Powers (Funny Trope) Character is completely immune to another character's powers for a very specific reason

Teodora vs Ghost of Medusa (Legend Quest)

Medusa (who as a ghost can only petrify other ghosts) failed to petrify Teodora because it would be later revealed that Teodora isn't actually a ghost but instead an astral projection

Usopp vs Perona (One Piece)

Usopp can't be made depressed by Perona's hollows because he's already depressed giving him the upper hand that no one else has

Similarly Mysterio's illusions don't work on Daredevil

Does mysterio not use auditory hallucinations? I feel that may mess with daredevil but idk

u/AndrewH73333 Aug 12 '26

That makes sense. He’d know whether a sound was coming from something real or a speaker. And then he could tell where all the speakers were.

40

u/Environmental-Run248 Aug 12 '26

Not to mention the audio manipulation would more help than hinder daredevil unless it was extremely loud because it would contribute to his radar sense.

17

u/Shabolt_ Aug 13 '26

Yeah, Daredevil’s audio processing kind of improves with input until it gets overwhelmed

A lot of noise is good, a loud noise can be good, but a lot of loud noise and sensory inputs can overwhelm his other senses. Such as when a sprinkler system’s alarms and fetid water fried his hearing, smell and a lot of his sense of touch all at once

Mysterio would need to do sooooo much prep work for his illusions to catch DD off guard, and at that point it would probably just work better on anyone but Matt

Like if he just uses speaker, matt would know, so he’d need to build a facsimile of whatever he is pretending exists, which if it’s a human would mean a working hearbeat and breathing

Which at that point just hire a Skrull

u/Ok_Echo_8200 Aug 12 '26

I'm pretty sure since he can kind of map out a room like a bat using echolocation type shit and hear heartbeat, tell if someone is lying, etc... a speaker from a machine is very unlikely to fool him.

Was there something different about mysterios illusions then or did the writers just kind off forget?

68

u/72pintohatchback Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

Kevin Smith wrote that arc (Guardian Devil), his illusions weren't really used directly against Matt, but on the people around him to create a situation that caused him to believe he was dealing with a real-deal Catholic antichrist/second coming moment. And he was drugged, classic Mysterio.

In Kung Fu Panda, Po is immune to Tai Lung's accupressure attacks because he's literally too fat for the attack to actually reach his nerves.

438

u/anotherdepressedpeep Aug 12 '26

Props to Mantis for owning up to it and not letting Tigress beat Po for nothing even if they didn't get along yet.

305

u/rockinherlife234 Aug 12 '26

It's what I liked about the furious 5, Po is showing no signs of potential but none of them are really antagonistic towards him apart from Tigress, they kind of just awkwardly tiptoe around it, even Tigress gives him a fair shot and when she rejects him, she's harsh but not cruel about it.

108

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 Aug 12 '26

I thought it was funny that Angelina Jolie kinda played the same character in KP as she did in Wanted.

Much nicer in KP tho

76

u/Environmental-Run248 Aug 12 '26

Monkey and Crane were kind of cliquey about Po being the dragon warrior.

Mantis and snake were really the only ones that didn’t judge him on how he looked because they didn’t have typical bodies for kung fu either. Mantis even brings it up that he’s not really in a position to judge others based on their size because of his.

35

u/Zorro5040 Aug 13 '26

When you go into their back stories it tracks with Mantis and Snake being failures who became something thanks to Kung Fu and someone believing in them.

65

u/KenseiHimura Aug 12 '26

I feel like it’s because, at least according to most sources I recall, Tigress was the only one raised in the temple. The rest were vagrants and normal people, so they’re still amazed to have been found to have the potential and risen to be masters.

Po just serves as an award reminder to them of how they started out.

34

u/Standard-Table-2389 Aug 12 '26

Yeah she was raised in the temple similar to how Tai lung was except she was actively sought out and adopted from a orphanage where she was treated like garbage because she was a tiger and she just like Tai lung also trained her whole life under the thought that she may become the dragon warrior of course she was never actively told that she would be she just really hoped that she would achieve it eventually. So she was just really disappointed when Po became the dragon warrior instead of her. And pretty upset about it.

