well they can’t be worse, and the vast majority believe they are consistently better from empirical experiences on many different platforms.
It’s such an inexpensive addition, wish a 3rd party built a standalone rain sensor that could intigrate into the OEM system on the switch with user adjustable speed, sensitivity, delay cadence.

u/TeamRedundancyTeam New to the sub 3d ago
I feel like I'm the only person who has never had an issue with the wipers? My only problem is occasionally they will wipe one time at random, no rain, but it's just one up and down.
21
u/fellbound 3d ago
When you can fly above the rain, you don't need windshield wipers.
/s
6
u/hmspain 3d ago
If you can go 0-60 in less than a second, anything on your windshield is pretty much gone. /s
6
u/ShortTheseNuts 3d ago
As someone who commutes at 250km/h on the Autobahn, this is surprisingly not true with the Model Y. It's like the wind almost locks the water in place passing over it and the car.
3
u/Inevitable_Ad_711 3d ago
As someone who commutes through deadlocked Los Angeles traffic weekly, 155mph sounds like a nice change😂
12
u/Equivalent-Love-1676 3d ago
LOL seriously though. What does a dedicated sensor cost, like really?
14
u/thirdeyefish 3d ago
No sensors. Vision will solve everything. Everything. Only cameras and compute.
Seriously, though. I would like some of the sensors we used to have back. They did a better job.
6
u/PoopyInThePeePeeHole 3d ago
<Sees clear blue sky with no objects>
Must be raining! Engage wipers at maximum!
4
u/Equivalent-Love-1676 3d ago
They really, really did. But hey, Tesla might be saving 53¢ and 14 milliwatts per car LOL
7
u/PoopyInThePeePeeHole 3d ago
I can guarantee you the CPU/compute cycles the car uses to struggle to determine the presence of rain consumes FAR more energy than a dedicated sensor.

My wipers always seem to go off automatically at at two specific locations in my neighborhood.
Usually just smears. But why? There is no consistency, as it happens in the day and at night. Always the same two spots though.
7
u/RealPropRandy 3d ago
Oh hey fresh bird shit. Lemme smear that for ya.
You’re welcome.
Hey why did you disengage FSD? Tell me. Tell me now.
4
u/Ok_Main1059 3d ago
Lord this reminds me when the car told me to take over immediately so I did and it asked why I disengaged… like why do you think??

same. It would be fine if it remembered the last setting and didn't turn it on when you enable FSD.

4
u/TwiceInEveryMoment 3d ago
It fucks up both ways too. There have been plenty of times where it's raining so hard visibility is limited to a couple car lengths, and the auto wipers don't come on at all, or they do, at the lowest speed.
3
u/Evening-Juggernaut50 New to the sub 3d ago
I've had more issues with the heating/cooling system. I am always trying to adjust it to make it comfortable. It's like the fans are too loud, so turn it down, then it gets too hot, then too cold... and sometimes it says the car is on max cooling (I'm in SoCal which has been sooo hot this summer) and the fan speed is auto at like 3. I don't get why I am always having issues with it.

My sweaty little boy will and my wife will get in the back seat and the seat belt alarm will go crazy but the rear ac won’t turn on automatically
3
u/Anand999 3d ago
What's annoying is that the car has access to weather data, including weather radar. Why can't they use that as an input into their wiper algorithm?
Weather says it's a bright sunny day? Bias the algorithm towards not turning on the wiper. Rainy day? Crank that sensitivity up.
7
u/Active_Wasabi_1141 New to the sub 3d ago
Or. Or. How about they use the proven technology every other car has used for the last 30 years?
2
u/Anand999 3d ago
I'm with you on that, I'm just throwing out a suggestion for how the auto wipers can be improved on the millions of Teslas that are already on the roads.
1
u/Active_Wasabi_1141 New to the sub 3d ago
Fair play. Given they’ve already made the bad design decision to not put in the traditional sensor, how to improve it today.
10
u/EuphoricCrashOut New to the sub 3d ago
It. Does. Not. Fly.
When it goes down a road and literally takes to the air like Back to the Future, flies around in the air for 5 or 10 minutes, and then lands back on the road... and continues driving... THEN I'll say it's a cool flying car. NOT A MOMENT EARLIER. I don't care how many falling barrel rolls it can do.
All you people calling it a flying car are making us all look like morons, and I hate it.

Controversial take but I haven’t had as much problems with the automatic wipers
7
u/scarface910 3d ago
Yeah it's a non issue for me. The constant lane changes and the lack of an option to stay in one lane or set speed on FSD is what annoys me to no end.
2
2
u/LouisWinthorpe-III New to the sub 2d ago
Isn't that chill and sloth (at least with respect to staying in one lane)? My FSD disengagements seen to be based on Tesla's stance of "Google maps can map roads better than us" even though Tesla has millions of cars that could be reading speed limit signs, mapping work zones, and flagging google map errors on a daily basis.
1
u/scarface910 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah chill and sloth does help with lane changes but I would love to set speed so that I'm not driving at 62mph in the right lane while everyone else goes 70+
And im with you on the maps, I have to disengage because FSD likes to go to the exit lane 2 exits before my actual one.

u/Arespect New to the sub 10h ago
Talked to many Tesla owners throught the year in different parts of europe due to traveling and all had the issue.
Your issue is, lucky you aparently do not have the problem and when then others complain they do, you feel like they are making stuff up.
My wipers will activate randomly in perfect weather, will go fast for no reason when it just dribbles and the other day never activated even tho the whole windshield was full of water.
I've been to service and they said it works as intended, its still a beta.
I'm now at the point where it do not have Automatic on at all, its not a big issue for me, I'm capable of pressing a button every now and then :D. But given that I hardly know a tesla owner who doesnt have the issue, and then seeing you here being all "Oh its individuall cases". Sounds so much like when politics try to talk down a real social issue :d

I dunno. Yesterday I was on the road for 3+ hours during wet/rainy conditions (half durng daylight and half during nighttime hours). Heavy rain, drizzle, no rain but spray from cars ahead (which always used to be a huge problem in the past for the autowipers)
...and the wipers worked flawlessly. Like...WTF? Was there an update to the algorithm recently? Whoever did that at Tesla, I'd like to buy them a beer. It took 8 years but now it actually works!
1
u/Goman83 1d ago
The wipers are the worst of the whole car. So annoying. Today on a roadtrip I think I had to intervene 30 times. On my last Hyundai I never even thought about wipers anymore. This is purely Elon Ego here that camera’s can do it all. Well… they can’t. I’m a big fan of my Model Y, but this is just stupid.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a vehicle with properly functioning auto wipers. Maybe I’m missing out, idk.
So far I prefer all my old vehicles with manually operated set and forget, no mental gymnastics other than changing 1 of 4 settings on the stalk.
