Notable increase of racism in the sub / Augmentation du racisme dans la communauté

Hello everyone,

The mod team has noticed a marked increase in racism and intolerance, in particular towards immigrants from India. Reddit has noticed as well and has begun removing such posts and/or comments.

It’s pretty clear that one side of the political spectrum has found their wedge issue and they are pushing it as hard as they can, stirring up hatred however they can and blaming immigrants for everything from jaywalking to the housing crisis despite the fact that many of the issues are worldwide. Facts and reality don’t matter, only blaming "brown people" and those they perceive as being responsible for those "terrible" people being here.

Therefore, we would like to remind all of our users that the Reddit sitewide rules apply here and will be enforced.

You ALL AGREED to these rules when you created your account.

Your “opinion” is irrelevant, it’s doesn’t matter if you really, really believe it, you cannot push your unfounded racist positions here.

Again, for the people in the back, being able to use Reddit is conditional to respecting these rules.

In particular:

Rule 1

The important parts are:

users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned

Marginalized or vulnerable groups include, but are not limited to, groups based on:

  • their actual and perceived race
  • colour
  • religion
  • national origin
  • ethnicity
  • IMMIGRATION STATUS
  • etc

While the rule on hate protects such groups, it does not protect those who promote attacks of hate or who try to hide their hate in bad faith claims of discrimination (E.G. “I’m just stating my opinion” or “I’m just stating fact”).

Another important portion is:

free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence

That includes all of our users and the moderator team. Insults, derogatory comments and attacks will not be tolerated. If you post comments or message the moderators with insults and/or attacks, you WILL be banned on the spot.

Therefore, going forward, we are going to clamp down hard on posts or comments attributing, without damn good evidence, the cause of any issue to immigrants or a subset thereof. That includes any reference to area with high immigration (e.g. Brampton) or any other form of dog whistles. It also includes attributing to an ethnic group of people the crimes or faults of an individual (e.g. the guy who proposed using food banks to save money). Message to the bigots: you’re nowhere as subtle as you think you are.

And before any complaints bring it up: No, your right to free speech nor freedom of expression has not been violated.

Dating in Toronto? Why is dating in Toronto so hard…? We made something for it! INTRODUCING /r/datingTO!

We kept seeing the same posts over and over:

  • “Why is dating in Toronto impossible?”
  • “How do you even meet people outside apps?”
  • "Where to meet eligible singles?"
  • "Are we cooked if we're still single?"

So we decided to try building something different: r/DatingTO 💞

It’s basically a space just for people in Toronto who are dating to talk about it!

Note: this is not a R4R sub. Familiarize yourself with the subreddit rules and play nice.

Can we please stop with the South Asian racism

For starters, before anyone attacks me, I was born here and am not Indian but all South Asians kind of are brown and being subjected to this whether you are aware of it or not

So I 27F was crossing the street while on the phone because my headphones were in my bag and this guy (maybe in 20s-30s) was yelling from his car calling me Aunty and making his voice in a high pitch while saying something else but he was yelling Aunty so many times.

I feel so sick like first of all damn but also why are you as a non-brown person saying that in a derogatory way

This might feel minute to many but sometimes I keep getting asked by strangers if I’m indian and then the person mentioning how it’s obvious I’m not from here just by how I look. Man, u have an accent and I don’t. I am also seeing others being harassed or in videos get hurt. But if I look into this online, all media seems to act like this racism is only online. Anyone know how to deal with this. I saw another video about a Sikh delivery driver getting pushed in Toronto too

Pissed off at Rampant Corruption in Toronto Public Transportation Constructions

I am so pissed off at the seemingly rampant widespread corruption and lack of accountability in Toronto area's Public Transport construction, in the last 10 years or so. (maybe even more years).

Tons of secrecy, lack of transparency in all aspects: whether it be sidewalk, roads, or public transits projects (eg railway/ subway/ bus lanes .... etc).

Years of delays in huge construction, with no clear reason being provided every time there are delays.