It wasn't that he was too fat persay. It was that pandas being as fat as they are have caused the points to be out of position compared to most animals/people. Mantis is using a specific guide earlier in the movie and even with that he still has difficulty with the points.

185

u/HaloGuy381 Aug 12 '26

And, given the panda village genocide as of the second film, there’s also a good reason neither Mantis nor Tai Lung have any familiarity with panda anatomy. Po is likely the first they’ve encountered and needed to use such technique.

In the Team Fortress comics, Demoman is immune to the blood-sucking robots because he has so much alcohol in his system his blood is toxic to them. His body is somehow capable of fermenting his own bones to make more alcohol to make him more drunk and therefore more protected.

627

u/MrPresident2020 Aug 12 '26

Auto-brewery syndrome is a real thing!

498

u/lordcalumthe2nd Aug 12 '26

True but with demoman it's really funny, his body will literally perceive solid food and clean water as poison and his body learned how to make alcohol from itself as a defense mechanism from 'the posion'

116

u/MrBones-Necromancer Aug 12 '26

Also, it's now thought to be the cause of spontaneous combustion! The alcohol produced makes your breath flammable, and can cause full body immolation if it ignites.

Grim - Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy: Big Boogie Adventure

In the film, the boogie man was searching for Horror’s Hand, a device that shows people their greatest fear. When the hand went for Grim, he revealed he wasn’t affected by it because he already lives his greatest nightmare: living with Billy and Mandy.

139

u/ZorkNemesis Aug 12 '26

Venom is completely undetectable to Pete's spider-sense because of how much time Peter spent with the symbiote

It kinda got retconned into all symbiotes are immune to it (which is stupid) but I like the first reason more

587

u/VecnaWrites Aug 12 '26

I can understand Venom, Carnage (his son), and Toxin (his grandson) each being immune, since that ability could be passed down, but all of them??

359

u/Yanmega9 Aug 12 '26

Im gonna be honest Carnage is the stupidest thing to me. Sure, maybe at first but Peter's brain should most definetly register Cletus as a threat.

It makes more sense with Venom, where peter knew the symbiote, and nowadays he isn't really a threat anymore anyways. But Carnage? Nah

135

u/VecnaWrites Aug 12 '26

It does make sense in a way. Eddie Brock sure didn't like Peter or Spiderman either. But the Symbiote hid him. Its the same way in this case. But I respect your opinion too

→ More replies (3)

52

u/BookkeeperPercival Aug 12 '26

35

u/star75legacy Aug 12 '26

The real reason Peter's spider-sense doesn't warn him about Venom is because it would be constantly alerting him that the symbiote is nearby, just because it wanted to stalk him like the toxic ex-girlfriend it is.

Okay, no xd

Real life example

Birds are immune to spicy foods because they don’t have capsaicin receptors

240

u/Character_Release379 Aug 12 '26

are their stomachs still affected?

573

u/KaelCampaigne Aug 12 '26

Naw, the theory is that capsaicin evolved because it stopped bugs and rodents from eating the seeds and instead would be eaten by bird, whole, who would then fly far away before pooping the whole seeds, which helped the plants spread farther and thus more evolutionarily successful

311

u/Fremen-to-the-end-05 Aug 12 '26

Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, their random expression of fruitful genes never accounted for a species that enjoyed the pain capsaicin brought.

144

u/LunarPsychOut Aug 12 '26

God himself couldn't take spicy Thai food away from me, I don't think mother nature is going to do it either

It's the evolutionary equivalent of "Task failed successfully" - a large mammal that can't naturally spread your seeds actually enjoys your unpleasant defense mechanism and starts eating you more, but they end up enjoying it so much that they actively cultivate your reproduction on a large scale and effectively guarantee you will never go extinct.

31

u/Opening-Set-7752 Aug 12 '26

If someone ever asks me to give an example of "Task failed successfully", I am sending them this

28

u/Thybro Aug 12 '26

Fortunately for sure, since it has secured the continued existence of their species as we now breed them for consumption.

What if we have modified them by interbreeding so badly that it would make 15th century European royalty flinch. They still around.

→ More replies (4)

76

u/Electronic-Box-4753 Aug 12 '26

Nope, because they're the intended spreader. Mammals like to chew on things, which can destroy the seeds, so peppers developed capsaicin to deter mammals from eating them while allowing birds to eat them and effectively spread them in order for them to reproduce. This didn't work that well considering humans like the pain.

