I "hate" when people "use" quotation marks thinking it's "emphasizing" a word and it turns it to the "opposite" meaning instead

- All of the sudden
- Could of
- Taken back
- I resonate with that 🙄
- A whole nother
- Expresso
- Ying yang
ETA: Jfc people. I’m aware that some of these are actual words and/or modern phrasing - they’re just not grammatically correct and are pet peeves of mine.
It’s not that deep….is it?

Um, what?
“I resonate with that” is grammatically incorrect though people use it a lot.
“That resonates with me” is correct.Ying Yang is not correct.

2
u/DryerCoinJay 1d ago
The point of communicating is to convey an idea. Whether they said it correctly or not it is usually understood correctly.
This is one thing I’m not picky on because I’m a shitty speller myself even for having a degree.
2
u/Adept-Watercress-378 1d ago
Agreed. It’s more of a”this is grammatically correct. You can choose to use it or not”

u/Life-Adhesiveness192 17h ago
I’m a writer/editor, and after a long-ass day of staring at a screen, I misspell, use the wrong form of words, and I use the wrong punctuation. If I’m not on the clock, I don’t care if you’re using the right form of there.
Also, some grammar rules we abide by were made up by dudes in the 1800s, and language evolves, and so should our tolerance for people speaking and writing differently from us.
2
u/humanlvl1 1d ago
There is a reason we call it "pet" peeves. People enjoy having these little bits of pain in their lives,

I hate that “comfortability” has become a thing. People sound so dumb saying that. It’s comfort.
2
u/some_kinda_stupid 1d ago
I think part of the beauty of language is that people speak differently to achieve the same outcome! Its a lil bit of flair we each add to our speech patterns to make us each a bit different. If someone wants to say "comfortability" then who cares?? You know what they mean and they know what they mean! Enjoy the variety of speech around you :)
2
u/SweetClinMusic 1d ago
Are you saying it's not a word?
0
u/piddlepots2345 1d ago
It’s a completely unnecessary word that would have evolved because people didn’t realize that “comfort” already does the exact same job but better.

2
u/Admirable_Loss4886 1d ago
There’s a fair amount of irony in getting upset over that lol
1
u/PJHFortyTwo 1d ago
Incidentally, I think irony is why "I could" is used. You're saying you care a little bit sarcastically to express that you could not actually care less. A bit like saying "any day now" to say "that's not gonna happen soon".
9
u/GlumFaithlessness773 1d ago
Why do they keep saying “wanna”? It’s “want to.” Why do they say “mum” instead of “mother”? Why do they say “give a shit”? To whom?!
Some of you will try to tell me words change depending on time and place. That communication is about shared understanding and not rules. Pish posh!
If it weren’t for grammatical snobbery, how could I show that I was lucky enough to receive a good education at a critical developmental age? How else can I show that I was fortunate enough to attend college? How will those without this privilege know that I’m better and smarter than them?

The thing is language changes. If everybody continues to make these mistakes then that's what becomes the correct way to use the word or words.
I bet she got an English degree and now has nothing better to do then correct peoples spelling and grammar online. LMAO (I did that on purpose, I bet she hates those.)

0:28 The NUMBER of people who…
This has become my personal hell over the past few years. I rarely hear anyone use amount vs number correctly, and any time someone says the word amount, I cannot help but check their usage of it in my mind. When what you are talking about is pluralized and quantifiable, barring rare exceptions, number is the correct word to use. The word people is plural, therefore number is the correct word to use here. This is a similar problem to less vs. fewer.
4
u/demoliahedd 17h ago
Why does this make you so angry? Does it make it more difficult to understand what they are communicating?
1
u/2b_1 4h ago
In all honesty, it doesn’t make me angry. It’s not something I ever bring up when someone makes the mistake (unless I know them really well). Hell, I even make that mistake sometimes.
The reason I brought it up is because I cannot unhear the difference and the fact that I notice every time someone uses it incorrectly is what drives me up the wall. Noticing every single linguistic issue someone makes, no matter how small, is what makes this my personal hell.
So basically, it’s my own perfectionist brain geting on my nerves, rather than something I’m actually annoyed by.
2
1
u/GooniesInTheBoonies 1d ago
You're completely right, but until now I've never noticed or thought about number vs amount in this way. I assume this must be dialectal, or perhaps language has already evolved past this particularity as it has evolved past some of my personal bugbears (such as dice being used instead of die for a singular object).
4
u/More-Initial3870 1d ago
I watched for about three seconds and gave up. I can’t believe people sit through nonsense like this.
7
u/Adelvice_ 1d ago
Thank you. It drives me crazy so many people are fucking stupid.
7
u/bobby_broccolini 1d ago
look up the etymology of any word you use regularly and realize that everyone's constantly shifting. there's not even 1 point or place to lock in on as the correct usage for almost any word.
I agree people are stupid but there is always a bigger boat. these nitpicks are narrow minded and smart people wouldn't judge based off any of these.
3
u/Mysterious_Luck_1365 1d ago
That’s my bigger worry lol. I’m afraid that some of these things will be misused for so long that they will become the norm.
For example if your and you’re become accepted as interchangeable, I will have to go through the extra effort of digging further to decipher language. It already happens in text messages etc. At least for now we agree that it’s wrong. If that agreement goes away, I have to learn to speak English all over in my 40s or 50s. And I’m too tired to do that.
5
u/bobby_broccolini 1d ago
I understand that feeling but my point was that the norm is already "wrong". Every few decades the standard for sentence structure and the meaning of common words changes dramatically or is at least shifting slowly. We just get taught the current standard. There are places where local accents change literally by neighborhood and within those accents they are themselves changing all the time.
Language is ALWAYS moving forward and an expression of something very organic
I understand that maybe it's happening faster nowadays but maybe we are just more aware of it.
Not trying to be a jerk i just maybe can't manage my tone I'm sorry lol
2
u/Mysterious_Luck_1365 1d ago
I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m just upset lol
3
u/bobby_broccolini 1d ago
Yea I get it. Fwiw I'm 33 and pretty sad at how some people talk these days
1
u/piddlepots2345 1d ago
Which words in what you just wrote would not have been understood by someone 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago?!
Zero? People get to learn that language changes and then make the rather facile conclusion that therefore language is always moving “forward” and that all change is good and that in fact change is way more common than it is. Things can regress. Losing the distinction between you’re and your would be a regression. It would be language going backwards and becoming worse. Also far more important than the slow and rare changes is the shared social customs and activity that language is. This is achieved by there being lots and lots of rules which are not broken and change only slightly and very slowly if at all.
Spelling and grammar conventions are not handed down from on high but are a miracle of a vast social agreement and convention that is crucial to you understanding a single word or idea that I just expressed.