Corruption such as road construction equipment being idled with no workers on site for many days straight (during both Weekdays and weekends), excessive amount of road lanes or lanes being blocked with respect to the amount of workers that the construction contractor companies employed (eg. too greedy for profits & cost cutting with only like 3~4 workers actually working a few days.. etc), and construction duration signage lies / project estimates overrun.... etc.

It is very frustrating for commutes, especially during peak rush hour. And not only for cars, but also for buses, cyclists and pedestrians as well, because the construction workers often block excessively wider area than the actual areas being worked on.

And construction companies' BOSSES raking in large amounts of taxpayer money, in thanks to their political masters. Yet they don't seem to have any empathy with the public in how much excessive inconvenience they cost! Why don't they segment their work, or hire more workers? Maybe because of overwhelming greed?

The main blame definitely falls to the provincial level MTO.

( And I actually got HIT by cars while riding my bicycle at least 2 times in my life in Toronto. I count myself lucky not to have any extreme serious injuries that requires hospitalization, And I did not report them (out of empathy with the drivers, and due to overwhelming corruption in massive car insurance DENIALS). But does the government care? Of course NNNNOOOOOOTTTTTTT! )

--------------------------------------------

Redundant Web links of "government official road construction tracking websites"

(I Hope everyone on the internet knows these already):

Ontario government related website: https://511on.ca/map& https://511on.ca/list/roadwork ,

Torotonto Related website: https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/road-restrictions-closures/road-restrictions/ &

Not sure if how reliable are twitter (X) or facebook messenger communications from government officials?

CANT FIND A DAM JOB AND KEEP GETTING REJECTED FOR ILLEGAL REASON

Had 5 fucking interviews the past 3 months. I am desperate for work rn and 3 I was rejected for illegal reasons. Interview 1 was at a God dam dairy Queen, was being interviewed and the dude asked if I spoke Hindi, I said no and he said he couldn't hire me. I asked why I needed to know Hindi to work at dairy Queen and he said it was because he and all the works spoke Hindi so he only want to hire people who speak hindi, I speak English and a bit of French you know our official languages. Second was at a pizza shop, the hiring manager she seemed nice and friendly then mid interview she asked if I was Indian (I look like I am) I said no and she was no longer friendly and she rushed to end the interview. Third one was today at a restaurant as a busser, they said they would hire me but I would get paid minimum wage for the first 10 hours a week then they would pay me 10 dollars an hour after that in cash. WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS GOD DAM PROVINCE MOST OF MY FRIENDS CANT FIND WORK OR HAVE TO WORK PART TIME FOR MINIMUM WAGE BECAUSE ITS ALL THEY CAN FIND AND SOME HAVE GOD DAM MASTERS DEGREES IN PHYSICS, ONE HAS A BACHELORS IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING, AND ANOTHER HAS A GOD DAM ARCHITECTURE DEGREE.

Edit: I appreciate all the support, to anyone telling me to report these places I tried and was told that unless I have concrete proof like something in writing then it's pointless cause it's my word against theirs

Off-Leash Dog Kills Baby Squirrel While Owner Stands By

Is it just me or is the situation with off-leash dogs getting completely out of control in Toronto? This week alone, I’ve witnessed three separate incidents involving off-leash dogs. The most horrifying one happened yesterday, just a few hours ago.

I was at the waterfront with my wife when we noticed a tiny baby squirrel desperately trying to climb a tree. It managed to climb a short distance up the tree but the trunk was too smooth and it kept slipping. We figured it must have been trying to reach its nest.

We also noticed a nursing mother squirrel in a nearby tree, but she was too far away to see the baby. We started calling to her hoping she would come closer and notice the little squirrel. Remarkably, it worked. After a few attempts, she came down to the ground and started comforting the baby.

We decided to move farther away so we wouldn’t interfere with the mother’s rescue.

