/r/Theatre 'Vent and Rant' Megathread

Here is the monthly thread for all your venting and ranting needs. If you need to let off some steam and complain about something going on in your theatre community (be it professional, community, or school), you can comment about it here.

This space is primarily for commiserating about frustrating experiences, and not meant to be a place to seek advice or solve problems (you can make a post with the 'Advice' flair for that). However, you are free to indicate if you would or would not be open to advice if anyone has any.

As always, all community and sitewide rules apply, especially civility.

High School/College Student i messed up super bad by changing my hair just after getting cast in a production.

like the title says, im an idiot. I completely forgot about the show and excitedly changed my hair. im pretty new to theatre, and its a HS production. We've had one rehersal so far and I was cast as the wicked witch due to my black and green hair. I'm sure I was cast for other reasons too, but that might've been the main contender. anywho how cooked am I? I sent a VERY apologetic email that was me owning up to my huge mistake. what are the odds Ill get kicked out? I've been so inconsiderate and I genuinely feel TERRIBLE. #scaredasfuck

edit: its BRIGHT orange. fuck this

Advice Theatre career path

Starting out with theatre at college, I was wondering for those who also started with theatre was it worth it to you? And what were the classes like? What were the opportunities brought to you due to doing theatre? What careers did you pursue with the degree earned for it?

Advice How to play a narrator

Ik ben gecast als verteller in een toneelstuk. Er zijn ook nog 2 andere vertellers. Ik heb het echt lastig met acteren. Mijn regisseur zei ons via-via dat we saai zijn. Hoe kan ik het beter doen?

Edit: The play is Icarus.

High School/College Student School not allowing me to compete in state theater competition

Hi guys ☹️☹️ posting here just bc I'm really upset about it. So my school is a big theater HS and our state holds competitions. For the past 30 years in a row we have won states every single year except for 2 years. I go to this school part time, and attend early college courses the other time. I want to get my BFA. I transferred to this school this August just for the theater.

I was told today that I'm not allowed to be in the musicals that we take to states because I'm not a full time student. Im so devistated. I've genuinely been crying for hours. I don't know what to do. Our director already tried appealing to the state to have an exception made, but it didn't work. I just can't stop crying

My school is upset as well as me. I am playing a side character this fall in our show (Specs in Newsies in a cast of about 100 students and 200 auditions) they wanted to be able to take me to states with them, but they can't. We are all so upset

For my course at uni we have to write an essay on how Laban efforts can be observed in a play, having to reference a live performance. Anybody know where I can find a professional recording of it?

Fascinating dissemination of the intersection of acting out a story in a public venue with an audience of 600 vs what it means to act out a story in your own home with an audience of 6.

This take is very Brechtian-heavy, I always felt a home storytelling experience to be closer to a folk art that lies somewhere closer to Forum theatre.

Discussion Recently tried out for first community theater production never once acted.

Is it normal to put on your sheet that you wanna play a smaller role with few lines. But you get read for long dialogue parts three different characters across from two different other actors?. Is it just to test chemistry, how loud you can speak, and your mannerisms to see what smaller role might be good for you as a first timer?

Director said for a first timer you're pretty good .

Sorry just very green as a 35 year old male and trying to get a general feel of the process.

High School/College Student Is it appropriate?

Is it weird for me to talk to/ask questions to theatre veterans and directors.

I often want to know advice on things like getting cast as ensemble, working on acting, singing/audition advice from theatre veterans around me. I’m fairly close to my director at school and i have met a bunch of really great directors in community theatre but are these things weird to ask them.

They could be the ones giving me roles and i don’t wanna seem like i’m begging for pity. I just want to understand their thoughts and build tools.

How do i go about this?

Advice got accepted to AMDA once and rejected the second time

hi! i need opinions because i feel like my brain is killing me. in february, i auditioned for AMDA in NYC through an intensive program i attended, and i got accepted. they even increased my scholarship, but it was still really difficult to afford because i’m an international student from Chile, and you can understand what a huge change that would be.
throughout this year, i kept participating in and studying musical theatre, and then i heard that AMDA was coming to Chile, so i decided to apply. i thought, what’s the worst that could happen?! i’ve done this before, whatever, i have nothing to lose. and then i got rejected.
i’m honestly aware of all the stuff online, how people call it SCAMDA and everything, but i’m an anxious person lmao. i keep thinking, okay, did i get worse? because i genuinely felt SO much better vocally and as an actress during my second audition, so now i can’t stop overthinking whether i’m actually cut out for this.
if AMDA accepts anyone, like people say, what does it say about me that i got rejected this time?
anyway, i’d just like to know what you guys think or if i’m crazy 😭

Advice Re-applying for MFA Programs

Hi! I'm about to apply for an MFA in Directing again after trying last year. Got a couple interviews/waitlist but didn't make it in anywhere. I'm curious how people who've applied multiple years in a row have handled the process: did you write a totally new personal statement? Re-use the one you submitted the year prior? Any tips on re-applying super appreciated. 2nd (...or third...or forth times the charm, I hope!). Thanks!

