Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

Alternatively comic book writer Mark Millar has voiced being chill with Hollywood adapting his work however they want, as his original work still exists.

I prefer the Kingsman movie over the comic so I can respect that

u/Hedrickao Aug 21 '26

I love the part where he’s like “It’s time to [title card]!”

7

u/garbagetruc Aug 21 '26

And then he [title card]-ed all over those guys!

u/Hedrickao Aug 21 '26

If you think you can Kick my Ass, don’t forget that I’m [Title Card]

It’s the paradox of Millar being an edge lord hotshot that he doesn’t feel like a bad adaptation can taint his work so he doesn’t get involved with them, resulting in the adaptations being free to improve on his work.

The problem was never that we were too dumb to get that Nemesis is supposed to be a bad guy. The problem is that many of his stories were deliberately made to be as edgy as possible, with rampant violence and sexual assault alongside plot points that are just there to be shocking without actually contributing anything to the plot (like comic Big Daddy actually just being a psycho whose wife left him, so he decided to turn his daughter into a killer and sic her on some random mob boss for fun).

He also early on responded to the question “How is the Ultimate Marvel universe different from the main universe?” And his response was “It’s just better.” Which is a very early ‘90s Todd McFarlane/Rob Liefeld answer but given in the early 2000s with no original characters to back it up. Millar’s writing that wasn’t shock value and edgy was just dumb. Nick Fury fan casting a movie about The Ultimates and Professor X fanboying about the Hellfire Club while they’re stage-whispering four feet away about killing him were particular egregious.

I would argue that might have been for the best with this one

For the most part i agree, but as much as I love the film, the reveal of Big Daddy’s true background in the comics is so damn good.

Only ever seen the movie, took a look at the ol' TvTropes page. Holy crap. What a mindblower that must have been

Can I just get a quick spoiler here for it?

33

u/CTKM72 Aug 21 '26

lol idk why the other guy had to be a dick about it but obviously spoilers for kick ass …… In the comic you think Big Daddy has a classic superhero origin story for most of it but later you learn that he was actually just some crazy guy who abandoned his wife, kidnapped Mindy to train her and chose a random crime family to be his arch nemesis.

16

u/Semi-Passable-Hyena Aug 21 '26

So...... He's just crazy. Which sure, yeah, that tracks. Thank you.

u/eirebrit Aug 21 '26

He was a comic book nerd too. He funded everything by selling his comics.

u/InfiniteKincaid Aug 21 '26

Wtf.

Who's a dick?

Reddit user “FuckYourRights”. To nobody’s surprise.

u/CTKM72 Aug 22 '26

Like u/basteis said I wasn’t referring to you.

1

u/InfiniteKincaid Aug 22 '26

Also the 2008 movie Wanted with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie (although that was Millar and JG Jones)

I don't care what anyone says, I love this movie.

8

u/Forsaken_Ad203 Aug 21 '26

I dont love this movie, but my god it is better in almost every possible than the comics

1

u/Deuce_GM Aug 21 '26

Wow, it was that bad?

7

u/Forsaken_Ad203 Aug 21 '26

Every single character is a parody of dc villains but made more vile and pathetic, with many comments on doing horrid sexual crimes to celebs and being above the law in those and every other regard

2

u/P1zzaBag3ls Aug 21 '26

Edgelord garbage. 🤷🏽

6

u/Petyr_Baelishh Aug 21 '26

Mark miller likes money. Dont take his word for any adaptions because he truly doesn’t give a fuck as long as the check clears. See: Jupiter’s Legacy

1

u/SortIntrepid9192 Aug 21 '26

I CREATE LIFE!!! Andidestroyit

1

u/Oberon_Swanson Aug 21 '26

That's Jupiter Ascending, a different dumb thing

19

u/Fluffy-Ad7165 Aug 21 '26

Tbh I think the movies are superior compared to the source material lol gimme kick ass 3 bastards

1

u/Olobnion Aug 21 '26

The Jupiter's Legacy show was terrible compared to the comic, though.

2

u/dude123nice Aug 21 '26

He may have written Kick-Ass, but at least he's not a kiss-ass.

2

u/the_monkeyspinach Aug 21 '26

Man, I love Kick-Ass, but I fucking hate Kick-Ass 2.

2

u/revbleech Aug 21 '26

He's Mark Millar. The best thing to do with his dogshit is to change everything humanly possible.

1

u/Ulrik_Decado Aug 21 '26

Toho movie is few levels above the comics, so Im OK with it :)

1

u/M4xP0w3r_ Aug 21 '26

An adaptation can and often needs to be different because of the different media, but to completely disregard the source material is also just stupid. If someone just wants to purposely not look at the source material they shouldnt make an adaptation.

1

u/Dan-D-Lyon Aug 21 '26

The subtext: "I'm pretty sure I make more money when they make my ideas less insane before filming them"

1

u/beary_neutral Aug 21 '26

That's because Millar is a shit comic writer and his comics are just largely concept pitches for adaptations.
