[McMahon] Dave Hakstol will be the new Arizona State head coach.
Doesn’t look ideal but at least it’s good the school is done with Powers for good.

He won like a half dozen conference championships at UND and didn’t kill anybody

Why is it not ideal? Highly successful NCAA head coach (1 title and 6 Frozen Fours in 11 seasons) who also has like seven years of NHL head coaching experience (three playoff appearances). If you count his time in the USHL, his teams have made the postseason in 17 of his 22 seasons as head coach. He knows how to recruit, has strong ties to some of the most talent-rich parts of the country (northern great plains, not to mention his Canadian ties), and should be able to sell recruits on being able to get them ready to be pros.

Compare that with Powers whose only real qualification was that he played club hockey for ASU. He was HC by default. He is ending his career with basically zero accomplishments.

I'm not happy with the lack of playoff appearances under Powers, but ASU might still be a club team without him.
I wish him well. Hope he lands somewhere good.

By “lands somewhere good“ do you mean like one of the nicer prisons?

Come on. You think he intentionally harmed his player?
Congrats on meeting the reddit stereotype.

"You think he intentionally harmed his player?"
No, but that is only relevant for a murder charge. The accounts I have read point more towards negligent homicide in that Powers seems to have "failed to perceive a substantial risk that a reasonable person would have recognized." The minimum sentence there is one year with the standard sentence being 2.5 years. That doesn't mean that he will be charged, of course.

The kid is in a coma. Powers wasn't there. There had previously been no injuries or concerns with other workouts. No warning signs about this trainer that were ignored. Thousand of athletes across the country practice or work out in higher temperatures.
I get it. Everybody wants somebody to blame. If I was that family you'd be dang sure I'd be hunting for a scalp as well.
But, this was a freak accident. No negligence. And certainly no intent.

The state's attorney's office might see it differently.

Heck, even if it is just an endangerment charge (likely a Class 6 felony in this case), which should be a low bar to clear if even half of the allegations in this case hold up, then Powers would be looking at 6-12 months of jail time plus a six figure fine.

The kid is brain dead. And where the fuck do you get that Powers wasn’t there. He was there as were all the coaches. The trainer guy left early and Powers ran the rest of the workout himself. Her was THE coach there when Mayich collapsed, not the trainer. He couldn’t be more negligent if he tried. It’s a slam dunk case. I suggest you read up on what exactly happened because you sound clueless.

Powers didn’t get canned for a lack of Frozen Four appearances. He put a player in a coma

You're so right. He told that 3rd party trainer to make sure his own player got injured.
Clown.

He failed in his duty of care to that young man.
He hired Ziesel, without consulting the university.
He allowed Ziesel to run the work out and deny water to players.
He is 100% responsible for the injury to Mayich.

I do not wish him well, what the fuck are you talking about 😂 His actions led to the death of one of his players. Fuck him.

If guys would come play for him in Sioux Falls they’ll sure as hell come play in Tempe

That is the hope, though the difference in program prestige between N, Dakota and ASU is massive. I certainly think he has enough pieces to put together a compelling sales pitch to top recruits, though.

For real. This is about as close to ideal as you could possibly get.
In my most unrealistic, dream scenarios, I would have included a call to Hakstol. I didn’t think this was a real possibility, it’s such a great hire.

My only concern is that he might lose interest once his son is no longer at ASU (he is a FR on our ACHA II club team).

Let’s just hope this guys doesn’t get any of his players killed.

Unlike Powers, whose main talent was kissing booster butt, Hakstol is bona fide

Im actually shocked that the program managed to swing such a big hire in the hockey space. Hakstol hasnt coached college in almost a decade (been around the NHL since then), but his tenure in NCAA hockey was phenomenal.
Coached 11 seasons, made the playoffs all 11. 7 of those 11 his team made it to the Frozen Four. His overall record is 289-143-43, which is insane for hockey.
It also means that there is zero room for interpretation about Powers' future with the program. Hakstol doesnt take this job if it is interim or anything like that. Powers is done, as is likely most of the current staff, that will inevitable be replaced quickly with Hakstols people.
