Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

The DMC show made me laugh because Reuben would've definitely come back to do Dante's voice, he loves the character. Johnny also loves Nero, so instead of doing that, they screwed both characters by having Johnny voice Dante and Reuben never even coming back. On top of that, didn't even ask Dan to come back to do Vergil's voice.

Like huh???

JYB is basically a "take anything that comes my way" actor and voice actor these days, has been for a long time, it's why he's in just about everything. He probably wasn't at all precious about voicing Dante.

He was very minimally involved in Castlevania. I think the season he worked the most on was 3. And it shows.

I thought most everyone loved at least the first couple seasons of Castlevania (I know I did) but now it seems to get lumped in with Adi’s other garbage. Am I misremembering? It seemed like everyone was talking about Castlevania being great at one point?

I love Castlevania. Seasons 1,2, and 4 are phenomenal. 3 is...lacking because Shankar started getting more involved. Which sucks because I like St. Germain.

Whoever made that sex scene with the 2 asians needs to never have a job again.

Oh my fucking god that betrayal was so pointless, I actually liked those characters too

Seasons 1 and 2 were a genuinely interesting and decently accurate take on the games, specially considering how little narrative the original NES game had, after that I kinda lost interest, cant say it was bad as I haven't sat down to watch it but the more it goes the less of the games there is, kinda becoming some other story with the Castlevania names put into it.

And then when the actual creatives went to make something without him (Nocturne), he sued to force them to add his name to the credits despite doing absolutely nothing for that show.

Counterpoint: Dredd.

Literally the only thing he did on Dredd was get them some bank loans.

He had no creative input anywhere in the production.

Meh, despite what the Reddit hive mind tells me to think I really enjoyed Castlevania and DMC

He had basically nothing to do with Castlevania, and sued them to add his name to Nocturne which he literally had nothing to do with.

interesting how when you agree with someone it's common sense, when you don't they're a part of a hivemind

The shows themselves are not awful, but being adaptations really hurts them because they are not at all like the original product. I do think as original IP would have had much better reception

Meh, never played either of the games so I'm not looking at it from a purist standpoint

I'm looking at it from the position of "is this an entertaining TV show, how well is it written, does the plot track, etc."

Ya 100%. I feel like almost all of the video game adaptations (aside from edgerunners) that I've enjoyed in the last 10 years have had his name attached to them. I'm always super confused when I see people hating him

Because the Hive Mind says he's bad because he didn't do a 1:1 adaptation of Devil May Cry

That's literally it