When we were about 30 feet away two off-leash dogs suddenly appeared and chased the mother up a tree. We ran back and started yelling at the owner to restrain his dogs. Other than saying, “It’s fine,” he did absolutely nothing.

The baby squirrel, which had initially gone unnoticed by the dogs, was trying to follow its mother up the tree when one of the dogs snatched it off the trunk. We yelled again but the owner just stood there without reacting. Not a word, not a movement. He simply stood two feet away, watching his dog kill the baby squirrel.

I tried to separate the dog from the baby, but it was too late. The baby died a few minutes later in my hands, covered in blood.

After the incident, the owner showed absolutely no remorse. He even went so far as to blame us for what happened, claiming that our attempts to help the squirrel amounted to “interfering with nature.”

Two other people got involved and started confronting him as well. Only then did he finally put his dogs on leashes. Even then, he continued arguing with everyone insisting that he had done nothing wrong.

I took photos of the owner and his dogs, and apparently, he is regularly seen in the area. I would like to report this incident. Does anyone know the best way to do so, or which authorities I should contact?

Just to be clear, I don’t blame the dogs. I hold the owner responsible for not keeping them on leashes and for doing nothing to intervene during the attack. This could easily have been prevented if the owner had restrained his dogs when we asked him to.

As I was leaving the scene, the mother squirrel, who had witnessed everything from the tree, started making a haunting sound, almost like crying. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.

Was the sound bad at Jimmy Carr at Scotiabank Arena last night, or just my section?

I just came back from Jimmy Carr’s show at Scotiabank Arena and the sound was really bad from where I was. There was so much echo it was hard to make out what he was saying at times, which made it hard to enjoy the show. Was it the whole room or just my section? Curious if anyone else there had the same experience.

Here’s a short clip from my seat: https://www.reddit.com/r/JimmyCarr/comments/1x827rc/was_it_just_me_or_was_the_sound_really_bad_at/

I can’t win. Food!

I don’t order food, or go out for food too often but I’m 3/3 disappointment. When I choose a food, it’s because I have a specific craving, so I really want what I came out for.

1: Uber Eats: Chinese food, chicken and shrimp stir fry, find no shrimp in the order. Comped, fuck but I wanted shrimp.

2: Have a weekday off work, beautiful sunny day. Choose a local bar for lunch because they have a mushroom Swiss burger.

Get a beer by myself on the patio, relaxed, didn’t have any food today so I ask for the mushroom Swiss. Taking a long time, two beers in and a shot deep, I’m wondering where the burger is. Asked the server….“oh sorry! Getting it right now!” Serves me two free shots. Also have another beer. Burger comes…..now I’m drunk and it’s a plain cheddar burger.

Now I’m waking into the bar drunk and hungry as hell still, feeling like an asshole, drunk explaining, for the love of god please put some mushrooms on this (in a polite way still, I don’t get angry, I accept my fate and try to resolve politely).. no Swiss. An whatever. I could have cooked a better frozen burger at home…

3: local bar for nachos, did not have sour cream, did not have salsa. They took it off the bill for me for me. I don’t care about free. I want some god damn nachos with some dips. Ate what I could and left half the dry chip nachos.

3 for 3 in a row bad experience.

For the love of god I have to go to a fast food place to get something right!

For those who are undecided about who to vote for in the Mayoral election...

I posted this in the Toronto sub and it was automatically removed and locked. WTF?!?!?! Political threads are allowed there so I don't know what the problem is. I am sure my post will be removed from this sub, too.

I keep seeing posts about people being unsure of who to vote for and wanting more information about the leading candidates. There are some good comments about the matter. Here is a breakdown for the undecideds to reference. There's no need for multiple posts asking the same thing.

Olivia Chow has done good things. She hasn't improved my life but she has made a positive difference in the city.

Olivia cares about cyclists having safe places to ride on the roads. She herself is a cyclist. She does not have a car. Having bike lanes has resulted in less cyclist deaths.

Olivia Chow wants to fight against bad landlords who do not do repairs.