147

u/Gaius-Pious Aug 12 '26

74

u/Pay-Next Aug 12 '26

And then we started breeding them to make the capsaicin worse...SO MUCH WORSE!!! AND THEN WE STILL EAT THEM!!!

32

u/Gaius-Pious Aug 12 '26

My cousin would breed them and make his own hot sauce. He called one blend "Don't Touch Your Face"

I always love the capsaicin story because it's basically cascading Uno reverse cards.

Plant creates capsaicin so that mammals won't eat it, because only birds spread its seeds.

Humans evolve and decide we like capsaicin, so we eat it like crazy. Uno reverse!

Humans like it so much we deliberately spread capsaicin-bearing plants all over the globe, far more effectively than birds ever have. The molecule that was supposed to repel us became so desirable that it flipped from being an evolutionary failure to a wild success via the exact opposite mechanism as intended. Uno reverse again!

40

u/Windherz Aug 12 '26

Capsaicin: task failed successfully

u/the-namedone Aug 12 '26

The fact that Tony's 'performance issues' quip legitimately gets Loki angry will never not be funny.

Context: She was on Homeworld's side during the war against the Crystal Gems of Earth, but during a battle, she got poofed (her hardlight body got disrupted) and before she could regenerate, she was found by other Homeworld soldiers and mistaken for a Crystal Gem, so they slapped her into a mirror and interrogated her through it for who knows how long trying to get info on the Crystal Gems. Information she didn't even have. Then when the planet was blasted and all of the other gems were corrupted, she was trapped in the mirror and stored away, unable to reform her body for thousands of years.

Normally, gems that are imprisoned are placed in a "bubble" of energy that essentially places them in suspended animation. They don't experience the passage of time while bubbled. Lapis wasn't bubbled, she was physically stuck to an object that was preventing her from forming her body again. Basically "I have no mouth and must scream." She was trapped in this state for several thousand years until being found and freed by Steven.

Blue Diamond has the power to project her own emotions onto others, and she unleashes a wave consisting of the "thousands of years of grief" she felt mourning the loss of Pink Diamond, but thousands of years of grief doesn't quite compare to thousands of years of being trapped in confined, solitary, formless torment.

72

u/AmArschdieRaeuber Aug 12 '26

Good explanation, well done

51

u/greedyrabitt Aug 12 '26

this also doesn't cover however long she was in the ocean after she was freed from the mirror (which happens pretty damn soon AFTER she was freed iirc)

some other gem named Jasper (I think) tried to fuse with her in an attempt to attack the surviving Crystal Gems. instead of allowing Jasper to hurt them, she accepted the fusion and became Malachite, who was then dragged into the ocean and imprisoned by Lapis's water powers

Lapis willingly kept Jasper locked in that fusion and trapped in the ocean for a very long time

it's been a while since I've seen it, but iirc the fusion broke at some point and Jasper hunted Lapis down again later to beg/threaten her to fuse again just because Jasper loved how strong fusion made her feel. it didn't work out

Mahito (that's the patchwork motherfucker on the right) has the power to mess with peoples' souls and warp them into all manner of horrific forms that are forced to do his bidding whilst still being conscious and aware of what's happened to them. That's why he's one of the evilest bastards in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Yuji Itadori (pink boy on the left) is immune to this because he's possessed by, if anything, an even eviler bastard named Ryomen Sukuna. That possession means that Mahito can't touch Yuji's soul without touching Sukuna, who gets VERY slash-happy when that happens, even by accident. As a result, Yuji is one of the exceptional few who can fistfight the little bastard while being relatively safe from his technique.

(And, as a side note, Mahito can also use his technique to fix himself, meaning very few others can actually hurt him in a meaningful capacity. Yuji, being Sukuna's soul cage, naturally can.)

In a bit of an unrelated note, I remember seeing a discussion around whether Yoru from chainsawman was more evil than Sukuna and there was a really good answer that applies here.

It comes down to their natures, sure, Mahito is horrible, Sukuna just doces people up, mostly as collateral and is implied to eat them as well but Mahito literally violates your very soul and physical form for fun, it's killing + Torture.