Advice A Christmas Story: Leg Lamp 3D Print - Looking for brainstorming

Hey Everyone,

I have been asked by a local theatre group to create the leg lamp from A Christmas Story.

I figured this might be a great opportunity to use 3D printing as I can create multiples, have a "broken" version, and it is a relatively cheap way to create the leg.

The idea is to print the leg in pieces then assemble them and then glue on a fishnet stocking. For the broken one, I was thinking the same thing, but the stocking would be cut and tattered.

Here is where I'm looking for some ideas.

In the original movie the lamp "glows" at it is hollow and thin plastic. I can 3D print the leg as a shell with enough thickness to hold up. The unfortunate part is that it will likely show the seams where the leg is joined, but I don't see a way around that.

I don't think it is a good idea to have a cord plugged into a wall with live power on stage, so I am thinking some kind of battery in the foot/shoe/base portion and then powered by LEDs?

I also need to figure out a "breakable" solution? My initial thought was using magnets to hold the parts together. When the actors knock it over it would "break" but they could just reset it for the next show.

Any thoughts on how I could improve or implement the design?

Any help would be appreciated.

Advice Not the Right Fit versus Not Skilled Enough

Hello!

So I recently auditioned for a musical and I felt good about how it went. I felt that I performed my song strongly and there was a movement part that I also feel good about. I was honestly thinking a callback would be in the realm of possibility.

However, I ended up not receiving a callback. I know that no callback doesn’t mean no role but I am worried that I’m not getting in to the production anymore when I was feeling so confident from my initial audition. I know roles are based on fit, but I’m beginning to wonder if the reason I’m not being cast isn’t lack of fit but more because I don’t have the skills they’re looking for.

Is there a way to know the difference? In my case does it sound like it’s a fit issue or talent issue? Happy to provide more information if needed.

Need to make a prop bowl of soup and make it solid; or at least not a total liquid consistency.
Brown in color and have a few things visible sticking out the top.
Hoping for fun suggestions.
Thanks and cheers!

Advice is it stupid to want to be on broadway?

so question for all the actors of the world- is it like extremely stupid that i (a teen) have an actual goal of being on broadway someday (even js as ensemble)? i wouldn't say i'm EXTREMELY talented at singing or dancing but im working so hard at it every day and i can definitely act. telling people i want to be an actor when i grow up sounds like im a little kid saying they want to be a princess or something. it is my one goal in life and i'm honestly willing to do anything to make it happen. it's been my dream for as long as i can remember and i'm willing to be told no thousands of times before i even hear one yes. i just know i can do it. but like is this stupid? i want to go to school for musical theatre and my parents don't love that idea because i'll be a "starving artist" (valid concern tho) so like... anyone have any advice on convincing them OR advice on how to actually make it as an actor? what is the "it factor" you need? is it rly js knowing people and having connections? (if so, how do i get those lol) thanks for reading, so sorry this was so long!

Advice Career in theatre

I'm not sure where else to ask this but how could I begin a career in theatre. A few years ago I did theatre design In college, I was interested in the production side of theatre, design sets, costumes, etc, but I also fell in love with the English part and wanted to get into the writing side, I dropped out due to personal reasons.

I'm currently in college doing English and psychology, in this course, we are looking at theatre/literature and if I complete my degree in English I qualify to be a drama teacher

What I'm wondering is could I use this course to get back to my original theatre roots? I'm not really interested in drama teaching but would love to write and get back into production and wondering is it possible for my current course and if so how? Or would I have needed that specific theatre design degree

Discussion can you say “macbeth” in a movie theater?

i work at a movie theater and we livestream the MET opera performances, and the next one coming up is a performance of Macbeth.
is it still considered bad luck to say macbeth in a movie theater? most of our patrons just ask for tickets to “the opera” but some of them say the title of whatever the show is, will they get bad luck from this? will i?
very curious how this superstition is supposed to work!

Help Finding Script/Video WHERE TO WATCH MACHINAL PLEASEEE

Not sure where else to ask this. I want to watch an actual nice quality recording, not the 500 billion YouTube ones where I can barely tell what they're saying. I think I'm specifically looking for the one with Rebecca Hall. I can't find the video ANYWHERE. Is it streamed anywhere??

Seeking Play Recommendations What are some older plays that would be good for a script reading?

I'm part of a script reading series, and im looking for some older, dramatic plays that would be good. I already have an Inspector calls as one of them. I was also planning to do the crucible, but I decided against it because I wasn't sure how to handle the slave character. our town is also in the running, but it is pretty long for a first act so im not sure. any suggestions?

I was also thinking a Dolls house, death of a salesman, or the glass menagerie would be good, but our local high school reads those plays every year for English class, and I think it'd rather introduce people to something new

Advice Live foley ideas

Hi! I'm directing a very short halloween table-read with live foley this month and trying to source some good household items or similar for actors to use. It's an intimate stage/audience so the noises don't have to be loud and it doesn't have to be perfect!

In particular we're looking for wind (howling), creaking doors and floors, footsteps on gravel/wood etc, heart beat, struggling, and any other generally spooky noise making things.

If anyone has any ideas do let me know!