Olivia Chow sped up construction on the Gardiner simply be changing the schedule. Construction was completed 18 months (1 year and a half) sooner than originally planned.

During the aftermath of a winter storm cleanup was not satisfactory. Olivia Chow made sure cleanup would be better next time. After a storm the following year cleanup was much better. It wasn't perfect but it was a great improvement.

There are a lot of things about Toronto to be upset about. A lot of these bad things are the fault of the Provincial government, not Olivia Chow.

People in the Beaches (where Brad Bradford is the City Councillor) talk about how much they dislike Brad. Why did he get re-elected? They say he is rarely in his office and that he does not respond to constituent concerns.

In July 2024, Integrity Commissioner Jonathan Batty found that Bradford improperly used constituents' personal information obtained from his city hall office for campaign purposes during the 2023 by-election for mayor, violating city council's code of conduct.

Brad Bradford voted against opening more homeless shelters as well as water being given to homeless people.

Brad Bradford flip-flops on big issues. In 2020 he wanted police funding to be cut. Now he wants more officers out there. In 2021 he voted to rename places with the name "Dundas". In 2024 he said renaming would be too expensive and that the najority if Torontonians did not want the name to change. No shit. DURING THE CURRENT MAYORAL CAMPAIGN HE SAID HE WANTS TO RENAME THE SQUARE TO TORONTO SQUARE.

Brad Bradford has not talked about what he has done to make his ward better. If someone is running for office they should be letting people know what they achieved. Why would someone think he can get things done? You would think a candidate would want to proudly discuss their track record.

Olivia Chow's vision for the city is one of vibrancy, being a welcoming place, fairness and fun.

Brad Bradford's vision is one of safety, structure and efficiency. There is nothing wrong with that but he has not explained how he will make this happen. He says a lot of things I agree with but he is not trustworthy.

Olivia Chow does not want to cut services.

If Brad Bradford were to keep certain promises, services would need to be cut.

If you do decide to vote, make your decision based on who you think actually think has a plan to improve things in Toronto.

Good day.

Municipal coalitions like Progress Toronto shouldn't exist

There's a reason why the party system doesn't exist at a municipal level, and attempts at establishing one are counterproductive to how a city is supposed to function.

Progress Toronto has impeded meaningful progress in key areas, since councillors will abdicate critical thinking on a case-by-case basis in order to support their unofficial partisan system.

As a city worker, you are free to hold whatever personal values you want, and you will naturally express that through what you stand for. However, bringing in the party system, which has caused significant harm at the provincial and federal levels, most notably through Doug Ford and his PC government, is frankly negligent.

Progress Toronto is responsible for rampant overspending, sometimes on initiatives that are more performative than actually addressing the everyday needs of citizens. There are cases that could be considered egregious instances of misspending taxpayer dollars.

The worst part is that these coalitions tend to insulate bad actors who are protected because of their voting power, rather than the objective merit of what they stand for.

Think about the outrage that would exist if a Conservative Toronto coalition existed. People would be protesting at Nathan Phillips Square on a weekly basis, and rightfully so.

Partisanship is the root of political harm, and this needs to be banned at the municipal level. Use your brain and listen to your constituents rather than trying to play dress up MPP or MP.

I’m about ready to strap a 2x4 across my chest to walk through the streets of this selfish ass city to teach a lesson on awareness.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS WRONG WITH SO MANY PEOPLE COMPLETELY, WILLFULLY IGNORANT, OR JUST THAT FUCKING UNAWARE??

Walk on the right of the fucking sidewalk. I don’t give a fuck about your need to go against the status quo, your actions tell everyone around you just how shite of a person you are.

Oh you neeeeeed to watch your TikTok feed while walking to work/school?? Or maybe it’s just so important for your three friends to be attached at the hip because you don’t have a single ounce of confidence to walk behind them for half a second. Orrrrr maybe it’s your shitty dog control, are you walking the dog or are they walking you? Don’t get me started on texters with their noses buried in their phone not even looking up to cross a busy city road. Just absolutely insane.