u/piddlepots2345 1d ago
Exactly. Just cos Ianguage changes doesn’t mean every change is good and that overwhelmingly stability and shared rules are not far, far more useful 99.999% of the time.
There are very good reasons to be able to distinguish between you’re and your, to/too/two etc and it’s extremely silly to just shrug about all mistakes or potential losses to a language’s capabilities and say “Language changes!”.
1
u/piddlepots2345 1d ago
SO many people get to stage 1 of understanding that language does indeed evolve but then take that to imply that therefore all rules should be broken and all changes are good and no changes should be complained about.
We know. We all know language changes. That doesn’t mean that all changes are good or should be encouraged or that actually there are no benefits to having shared conventions.
You managed to read those previous two paragraphs because I followed the conventions of how all those words were spelled and used. It’s useful to have rules we can all share and use, isn’t it?
1
u/bobby_broccolini 1d ago
I agree with you. There's still something to say about which changes matter and why we think they matter.
Mostly I was criticizing someone for belittling people over these specific examples in the video.
No offense but yes obviously preserving conventions matters. I'm saying people are fixative and hypocritical over which norms are important and don't think about how their own conventions are themselves brand new in the scheme of things
0
u/spacestonkz 1d ago
I'd rather save it for when it's not an unambiguous error.
Like horrified vs mortified have very different meanings and get mixed up to much confusion.
If you say "I could care less" no one thinks you are expressing an intermediate amount of care. We all know what the error is. We all understand the meaning anyway.

The "could care less" thing is something that, when someone says or writes it, makes me immediatly dismiss anything else that person says or writes. Before I had this rule, I've never seen a person use the "could care less" thing that at any point said or wrote anything I found useful to hear or read. It's like a litmus test for me at this point.

Language was made to communicate ideas. If you understand what they're trying to say it did its job even if what they said/typed isn't grammatically correct.
You can type out any version of "their", it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which one you really meant.
Sometimes I fuck up my grammar on purpose just to annoy people like this.

Completely disagree on “I couldn’t care less.” She’s technically right, but the point is by saying it I care so little I don’t even care if it’s perfectly correct. Also, “I could care less” will never be mistaken, ever, for “I care.”
1
u/Crypto_subz 1d ago
I’m not saying she’s doing this also didn’t pay attention to the talk but is it normal to move ur face like that? I mean she’s flexing a jawline that’s not real unless trying like does anyone get what I’m saying? This all an act I feel like I mean cia or whatever was invested in Elvis Presley and what viewers like…is this not the end result? Like sheep speak their mind but they all focused on how they look while doing it? Like does that not takeaway from any message besides just this video lol and at the same time the ones that don’t care it’s hard to care because most don’t want to hear from someone not looking good it seems like the most moronic pattern yet

Here's a thought:
Maybe, just maybe the common mix up of "your" and "you're" isn't always due to people not knowing the difference between the two words. Perhaps, even, its typically not the reason for the mix up?
Far-fetched idea, I know. Idk what I was thinking. Just disregard anything I said.

People using "whenever" for once in a lifetime occurrences
Based on what I see it seems to be concentrated in Texas
• When: Refers to a specific, single point in time or a known moment. ("I will call you when I arrive.")
• Whenever: Refers to repeated/recurring instances, or an unspecified, flexible time.

This isn't the same thing but I've always hated polish vs Polish. Just a capitalization completely changes the meaning. What if it starts a sentence but you intended to use the lower case version.
i.e.
Me: "How did you get your car so shiny?"
You: "Polish"

u/mrjuanofjuan 5h ago
I’ve always understood “I could care less” to be about perspective and that both are acceptable. If someone’s talking to you about something you can say “I could care less (than you do about this topic),” but if you’re talking about your own interest in it you can say “I couldn’t care less (than I currently do).”

u/tonygutz 5h ago