Despite being called a curse, Sukuna is still human at the end of the day, he could have stopped his wanton slaughter at anytime or done even a little more introspection to realise the real reason he resented the world but he never did until after his actual death.

Mahito has no choice but to be a curse, he's given sentience and sapience but just like every other curse, he will only ever be just a mirror of humanity's wickedness.

So Sukuna is seen as more evil because he has a choice not to be.

Gotta show the page of Mahito figuring this out.

Yuji looks like an absolute menace.

Ash, Pikachu, Jesse, and James (Pokémon Black and White): When a group of aliens mind control an entire city- people and Pokémon alike -looking for their lost item, only the listed 3 are immune. This is because, by the Aliens own admission, they are too stupid for it too work.

u/Euphoric_Metal199 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

Pikachu did get affected, if only for a few minutes.

Thus, Pikachu is smarter than Ash.

Meowth is also too stupid for the passive hypnosis. They had to actively control him.

87

u/Lunalatic Aug 12 '26

Given that this happened in Unova specifically and they made Ash stupider for that arc, it's not that surprising that Pikachu's smarter than him.

Same thing with Banshee and Black Tom Cassidy, who are cousins.

Minor Batman villain the Ventriloquist has a split personality that manifests as his dummy puppet, Scarface the Gangster. This makes him immune to the emotion controlling abilities of the Psycho-Pirate, because as Scarface says: “No one controls the Ventriloquist but me.”

One of the last antagonists of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind is Cioccolata, whose Stand, Green Day, causes any living thing who loses elevation in any way to be affected by a supernatural fungus that rots them to dust in seconds.

Bruno Bucciarati, however, is immune to the fungus by virtue of already being dead, meaning the fungus doesn't recognize him as a valid target even if he falls.

Shaggy and Scooby however are immune, as they had no sense of rhythm in the first place, and so, while the Hex girls play against the ska band, and start to fail, Shaggy and Scooby step in to save the day.

The One Ring could not best one Samwise Gamgee, Gardener of the Shire.

"Wild fantasies arose in his mind; and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age, striding with a flaming sword across the darkened land, the armies flocking to his call as he marched to the overthrow of Barad-dûr. And then the clouds rolled away, and the white sun shone, and at his command the vale of Gorgoroth became a garden of flowers and trees and brought forth fruit. He had only to put on the Ring and claim it as his own, and all this could be."

"...he knew in the core of his heart that he was not large enough to bear such a burden, even if such villains were not mere cheat to betray him. The one small garden of a free gardner was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command."

198

u/Phonyyx Aug 12 '26

Isn’t the implication that the ring just needed more time to break samwise down before he could convince Sam to put it on?

263

u/_whatever_wherever Aug 12 '26

That's exactly it

NOBODY is immune to The One Ring, but some people, those who don't have grand desires and ambitions, it has a real difficult time getting its hooks into

Remember, Sam WAS tempted, even if only for a second

119

u/The-Honorary-Conny Aug 12 '26

Well there are characters who are immune to The One Ring, one being Tom bombadil. Unfortunately Tom bombadil is such an enamatic figure we aren't 100% sure why he's immune but he is.

80

u/_whatever_wherever Aug 12 '26

It's just Bombadil, even powerful Maia aren't immune, Bombadil just.... breaks the rules, he just is

23

u/Drmarcher42 Aug 12 '26

While we’re never shown, I think it’s safe to assume the  Ring would have no sway over the Valar. As their power is so much greater than Sauron. Plus this goes without saying since they are the one above, but the Ring would be a just a piece of his own design to  Erū  Ilúvatar and would be completely useless as a tool against him.

Which is why Gandalf was fine with the ring being amongst hobbits, and bringing the hobbits along in the first place. As a people, they are naturally resistant to the ring because they don't want anything but a simple life.

Sam is a quintessential hobbit whereas; Merry is from the clan that lives on the edge of Hobbit society, Pippen is Took (warrior adventure blood) and Frodo who is a cousin of Pippen.

He isn't invincible to it, no one is. But, as the other person has mentioned, its much more difficult to tempt those who dont have grand desires and who know their limits. Hobbits just happen to be very resistant people because of their mindset and how they live their lives. Even after many years have passed using the ring, Bilbo DID manage to give it up by his own will, even if it was hard for him.