I don’t see this behaviour this bad in any other city. I swear to god. What has happened to this place?

People will always say it’s everywhere but I really don’t believe that. Barcelona, NY, London, Paris, Mexico City, they all have better pedestrian etiquette than this shithole. Everyone here acts like they are the only people in the city. They expect you to move out of the way despite you being on the far edge of a cross walk or sidewalk. Oh you want me to phase out of solid matter? Fuck you.

Apparently driving a TTC bus is easier than posting in r/TTC

So I work for the TTC, literally drive their buses for a living, but apparently I’m not qualified to post in r/TTC because I don’t have 300 Reddit karma.
I’ve had Reddit for six years, mostly just reading, and managed to accumulate a whopping 82 karma.
Apparently, I’m qualified to transport hundreds of passengers around Toronto every day, but sharing my thoughts in a subreddit about the company I work for? Absolutely not. 😂
I guess Reddit karma is the one qualification my TTC training didn’t cover.

Toronto is an American city

Probably the most American city outside of the United States. If you ignored the Tim Horton's and Harvey's and replaced the bank tower names TD and BMO with Citi and Chase, it would look exactly like Chicago, NYC or Philadelphia. Doesn't look anything like London or Paris or Barcelona. I know those cities are hundreds of years older so they were built in a different time.

The only city outside the U.S. with an NBA and MLB team. The city lives vicariously through the Bills.

Poor people and homeless are mostly black and white people like the U.S. cities. In every other city in Canada the poors are mostly First Nations.

City was built on grid structure like U.S. cities. The city is car centric like the U.S. The DVP/Gardiner runs through the city and was meant to isolate poor communities on the east side - like the U.S. Same thing with the 401 and places like Rexdale. The plan to rip up bike lanes AND the support of most of the city's people (outside of Reddit and the downtown core) could be ripped out of a Houston town hall meeting. Not out of Amsterdam.

The suburbs are similar to U.S. cities. The type of housing and density is similar to U.S. cities. Malls, strip malls, plazas, parking lots etc...similar to U.S. cities.

.....then Canadians get all up in a huff and puff at 51st state and American Exceptionalism rhetoric. Well, if Toronto and the GTA (where a good chunk of Canada's total population lives) follows the same model of life as any U.S. city, how can you blame Americans who assume that Canadians want to be like Americans anyway? We did this to ourselves.

Rob Ford was right. Uber should never have been allowed to operate in this city

You can have your opinions about the former mayor. But 12 years after his mayoralty, one thing he said is absolutely correct to me that we should’ve shut the door on Uber when it knocked. Called it at 1 a.m. today, someone picks up and doesn’t move. Cancelled and called another one. Doesn’t move. The third one moved but he went way off route before picking me up, likely because he was already doing a Lyft or DoorDash. Beck drivers were not perfect, but they absolutely did not do this. Their rates were set by the city instead some surge pricing bullcrap. Anyone who lived in Toronto could easily spot scams or unnecessary detours. We did not have to enshittify our taxi system; in fact, we welcomed it with open arms. Would you tolerate a private “alternative” or “competitor” to the TTC or GO Transit? Hell, we don’t even let the University of Toronto run a shuttle between their St. George and Scarborough campuses because it interferes with the TTC. Mayor Ford was absolutely correct when he famously said “same game, same rules”.

Feeling more and more resentful about the 9-5

With every day that passes I feel more and more resentful that this the majority of my youth and life will be spent at a desk until my body is too old and tired to do anything other than wait to die.

I just feel in the core of my being that this isn’t how we are suppose to live.

Im in my 30’s and constantly thinking about the weekend or ways I can sneak in an opportunity to rest and try to beat this endless fatigue.

They are cutting RNs and replacing them with RPNs in hospitals.. now happening in another major one downtown.

Now what I’m saying might be controversial, but I am almost okay with cutting RNs and with unlicensed professionals like PSWs who can do some of the RN’s work that require less complex skills/critical thinking.

