Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

A funny kind of inversion of this is the Attack on Titan live-action movie. The manga's author Hajime Isayama himself suggested making several changes to the film so that it would be distinct from the manga & anime.

It could probably work if they just focused on other scouts during the collapse of the wall or they could’ve made it like a survival horror movie with citizens trying to flee to the interior while dodging titans. Kinda like Quite Place or something

Live action adaptations have so much potential for this kind of stuff but people just seem to think “what if we turned this product lifeless instead”

It's always funny seeing ads for anime adaptations. Especially when Japan does it themselves, the sets are bland as hell, they get the cheapest wigs for characters that are meant to be blonde, or they don't bother at all and all the ladies that had distinct hairstyles in the cartoon all have the same lady from the Ring hairstyle.

I don't get why people keep trying to make live action versions of things that obviously can't be replicated. The feats in AoT are so unrealistic and unless they have a massive budget to make titans, it's never gonna work. Yet they keep trying.

Claymation would be awesome

Avatar the last Airbender ugh

I still think if Netflix wanted to make a live action Avatar then they should have just created an original show based on one of the lesser known avatars from the past. It would have probably gone a lot better since OG fans want new avatar content and it wouldn't be insulting to the original show.

There's two different Tokyo Ghoul live action movies. Rize didn't even have purple hair. I wonder how they'd do this:

IMO, only exception is live-action Rurouni Kenshin, Liar Game, and maybe Death Note (Japanese one, not the crappy Netflix adapation).

Live-action for Liar Game (2007) will always be best for me.

They’re just coming out with the anime in 2026 and a couple episodes in I’m like “this literally has nothing on the live action.”

People? I'm sorry but suit and ties are NOT people, they're in it for the bag not the art

French movie Immortal: Ad Vitam is also an inversion: it was directed by Enki Bilal who created original Nikopol comics, and he made many changes like moving the setting from 2023 post-apocalyptic fascist Paris to 2090s New York ruled by a genetics mega corp and many more.

I weirdly enjoyed this confusing movie

u/FelixEylie Aug 21 '26

I thought comics will be less confusing, but they're even more. Still enjoyable though.

good movie?

It has cool visuals but you're better off reading the nikopol trilogy instead

Just my personal opinion: mediocre movie, amazing visual masterpiece. Also, Linda Hardy is hot AF. I enjoyed it immensely.

Hey I remember seeing this as a kid with my dad at the movies, good times

Also it follows a similar idea to the original prototype with the story taking place in the future of our world and the Titans being a weapon.

given how the source material ended, you can tell why he insisted on these changes. He was intent on hiding how his story would end.

u/therealmonkyking Aug 21 '26

What's even wilder is that the second part is a loose adaptation of material that even the manga hadn't gotten to yet

23

u/Willing-File-3638 Aug 21 '26

That's why I never heard of the film

3

u/syd_goes_roar Aug 21 '26

It's _really_ bad and not in the fun way

9

u/WorkerPrestigious960 Aug 21 '26

There’s a live action???

3

u/MoonoftheStar Aug 21 '26

Completely forgot this was a thing

5

u/alphagusta Aug 21 '26

Why does it look like a badly photoshopped Cosplay Convention shoot?

2

u/StinkyBeanGuy Aug 21 '26

Imagine if they filmed it in Nördlingen, would have been peak

2

u/Hellknightx Aug 21 '26

The creators of Avatar the Last Airbender actually got booted off of the live action Netflix adaptation because of all the changes they wanted to make. They even wanted to turn Iroh into a surprise twist villain.

2

u/reggienaldsimons Aug 21 '26

maybe he clocked that this shit just never works and tricked them into distancing it from the original

1

u/CreamPuzzleheaded300 Aug 21 '26

Wasnt it changed to be a post apocalypse og the modern world and they changed the titan rockets that show up later in the manga as god damn Stingers?

1

u/FatReinerAss2024 Aug 21 '26

It was pretty much an adaptation to the prototype that he submitted to Shonen Jump.

1

u/Use_the_Falchion Aug 21 '26

I…I had erased this film from my memory. Thanks for bringing it back…

u/Ok_Effort_1937 Aug 21 '26

1

u/BR41ND34D Aug 21 '26

I was this days old when I learned there's a live action movie for this franchise

That's how they supposedly ruined the first FMA anime. They changed the logical story, supposedly at the manga author's suggestion so as not to "spoil" the ongoing manga with... alchemy is powered by jews being burned by the nazis on our own Earth. Also Hohenheim leaves the Elric household to... be... with... his... genocidal... centuries-old lover. Also Edward successfully resurrected his mother through alchemy and his and his brother's sacrifices, and basically left her to rot because he thought it was a monster instead. That fucking show was an abomination.