He’s also immune to Taskmaster copying him—because even Wade doesn’t know what move he’s going to do next in a fight. Unlike regular humans who eventually settle into a pattern even subconsciously, Wade doesn’t cause of the personalities. He’s truly random.

Similarly Taskmaster cannot copy Spider-Man anymore due to his fighting style relying on the Spider Sense.

He outright refuses to copy Moon Knight because of his self destructive tendencies. “Never met a punch you didn’t want to take, huh?!”

Not sure if this counts but in Frieren, Ubel is apparently the worst possible matchup for the First class mage Sense.

In this particular case, sense is a mage of the highest caliber that enchanted her hair so she could control it. It's strong, easily expandable and thanks to magic is resistant to most attacks.

Ubel on the other hand is a novice first class mage whose signature spell is one that can cleave and cut things. The thing that makes her so especial is that she somehow subconsciously believes stuff, regardless of whether her logic mind tells her otherwise. This already makes her a mage with a lot of potential, but it makes her dangerous by allowing her to cut basically everything just as long as she once believed or saw it being cut. In her first example she accidentally killed a mage with a highly enchanted cloak, one that nearly everyone failed to damage or touch, but Ubel grew up with her seamstress sister seeing her cut fabric, so deep down for her fabric is fabric no matter the enchantment, everyone else knew that but seeing the enchantments made them unable to imagine being able to cut it. Same goes for Hair, as she knows it's something that can be cut and sense knows this, calling her her worst matchup. Which we later see after she kills a perfect copy of her.

Later we even see more of her unique power after she cuts an entire stone tower to pieces, and one of her opponents theorized that she might've seen rocks being cut in quarry and that belief is stilled in her so deeply she can cut large stone while no other mage can.

In this world magic is limited only by your imagination, which at first glance seems like it would be limitless only for you to realize that often our imagination is limited by what we know and believe. Enter someone crazy who believes regardless of logic and you have a very dangerous individual.

31

u/grandfleetmember56 Aug 12 '26

I haven't read the manga, but I can't wait for her to cut spells/magic itself.

Fate/Stay verse has a character that can do this, as in they can see a magic line in everything that if they just get to the line and cut it with a simple knife the thing is destroyed.

This includes the universe itself.

Elster (SIGNALIS) is immune to the Corruption, a metaphysical disease that turns those infected by it into insane flesh zombies that cannot die permanently unless via fire. There are two possible reasons for this.

1) Her wife is the unwilling progenitor of the Corruption, and even in the depths of delirium and radiation sickness is unable to bring herself to harm her love

2) She’s already corrupted. It’s just that her personal brand of insanity requires her to keep her faculties intact, along with her flesh.

Chloe is immune to Lucifer’s mojo as he calls it. He can make people tell him their greatest desire. Also, he basically is desire so it makes people want to have sex with him.

https://giphy.com/gifs/l3V0F84ScFtaLWII8

This is because God sent Amenadial down to perform a miracle on Chloe’s mother who hadn’t been able to have children so she’d have her. She was therefore the only human to see Lucifer for himself and not be affected by him.

Luffy and Enel.

249

u/OrderOf Aug 12 '26

For further explanation, this is Enel, whose power is lightning. Luffy meanwhile possesses the dual properties of both rubber and gum, making him fully immune to Enel’s lightning powers.

159

u/dreambraker Aug 12 '26

To further elaborate, Enel has been portrayed as a god till this point and has seemed absolutely unbeatable. This is his first priceless reaction to someone not being affected by his abilities.

60

u/BlackDwarfStar Aug 12 '26

From the first moment I learned what Enel’s powers were, my first thought was “So we just need Luffy to fight him.”

41

u/kamiho1991 Aug 12 '26

To even further elaborate, rubber doesn’t exist on Sky Island where Engel lives. He has no clue that there is a magic substance that is immune to electricity and that Luffy has a devil fruit for it.

This actually made me really happy as it flipped the whole, at the time, idea of logi devil fruits being the strongest.

The Usopp one is just incredible cause it really says “this is undeniable proof that this man is depressed, and he will still get up, go to work, and kick your fucking ass when he needs to.” Just a great characterization, especially because we still see him struggle with all the same issues afterwards.