But if you are gonna give RPNs pretty much the same work as RNs then why aren’t you paying them more?

But RPNs go through different education and enroll with a lower standard of academics so they easily replace them for cheaper.

Anyway it’s gonna get worse in the hospitals you visit…

PSA: don't get into fights with strangers on the TTC

TLDR: getting into fights with strangers puts all of us at risk of harm, not just you, don't do it!!

I was on the TTC tonight and the train was paaaacked! There was a man with his dog and this guy didn't look very friendly, you know? Well, he's not the most gentle dog handler but also, i didn't think it was the worst. He was taking pics of the two of them sitting together on the people chairs, it was cuuute! Everyone's fine.

Then along comes a brave prince charming to save the day that didn't need saving and he says to the man, "excuse me, could you please stop abusing your dog?"

I was standing right between the two and promptly ran away, obviously. I heard the unfriendly man raise his voice, "see, that's why people get hurt, cause they don't mind their fucking business"

and I thought, man, this is so fucked up. Why would Prince Charming do this? Doesn't he know that escalating on a closed, moving train packed with people is dangerous for all of us? What a sicko. Don't be that guy

Pedestrian lights at Cherry St and Lakeshore E

Mini rant: The pedestrian lights at Cherry St and Lakeshore E are not synced with the bike lights, so if you don't press the button the pedestrian lights won't switch to walk.

This happened twice this evening wehre no one had pressed the lights and pedestrian lights didn't switch and a couple of people were just waiting there for the lights to switch. I've observed this too many times now.

We cater too much to bad drivers

Arguably we cater to drivers too much in general, but it’s annoying to see drivers slow down at each onramp to let cars crawling onto the freeway merge when they’re supposed to merge at freeway speed! Same thing with people making dangerous ass left turns out of a plaza, blocking the whole road and expecting the world to give them the right of way when they don’t have it.

Part of the issue is that driver’s ed is a joke and there’s no enforcement of bad drivers, so there’s zero consequences for them nor any motivation to improve.

Loud Motorcycles Are Ruining Toronto’s Peace and Quiet

The noise from motorcycles with excessively loud exhausts in Toronto is getting unbearable. Some riders deliberately rev their engines, creating deafening noise that echoes between high-rise buildings.

It's extremely annoying, stressful for residents, and especially distressing for pets. especially for pets ...

This is a complete violation of our right to peace and quiet in our own homes. Why is this still tolerated in a city like Toronto?

Who steals from a charity?!!?

I'm sure we've all heard the news now about the catalytic converters being stolen from not one but seven Second Harvest trucks. Who does that, why couldn't you go down the street to the Weston Bakery and cripple those trucks? Trust me Galen can afford it. Why target a charity that provides rescued fresh food to hundreds of organizations helping people in need?

Tired of getting harassed and threatened by aggressive homeless people on my walk home after night shifts in Toronto

I work 12-hour shifts and often get off late. Walking home at night in Toronto has become stressful as hell. There are people on the streets who look completely out of it, walking around like zombies, nodding off, muttering, blocking sidewalks, and getting in people’s faces asking for money. Some of them get aggressive and start threatening you if you don’t give them anything or if you just try to walk past.

The worst part is that if I ever push back or defend myself even a little, I’m the one who risks losing my job and having my career ruined. They can act however they want with almost zero consequences, while the rest of us are expected to just take it and keep quiet. Almost feels like we should utilize our transit system to funnel them to a place where they have unlimited resources(ykwim) and just leave them there to figure it out....

I’m not heartless. I used to feel bad. But after dealing with this constantly while working long hours and still paying taxes that supposedly go toward helping the situation, it’s hard not to feel frustrated. A lot of these people seem completely checked out and aren’t contributing anything, yet the streets keep getting worse.

I just want to be able to walk home after a long shift without feeling like I’m going to get confronted or threatened. Something about the current approach clearly isn’t working.

Anyone else dealing with the same thing?
